Bandlover Posted September 29, 2011 Posted September 29, 2011 I have noticed how every football game I have attended this year, the crowds during half time performances have been very loud and don't seem to be paying attention to the bands; even the home crowds seem to be ignoring their bands. I was wondering how this effects the bands on the fields. It frustrates me when I am trying to enjoy the performance. How do you feel and does it effect your band.... Quote
TxRaider13 Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 (edited) I have had positive experience and negative experiences with crowds. Our little 2A school is only in its 3rd year and we have had mixed crowds so far. Our home crowd seems to enjoy the show and half time but when we play on the road, we have had really bad names yelled at the students and staff. When I attended Mesquite Poteet, for the most part both home and away crowds were polite and respected the students as they performed. Only 3 schools gave the band problems and 1 which made the UIL and school districts stop playing each other for 10yrs for student safety. Not saying the school is a bad place or the people are bad, but the problem that happened in 1997 caused Poteet and Lancaster to not play each other. The other two schools are cross town rival and a life time rival. Those who go to Poteet know those schools. At Forney when I attended was just bad, it wasn't like the Forney band is now. Our own crowd would shout really bad things during our show that would echo on the film, but now I can say it has got much better. What we tell our students is to treat everyone how you want to be treated, be polite and applaud, and don't bad mouth or bash anyone. Most of the shouting and noise comes from the student section, but I have seen a few parents do it, but mainly the students of the school. My one advice to the students who read this forum is be respectful to those around you, most of the people attending a game or contest are their to enjoy the art the students are performing and if lucky enough watch a good football game while they wait for half time. I'm sure the people older than me that marched in the 90's or later have some good experiences with crowds that I would love to read about. Edited September 30, 2011 by TxRaider13 Quote

TxRaider13, you are a hypocrite. Don't tell people to be respectful when you yourself are not respectful to an opponent you beat. You are an example of bad sportsmanship. See below. Yeah back to crowd noise, when I was a freshman nobody really cared about our band but now, our home crowd really likes us and its great, they're actually quiet when we have a performance. Now away games are always a little different, some crowds are loud and curse us and others are really respectful... just goes to show you the towns that care and those who don't! Quote
boydbronco94 Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 I remember, vividly, a performance (last year) when our school was the visiting team at a football game versus Rowlett High School. I will NEVER forget some of the fans on the Rowlett home side as we marched onto the track for our performance at half time. They yelled obscenities at us, told us how bad we were and how great the Rowlett Band was in comparison to us, and they even spat on us. I hope and pray that no one else has had to go through that. It was the most disgusting and humiliating thing I have ever experienced in my life. Anyway, I have nothing against the Rowlett Band. If only their fans were as respectful as they were... Quote

I'm sorry that happened I have never been and hope to never see spitting by crowds or bands happen, I'll leave the school name out but when we played this school the crowd would throw money at us and yell cash beats trash Edited October 2, 2011 by TxRaider13 Quote
boydbronco94 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Oh, I digress. We were the HOME team for the aforementioned game. The way we were treated, you would think we were the visitors... I really hope this doesn't happen again. Quote

I'm not sure of your regionality, but I get to see the Northern Dallas bands almost every weekend and I've become impressed with how attentive the crowds and often the students are to the bands performance at halftime. I think part of it is that many of these bands have done well at the state level so they seem to get quite a bit of respect from the attendees. If you were to attend a Marcus football game, you would notice that almost everyone is back in their seat before the band plays. Also, I think it has to do with the enthusiasm of the specific band parent community. Anytime you're at an event with the Allen, Hebron, Plano East, Marcus (insert others here) bands, those parents are very organized, very vocal and make a lot of noise when their bands come onto the field and during performances. In fact, last football season I remember two football dads standing and talking in the stands at halftime and roughly 10 parents yelling at them to sit down and be quiet while the band was playing. I don't think I've ever seen those two standing and talking again. It's all about the expectations that the respective band communities set. Quote
Xenon Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 While marching around the track before a playoff football game at our home field (traditional entrance), the extremely highly ranked opposing team's crowd was throwing water bottles and yelling obscenities at us from the stands. This continued as we were setting up for the halftime show. Our team eventually won that game and went on to win the 5A Division-1 Football State Championship. And as a band, we ended up 3rd at 5A UIL State. Sometimes groups will be who they are and you have to go on and do your own thing anyways. Quote
Bandlover Posted October 3, 2011 Author Posted October 3, 2011 Each game is different; we had good crowds on both sides of the feild this last Friday, both sides were interested in their bands and very respective of the other, however, the Friday before, a kid in the student section had one of those high pitched air horns that he kept setting off during the performance; I wanted to climb in the stands and hold it in his ear until it ran out of air....... HHSBandMom225 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 I have noticed that there is noise at games during halftime. However, we band parents are adamant that people be quiet and will say so. The only real incident we've had so far this year -- and we haven't played our rivals yet(although we don't usually have any problems from them) -- is when we played against a football State champ. Someone in the crowd had one of those "horns" that you usually hear at baseball games. During our show, the quietest part, they sounded the horn. Also, we have "the" grim reaper in our show and when he left the field, the same crowd with the horn was SCREAMING at him...loud enough that we could hear them across the field. Unfortunately, those kind of things can't really be helped. What are we going to do? Run across and tell them to be quiet? lol It's why I enjoy the contests so much. For the most part, you've got band parents who all know how to be quiet and keep the kiddos quiet during the performances. It's SO nice! WAY back in the day when I was in band, we used to have the band officers go over and meet the band officers from the other band and then vice versa. When I was going with the officers to one of our rival's side, the mascot grabbed me! It was a huge Viking! lol Well, it scared me and freaked me out at the time, but it just makes me laugh now. BassBonesTX Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 (edited) The best advice I can offer is to not worry about the crowd until after the performance. If you stay focused in your show and have a great performance the crowd reaction should be great. As for football crowds don't worry about them (although I must admit spitting and obscenities are very unnecessary and can be very distracting). I have always been told to ignore them and treat it as a chance to get people interested. If you can take people who came to watch a football game and get them interested, then you have done a great job. Get them to applaud like crazy and you gain a lot of respect from them. Kankooku Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I Hate it when we play during half time they blow on their "horns" and cuss us out.. Especially during our halftime with the South Grand Prarie.... The crowed was soo mean... Quote

The visiting crowd would always ignore the fact a show was going on or leave when we came out, however sometimes if they liked the show, the ones paying attention would cheer or at least clap. The home crowd would mostly get quiet and watch the show, but even that wasn't the case all the time. It doesn't matter anymore now though, because CFB schools don't go to away games anymore. Quote

At our school we still do that with the band officers. It's a good tradition. Quote
