If I remember correctly, those bands that are closest to the competition go on Friday as they can go home easily and return to the stadium on time if they are called to Finals-such as the local San Antonio bands and also the sooner you turn in your money and paperwork stating that you want to compete the better your 'pick' of the day that you want. The 'first come-first served' principal.

Random pick.

CentexBandKid is right, it's just a random pick.

BOA (Super)Regional schedules are not just random picks. They are semi random with entry date and travel distance taken into account. The later that BOA receives your paperwork and payments, the earlier you will likely be. The farther away you are, the later you will likely be. And the previous year's champion gets to straight up pick whatever time slot that they want (but without knowledge of who will be in the other time slots).

And BOA also tries to accommodate special requests if possible. e.g. need a later time slot due to an early SAT test that morning or an earlier time slot due to a football game that evening.

Austin-area and San Antonio schools will always go Friday or EARLY Saturday morning. Though, like Daniel mentioned, there are extenuating circumstances.

Though for some reason, Leander schools get to go in the last two blocks on Saturday. I guess because they are farther north?

odd.

It is possible that the ISD wouldn't let them compete if they would have to miss a football game.

There has been a lot of talk about bands that are "Locks" for BOA SA finals this year. It seemed like a good time to take the emotion out of it and cut to the chase. If you look at BOA SA past results, you will find that these bands have made the finals each of the past 5 years:

LD Bell

Cedar Park

Churchill

Hebron

Marcus

Reagan

Bowie and Woodlands have made finals 4 of the past 5 years. It is probably not a coincidence that nearly all these bands made UIL 5A State finals last year (Cedar Park is 4A so they get an extra kudo)

If anyone is looking to place a friendly wager, you may want to start by knowing that half the finals spots may well be taken. Please feel free to discuss and I hope everyone has a great time in San Antonio!!

Maybe we should talk about bands that will have a shot of making finals, not so much bands that ALWAYS make finals, that's no fun.

I agree. We all know Marcus and Bowie and LD Bell and them will make it. But what of the other bands that can take the remaining finals spots? Or better yet, the bands that very well could sneak into finals?

I very well think Vandegrift could make it if they have a good performance that day and same with Brazoswood.

Unfortunately Hebron hasn't had a great year so far 3rd at Birdville to Mansfield and Flower Mound and 4th at TOC to Haltom, Centennial, and Mansfield as well as 10th at BOA Arlington. I'm not saying they definitely won't make finals (i mean it's still Hebron) but they will have to push pretty hard to get a spot due to the level of competition this year.

I think Brazoswood has a great shot at finals. They have a very creative show that is very different from everyone elses, and they have a great sound.

Marching Contest are like football games.... On any given day even the best teams can be beaten, rare as that is... it can happen. All it takes is for the other team (band) to be in best form and all the planets to align. That's what makes it so exciting - just believe you have a chance and play to win...

AHHHH I'm so glad they made the UT- Tx Tech game at 11am so I can go to San Antonio and watch finals! (Assuming Coppell makes finals of course). Just had to share that with everybody lol

I'm a UT fan as well but to me any college football/marching band fan is still going to have a tough choice with LSU-Bama being on at the same time of the finals.

I have two FRIDAY PRELIMS tickets that I'd like to sell. They are general admission. Ticketmaster has them for $17.00 plus fees for a total of $23.20. I'm trying to get rid of them so I'll sell them face-value at $17.00 each.

Please send me a message if you are interested. I can mail them to you or meet up in the San Antonio area.

Air Force Academy High School... is this their first time at this Super Regional?

As always, looks like some great competition.

Looking at your bubble, I have a good feeling about Westlake this year. I feel fine pushing them up to Finals.

Go ahead and stick Haltom in that bubble, too.

Good luck! Wish I could be there to watch.

My alma mater just posted the prelim schedule for Friday and Saturday.

Friday schedule 12:00pm-8:00pm

Saturday schedule 7:30am-3:30pm

Very glad to see Haltom in the final spot! :D What a great finish for prelims! I don't mind one bit seeing Haltom left off of several people's "lists." Nothing would please me more than to see Haltom blow every last person in the audience AND the judges away with an outstanding performance. They've got it in them. The show is great. If they perform it solidly and polished(as I expect that they will), there will be jaws dropping all over the place. I'm really looking forward to it...and yes, I'm biased...but I'm also a former marching band member. I've never seen anything like what Haltom is doing this year.

There are several shows I haven't seen yet, and I'm looking forward to finally getting to see them! Mansfield's show is very cool, although I'm interested in seeing how they're cutting out two minutes of it.(At TOC it was right at 10 minutes long) Someone said the last block on Saturday looks amazing, and I agree. However, every block seems to have some pretty awesome bands in it. This is going to be quite the competition, and I don't envy the judges at all.

Good luck to ALL bands participating in BOA SA(and DMI, too). Keep the Spirit!

I have a feeling both Mansfield and Haltom will make finals although either band is capable of placing anywhere from 17th to 5th easily, so its hard to say where they will end up. (I know there are only 14 spots in finals.) I would put Legacy on the bubble due to the fact that they sound very good but i don't know how well all of the standing still and dancing will play over with the judges considering the level of competition. I would also put Hebron on the bubble just because they are not having a very Hebron-like year for some reason, a lot can change in 2 weeks but i don't think that Hebron should be considered a certainty in finals by any means.

The time limit is only an issue at UIL competitions. That is why many bands have a "UIL-version" of their show that they perform just for those events. Although if somebody else has any new information feel free to correct me.

Well, I suppose I should've tried to catch them at UIL then. I can't help but find it odd that there are different versions of a show, but whatever directors feel they need to do to try to impress and win competitions. I understand making changes. All bands make changes as the year goes, but actually having two different "versions" seems odd to me. Seems it would be a more balanced competition if there was a more specific time limit than "between 7-11 minutes long."

I wanted to add that Richland also has a very nice show this year. Trinity sounds very good, as well. They are definitely improving. Even under the shadow of their State champ football team, they stand out. I'll get to see Colleyville Heritage's show the night before BOA, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Nothing beats getting to see the bands perform at competition, though. I can't stand the rudeness of the crowds at football games. I wish all the bands the very best! May all the performers be able to calm their nerves and put their best show out on the field. Good luck!
