takigan Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 I feel like we as the staff all too often make the mistake of assuming all of our readers know the rules, purpose and format of every new contest we review and post results for. For every long-time, well educated member of the site there's always a new fresh-faced freshman coming through here that doesn't know anything about anything, and we should always be keeping them in mind when we write. Here's a quick rundown of the TMEA Honor Band contest for those unfamiliar: Each year TMEA picks a single "Honor Band" or Wind Ensemble group in each size classification in the state to perform a concert at the upcoming TMEA convention in San Antonio. They make this decision through a series of Region and Area contests, just like All-State or UIL. Texas bands are divided into 28 Regions, all encompassed by an umbrella of 7 greater Areas (A,B,C,D,E,F,G). TMEA groups the Regions into areas a little differently than UIL does, so don't be surprised to see X school in your area that you didn't compete against at Area marching contest. The Junior High contests work a little differently, but for High Schools the Honor Band contest works just like Marching band in that schools can only try for State every other year (Honor Band is held on the opposing year to that school's Marching state year). Schools get a certain number of attempts during the spring to record 1 concert tape to submit to judges in their Region to be judged against other bands (the tape usually contains the same music performed at UIL Concert&Sightreading). After all schools in the region have submitted their best tape, the region committee meets during the summer and listens to the tapes and submits the top 2 schools to advance to their Area committee. The same process happens again at Area, with the Area committee sending the best 2 tapes to be judged at the State level. A theoretical maximum of 14 tapes in each classification will be judged at State (2 from each of the 7 areas). The State tape hearing occurs at the Texas Bandmaster's Convention in San Antonio in late July. There, they name the 'Honor Band' in each category after listening to all the tapes in addition to formally recognizing the Top 7. The named bands are invited to perform a concert at TMEA the following February. Quote
Xenon Posted June 15, 2010 Author Posted June 15, 2010 Thanks, Brandon! You are absolutely right that all too often we tend to gloss over too many details in what tends to be a constantly circulating and changing population of readers. I had written an article about the whole TMEA Honor Band process, but that was lost in the TxBPress wipeout. That is a great rundown you put together and will certainly help people understand! One additional important oddity about this process, though, is that a band that is chosen as the State-level Honor Band is not allowed to compete in the next competition 2-years later. In 5A, this means that Duncanville isn't allowed to compete this time. Quote
Montoya Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 According to The Yellow Board: Area F Clear Lake Brazoswood Kingwood Morton Ranch Dobie Katy Taylor Top two advance to state, right? Quote
takigan Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 My Predictions A - Marcus & Hebron B - Haltom & Martin C - [Extremely tough to call] Rowlett & Berkner D - Coppell & Cedar Park E - [Also tough to call] Reagan & Jersey Village F - Clear Lake & Brazoswood (that would have been my prediction anyway) G - Clements & Dulles (though a part of me really wants to put Harlingen) Quote
buzz Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Out of Area E, I think it'll be Anderson and Jersey Village... Anderson because Strange Humors has a huge English Horn solo and the English Horn player at Anderson 1) made state and 2) is a great musician. Jersey Village because their program is really strong and very difficult! Just my two cents. Quote

(Note that I have not heard any of these submissions except for Coppell and DeSoto.) (alphabetical) A - Hebron & Marcus B - Haltom & Martin C - Plano East & Rowlett (Four years ago Plano East was 2nd place at State. I heard their tape two years ago and it just felt like a bad recording. But you are absolutely right, a REALLY tough call) D - Coppell & Spring (I have heard rumors that Spring has been really strong this year) E - Jersey Village & Westlake (I've heard that Reagan has been having a strong year, but I really liked the recordings from these two bands the last few years) F - Brazoswood & Clear Lake (that too would have been my prediction anyways) G - Clements & Lopez (I really wanted to have Dulles in here, but I went with history) Quote
Xenon Posted June 21, 2010 Author Posted June 21, 2010 Updated the schedule to show Area A's location being changed from Marcus HS to Lamar MS in Flower Mound. Quote
sax5warrior Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Sorry if it seems awkward posting after a 10 month hiatus. I don't think DeSoto is no longer eligible for the state honor band process with their head director change. Quote

I also just confirmed that the TMEA site is finally showing South Grand Prairie as advancing as the alternate. Quote

Lopez getting the top spot. I will check with my source asap. Quote
