But, then I hear other bands and, unless they are obviously not really good, then I feel like we just got totally womped on. But I guess it's harder to tell from a field level. I was surprised by the results at area. I was hoping you guys would make it. You were there because you earned it and you have a pretty dang good band in the making. Your band was really good too. Well, there's alway 2011(For me atleast) and we can only get better Quote

tubastillid.i Posted October 25, 2009 Posted October 25, 2009 i agree that this is one of the toughest areas ever ... hendrickson , dripping springs , lbj , and hays moving on to state even though i was really hoping to see vandergraft move on with us because being in the waiting spot to march on and listening to all the young players (freshman and sophmores only in case you dont know ) leave it all out there was amazing but to all the vandergraft members like i told some of yall (since we were sitting next to yall ) yall did amazing and you have nothing to be disappointed in !! i hope that al area d makes state finals again this year ... GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE !! Quote

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE !! Speaking of LBJ. That was another shocker. I don't think hardly anyone expected them to rise up. I was rather excited to see another underdog make a stand. It has been a great year! I believe state is going to be extremely tough and there's a long week ahead of all the advancing bands. All of the band that didn't advance can get some R&R and prep for next year. Should be amazing Quote

titancoaster Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 The scores in finals are really interesting a tie between Hendrickson and Dripping Spring, and one point between Hays and LBJ it should be interesting to see how the pairs duke it out at state. Quote

We are a 1st year band, and making it this far was just....amazing, to say the least. We still have Duncanville to go to, but then our season's done. Next year's BOA. And Spicer's not disappointed. We did the best that we could. It just wasn't good enough. But with 56 students, we beat 15 other bands 4-5 times our size... I must say I was reluctant at first when I saw a band your size get on the stage... but when yall started playing, my mouth dropped. Amazing balanced sounds, and probably the best tuba tone I heard all evening. You all were great, I was astonished. I had to look down at the program to realize that your band director was the one and only Jeremy Spicer. You are in good hands, and I can't wait to see you all when you have become the best 4A band in the state. In my opinion you were cleaner than hays... but I guess the judges didn't think so. Best of luck to your band at your last competition. Quote

As far as I've been told, we won because they had a lower placement than us (6th in music was their lowest ranking, and ours was 5th in music). EDIT: Lol, or not. Me and my mate both were expecting them in at least 2nd place, right after Dripping Springs. They're not that much of an underdog, they've been making area finals for quite some time now I believe... and I congratulate them on their State qualification, they desserve it. Quote
longhornsax Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 I'm a little surprised by these scores. I know comparing contest scores is looked down upon, but Dripping Springs was way ahead of these other bands at Westlake. I was really thinking Dripping Springs would run away with this area and make a lot of noise at state. I'm not saying that they can't still do that, but I think it makes the rest of this area look really strong if they could keep up with what I saw with Dripping Springs. Also, I think we can all see that Vandegrift is gonna be a force to be reckoned with in the near future. Early success seems to be a theme with LISD schools. Quote

I didn't call them underdogs because of their history.. But, from what I looked at, I didn't see or hear a single person say they would be in the top 5 this go around. I heard alot of Steele, Hays, Dripping, Vandergrift, and Hendrickson. But, everyone worked really hard and that's all that matters Quote

Basefiveftw Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 We at Dripping Springs have been working our butts off too, ya'know. Like everyone else, we've been having our flu issues and weather issues (in my four years this has been the worst with both). We do think our scores are a bit strange, though. In marching we were ranked first and second, and in music we were first, third and sixth, oddly. One of the judges didn't even think we were worthy of top 4. I haven't listened to the tape or read the comments, but we were obviously doing something that he didn't like. I would blame it on going third, but that's a weak argument, and wouldn't explain why the other judges had us ranked so highly. Anyway, I wanted to congratulate all the bands on a great job. Especially Vandergrift, you guys are awesome. I wish they had stuck you in the top 4. Anyway, good luck Area D! Quote

There always seems to be that judge or two who is looking for something very different from the others. I thought all the finalists were very strong. As each one finished I would think - wow, they were good, too. But I think the judges probably got it right in the end. Hendrickson was really on in finals and I'm a little surprised by the one 5th place in music; I don't get the sixth place rank from one judge for Dripping Springs, they looked as good as ever; LBJ's music was beautifully done, a very nice show, as well as Hays. Congrats to all the bands and especially to those going on to State. It was a great night of bands. Edited October 26, 2009 by Mad.Hatter Quote
titancoaster Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 ^In my opinion when it comes to Area all that matters is advancing, not who advanced in first place or fourth, becuase it could all change later at State. As long as the judges picked the right ones to advance thats all that matters. (See Area D '05 and '07 as Hendrickson and Connally switched ranks from area to state in both of those years) Quote
Mad.Hatter Posted October 26, 2009 Author Posted October 26, 2009 Also, I still love Lake Travis' show and was hoping they would get through. Vandergrift was impressive for their first year of competition. I also enjoyed watching their director on the side as much as watching the band on the field; he was non-stop pacing and very into it. Steele had a nice full sound and I loved the stars in the hats in place of the plumes, nice touch. McCallum also sounded very good. Really, all the bands in finals were good; it was a tough one to judge. Quote
