bchorn Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) So I haven't been to Super Regional BoA yet. How do they handle the judging of 80+ bands? Is it similar to Grand Nationals where the bands are dwindled down to a semi-finals and then a finals?Or is there just a finals and that's it. Edited May 16, 2011 by bchorn Quote

Super Regionals only allow 50 bands (may be 55 but I'm not certain) to sign up and attend. The number of finalists depends on the number signed up (either 12 if below x amount of bands and 14 if equal/above x amount of bands; I think x is 45, but someone else probably knows what it is). Very interesting that you mentioned the number of bands attending the super regional determines finals. Here's the count so far for the number of bands signed up to attend super regionals. Indiana: 28 Atlanta: 33 St Louis: 44 San Antonio: 55 That's a lot of marching bands! Quote
Danpod Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 We have confirmation from one of our BOA friends that Clear Brook, James Bowie, and Winston Churchill are all signed up for the Atlanta Regional. If they all decide to go, all three have the chance to really shake up the Georgia Dome. The San Antonio Super Regional lineup is just filthy. The amount of legit finalists should be illegal. Mix in an upcoming California program and a defending Colorado State Champion and you've got a pretty intense two days. Quote

I never stopped to count the number of legit finalists...that's insane. I have no doubt we'll see a great band get boxed out of finals because they had a slighltly off run. All in all, the Texas BOA events are looking quite stacked this year! Edited May 17, 2011 by Mellophone77 Quote

By my count there are 17 bands from the 2010 5A state competition (including 8 of the 10 finalists) as well as nine 2010 Area finalists as well. That's not including the 4A bands that will be in the mix for state this year as well. That is going to be one rock solid competition! Quote
takigan Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 What a great year for Texas! We're spread all over the map, from California to Georgia! There will be Texas bands attending 7 Regionals across the country this year plus Grand Nationals! I don't have the time to go and check my sources but I think this is the first time we've had Texas bands attending 3 of the 4 Super-Regionals plus Grand Nationals all in the same year! In addition to the 3 Texas Regionals, the Grand National attendees (CTJ, The Woodlands, Pflugerville, Spring and Hebron) and the Atlanta attendees (Winston Churchill, James Bowie and Clear Brook), also of note is Birdville, who hopes to continue their Finalist success at the St. Louis Super Regional in Missouri. In addition, 2 El Paso schools will be going out of state: Bel Air will be traveling to the St. George Regional in Utah while Americas HS will be attending the regional in Hemet, California. Good luck to all of these bands! Quote
Statebound Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 This is my first chance to look at the fall schedule and a few things caught my eye. First, it's good to see bands going in different directions this year to mix things up and compete against different programs. It makes for a better measuring stick than seeing the same bands every week. Second, I'm happy to see Coppell going to BOA SA this year after not going the last couple years--they are a strong program and were missed. Third, I had to do a double take when I saw Hebron going to Grand Nat's. That seems like a big step for them. They are doing it in a year where Marcus and Bell do not appear to be going so perhaps their timing is good. To their credit, they had a very strong program last year. I'm already starting to look forward to the fall! Quote
dstbone Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I think Dripping Springs might be attending The San Antonio Super Regional but I am not sure because we got a fall Schedule in the mail that says we are attending the BOA San Antonio Regional on Nov. 5. I'm not sure what this means because we aren't on the schedule for it. Also there isn't a Regional on the BOA website scheduled just a Super Regional. Again this is just speculation on my part, because according to the calendar sent by the directors we are going. On another note about the Super Regional, it is going to be really intense this year with all the great bands attending it. Quote

Bandlover Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 I think the Dripping Springs directors are considering the BOA competition but are not ready to commit just yet; they went ahead and put on the schedule just in case. Quote
Mellophone77 Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 This was posted a while ago on the BOA forums, but may as well make it known here. Winston Churchill dropped out of the Atlanta lineup Not too surprising. Can't imagine it'd be cheap to make it out there... Quote
newwave Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 (edited) takigan said: Wow....what a terrifying lineup! It's like having BOA San Antonio a few weeks early. Granted I think we could see a couple of the heavy hitters drop out before contest (Bell is signed up for both Arlington and Conroe....I highly doubt they'll attend both). Locks: Bell Marcus The Woodlands S.F. Austin Cedar Park C.T. Johnson Vandegrift (what was once a loose cannon I think will now be a laser-guided nuke) Bubble: Pflugerville Winston Churchill Ronald Reagan McNeil Cypress Falls Brazoswood Friendswood Legacy Lafayette Clear Brook I'd also be wary of both Cedar Ridge and Westwood. Cedar Ridge made finals at SHSU last year with what I believe was just 9th and 10th graders...Last year was their first year and they will be adding 11th grade this year so we should expect a stronger showing from them. McNeil and Pflugerville have been around for awhile and have good programs, but were both general unknowns before making a name for themselves in BOA Regionals these past couple years. Westwood is also a new, old face coming from a similar background from the same neck of the woods, so it's quite possible we could see something amazing come out of them as well. I think you can put Friendswood for sure into a lock trust me lol.O and clear brook, brazoswood, and wiston churchill Edited July 5, 2011 by newwave Quote

In all likelihood, Brazoswood, Friendswood, and WC will probably make finals, but stranger things have happened. There are tons of bands fighting for those bottom spots and I don't think any of us can say NOW, without knowing anything about this season's bands, that those other programs won't beat out Friendswood, a band that missed finals last year. Don't be offended; just prove us wrong Quote

And newwave, I don't care if you use proper grammar down to the last comma, but please read over what you write before you post so it at least makes sense. That's all i ask for... Quote

Austin is a real hotbed for local contests and a lot of programs are content with only scheduling those types of shows. I hope more Austin programs use these shows as tune-up performances for the showdown in San Antonio in November. ......Yes, I am still alive. Quote
