Back on topic, I really like Cedar Park's style of loud playing, and Mahler is one of my favorite composers. I know everyone is rooting against the favorite, but it is hard not to like CP's shows.

Hi everyone. I am new to txbands, but I wanted to create an account to say that "Thomas" does not represent Friendswood in any way. Also, no one I have talked to has any idea who he is. Sorry for any trouble he (or she?) has caused. Although we were disappointed after our second place finish at state two years ago, no one is bitter, on the contrary, we are all very excited for this year! Good luck to everyone at area this weekend!

Give your Piccolo trumpet soloist a high five for me.

Reagan's a boss.

Our percussion director told us that we just needed to go around shaking all our woodwinds hands as well for their crazy parts in the opener and closer. XD

Dripping Springs began taking heat the minute it was announced they had won state in 2009. Blogs about poor sportsmanship, rigged judging, over excited players, on and on. I hate seeing that after 2 years people are still trying to prove that DS did not deserve to win. The directors at Dripping Springs teach the students that the reward is knowing that you played your best and your best was better than your last performance. you cannot predict the judging, you cannot predict a winner based on past performances. The band that goes into finals and performs their best show all year will have a chance to take a medal, the judges will decide which bands best is best enough to win. The honor is knowing that you played your best and made it to state...

Honor band is not necessarily indicative of how a band plays WHILE marching. Look at 5A for the easiest example. Marcus hasn't won honor band yet, (though they came close in 2009,) but they seem to get the music caption everywhere they go.

If a band is capable of contending for Honor Band, it shows musically they are capable of winning a state marching title. By UIL Standards 60% is music and 40% marching.

And if a band has an excellence in music, I'm sure their directors push them to be excellent in marching.

Slightly off topic but this makes me curious as to how the Frisco ISD Schools would have done in 4A honor band this last cycle. Frisco ISD banned bands from submitting Honor Band and Midwest tapes starting last year, but musically you look at scores so far this season and Centennial placed 2nd in music to the 5A Honor Band, Hebron, and I believe that same competition, Wakeland came in 6th place overall in music.

I am now firmly under the belief that the top 3 from Area B will make state finals. Not quite sure if any will actually medal, but they'll put up a fight.

What??? Why??

The only reason that I can think of is that they aren't willing to let the concert bands travel anywhere....

Unfortunately, this doesn't always hold true. And certainly doesn't always work in the reverse direction (which theoretically, it should)...

Even though LD Bell wins the music caption at marching contests (even BOA GN Finals!) quite often, they haven't even made it out of the Region round (a strong region) of Honor Band in a long time.

Band parents with seniors in the top ensembles complained that it wasn't fair to make their child record for a competition they wouldn't perform at if the bands were selected.... =/

At least 5 bands that advance from area B should make finals...that's how good this area is. And the early afternoon block at Area B (Wakeland, Centennial, Aledo, Sherman, and others) is a bunch of bands that will probably all advance...

This is entirely possible. Three of the four bands that made it two years ago from Area B made finals and Southwest missed it by two. I'll almost be surprised if there aren't three Area B bands in finals with one earning a medal.

This is simply not true. Liberty HS placed 3rd in Honor Band this past July. They beat out Frisco and Wakeland at Region/Area in order to do so.

Ummm actually...

L.D. Bell has not submitted Honor Band tapes in nearly two decades. Last year was the first year they have done it in a VERY VERY long time. I would figure that a bands first year may not be the strongest considering the length of time between submissions. (Though they sounded fantastic!)

They weren't supposed to record at least.... Centennial scrapped their whole recording sessions because of this. They had worked hard on the Maslanka Symphony and I want to say their other piece was Hammersmith for the recordings... =/

On topic:

I think the band from Area B most likely to medal is Newman Smith. It's such a clean show and musically it's quite fantastic this year.

Centennial could not submit because Tim Linley left to take the head position at Richardson High School. No ensemble can submit for Honor Band if the conductor submitting the recording will not be the same person conducting at the concert in February.

How do you think friendswood will do this year at state?

I see a finals placement... But idk how high. After seeing the six bands from Area B last night, i think state I'd going to be FAR closer than anybody could even imagine.

well still should be a good contest but its official now that poteet is disqualified today, there appeal was denied. IMO from what i hear is a stupid reason but rules are rules.

If someone who knows the truth or not can confirm this but from what i hear a student that was not part of the band but was just inchrge af helping set up there sound board or something failed before regionals and was not eligible to participate. but somehow show up on there offiicall roster to the uil board and was disqualified.

If thats true like i saw rules are rules. but seriously someone that helps out the set up is causing them not to go. Im not saying they would have won but its Poteet for goodness sake.

The worst part was UIL let them preform at Area make most believe they will be allowed to move on but then told teusday they will not be allowed to move on to State .
