Boswell - Beat out Argyle in finals and Aledo in HEB prelims. Frisco Centennial - Beat Hebron, Sachse, Haltom and Rowlett. Vandegrift - Beat Cedar Park, Reagan, Round Rock, Westlake, and Lake Travis. Yes UIL is judged differently, but those are some pretty BIG victories. Maybe this is the 4A state year of the underdog??? Wouldn't that be amazing for those kids. =] Edited October 16, 2011 by borchnork Quote
musicmogul33 Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 Aledo jumped up in Finals at HEB to 5th, topping Boswell, Argyle, and becoming best in class 4A. Quote

While that's fantastic for Aledo (who has always had crazy intense shows), I do think that Boswells original Prelims placement does put them as a group to keep a careful watch over. Quote
Bandlover Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Im not ruling out Poteet, they can still come in and knock everyone out. Cedar Park, Vandigrift and Dripping Springs are equally matched as far as I am concerned, it may end up being a coin toss Quote
Drummantx Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Frisco Centennial, pretty good. Pretty good. Quote

They will have hard compettition in Area C, and it will be close as to whether they make it to state this year. I have followed them for years, so I sure hope they do. Quote

I always consider McKinney to be a competitor, but never as strong as they have been this year. I'm EXTREMELY impressed with how they're doing this year. Quote
Bandlover Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Saw many of the bands at the region 18 contest last night at burger center. After seeing Dripping Springs show, it wouldnt surprise me to see thiem take state a second time.. Quote

FoobYen Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 http://www.uilforms.com/marchrptuilpublic.asp Look under Region 18 for yesterday's results. Quote

My personal favorite shows for 4A that I've seen are definitely Mansfield Timberview and Newman Smith. I have always loved Hendrickson and Dripping Springs. I would love to see them take the top spot. I will throw this thought out there: Frisco Centennial Placed 2nd at their competition this weekend, beating out power house 5A Bands Hebron, Sachse, Haltom AND Rowlett. They placed 2nd overall in music, falling behind the 5A honor band, Hebron. I think they may be a force to be reckoned with this season for sure. Good to hear. We're pretty confident about music this year, but marching is another story for some sets. Also our 2nd bass drum broke his hand, one of our snares failed a class, and another shattered his elbow, so our drumline is severely crippled... Quote
borchnork Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 That must be really harsh. A strong drumline is crucial for a steady beat in my opinion. I'm sure you guys can work it out though. Quote
Natalie Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Friendswood is looking pretty good. Edited October 24, 2011 by Natalie Quote
Xenon Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Natalie said: I would like to see friendswood win. Two years ago, when they got second it was because of the substitute judge who was in favor of dripping springs and gave friendswood a 3 while the other judges gave them a 1. That's what stopped them from being first. Friendswood is definitely coming back this year to kick butt, at the Lonestar marching competition they came in fourth beating brazoswood, Woodlands college park, other bands, and they even had at least five people not able to compete. Their show is coming along really good this year, and they have the necessary qualities and passion to win it. That is just straight up not true. The rankings for Dripping Springs and Friendswood from 2009 4A State Finals were: 1 Dripping Springs HS: Music = 2 1 2 Marching = 1 2 Total = 8 2 Friendswood HS: Music = 1 4 1 Marching = 2 3 Total = 11 Even if Music Judge #2 would have had Friendswood as 2nd instead of 4th, Friendswood still would have been 2nd to Dripping Springs. Quote
Thomas Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 (edited) Actually, Friendswood got a 4th place from the substitute judge, not a 3rd place, and every other music judge that day (5 total) gave them first place. Anyway, receiving 2nd place three times in the past five state marching contests, Friendswood is the epitome of bad luck (and sometimes bad judging). But as everyone knows, no one remembers second place. Edited October 23, 2011 by Thomas Quote

Actually they would have won in that case with a total of 8 to DS's 9 (due to getting pushed to 2nd from that judge). But 1,2,1 would have been a completely reasonable set of Music votes. Especially when DS was 2,1,2 in Music. And no matter what that music judge placed Friendswood, they could have won if they'd have received even just one 1st place vote from either of the Marching judges. (2x 1st's in Music and 1x 1st in Marching = Champion regardless of total) When it is all put together, it wasn't Music that decided the contest, it was Marching. Quote

When 5 music judges give you first over the course of prelims and finals, and one judge gives you fourth, you have to wonder what the judge was smoking to be different from FIVE other judges. Quote
