Xenon Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Here is the awesome 2010 Grand Nationals montage that they played during the Grand Finale. http://link.brightcove.com/services/player...id=675335008001 Quote

That means that Churchill and Lafayette (LA) did, in fact, score in the lower 8 overall. Correct me if I'm wrong. Nope Churchill was 24th after prelims so that would mean they were the 2nd band that made the "Next " the semi's spot are all drawn for. Quote

That's largely due in part to the loss of Mike Sloan (visual/guard director) to Richland. 2008 they had him, and they were the usual suspects for BOA San Antonio finals. 2009 was their first year to not have him, and their scores dipped way down. And then this year, it such continues. It's depressing, because we all know deep down that those Churchill kids have the talent level of a finalist band as we've seen in years past. Quote

They also lost their head director in '08, I believe. I'm friends with who was the head drum major in 2009, and back at Area D in 2008 I remember talking to him about it and it was obvious simply by the placement of the band at state (8th) that they were beginning to decline, because they were usually a 3rd-5th place finisher. Thinking again about it, they might just be in a decline as far as maturity. This year with my band, we worked 100 times harder than in years past and had excellent direction, but we were marching only about 30 seniors (4 of which are drum majors) in a 5A competitive program so there wasn't as much experience on the field as needed. Churchill could possibly be experiencing the same situation. Good talent takes time to mature. Quote

I can see that being the case for Reagan because we all know how good they were before '08 and they barely got into finals at Area that year. This was likely because of their loss of a director and split with another school as well, so I could see maturity having been an issue since they have been getting better since then, but Churchill has had 3 years of this, so I don't think it's maturity because they're as big as ever.
