RHSPitster Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 Is anyone surprised Richland made 14th? I just want to hear opinions... And what did you guys think of our show? Quote

So many defensive band kids You're not alone. I was excited by these results for a few reasons. The first being the success of the bands that will be representing us at GN's. The Woodlands will definitely be in medal contention and it looks like CTJ has finally arrived to the potential we knew they would a couple of years ago. The sky is the limit for these guys. And I definitely wouldn't count out Spring. Cedar Park managed to turn a 9th place SA finish to a 10th place GN's placement last year, so Spring should definitely have a shot. It will be an uphill battle though. The other reason I was excited was the free for all at the top of the standings. For the first time in a while it wasn't Bell and Marcus running away with it, but 4 bands who each had a legitimate shot at winning this thing. We say it all the time, but I think last night TRULY came down to who had the best show THAT night, and not just the best show. I'm just sad that I had to miss such an epic top 4. Really makes me excited for the future of this contest. And of a course a much deserved congrats to all the centex bands, primarily the ones from the Austin area. Bowie almost won this thing, Round Rock surprised everyone, and Anderson was that darkhorse that no one expected! Much deserved success for these bands. Quote

jmj Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 What an amazing group of finalists at this event! Quote

Looks like there might be some shades of Round Rock's 'The Dragon' show from last year in their show. I think they won the Pomona Festival this year. Does anyone know for sure? Their division they won. Quote

They were 17th after prelims so they got close to making finals. I was quite impressed with them as were the folks that were sitting around me. Quote
Drum major Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Really enjoyed Air Academy - thought they deserved finals... Quote
clarinetbabe9696 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Did anyone else think it was weird how some bands had a pretty big point difference between Individual and Ensemble music? The Woodlands and Aledo had about a three point difference, then Brazoswood had about 5 points in between!! Quote
Rubisco Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I just determined the rankings in each subcaption and caption for the three TX bands going to Grand Nats this year for both prelims and finals of BOA SA. I've attached the rankings as a word document, for those interested. Quote

Yes, I think there were some pretty strange things going on in prelims (well, throughout the entire thing, really). It's beyond me, for instance, how The Woodlands can score in the 19's in both ensemble performance subcaptions while scoring in the 16's in the individual performance subcaptions. I know they're not the same thing, but really? As I said before, The Woodlands was scoring in the 16's in the individual subcaptions at the Conroe regional a month ago. Quote

I bet if McNeil had that last finals spot (instead of 39th) then you would have ranked them in the top five just behind Cedar Park and put Round Rock fourteenth. Hey wanna learn something cool? Other drumlines stand still too. It's called a HOLD. In fact, Round Rock has fewer holds than most of the other bands at that competition. I just took a count: Round Rock drumline has a total of 6 holds, which include just 7 sets of their ~100 set show. And in one of those holds, they aren't even playing: it's during the Ballad! So please stop ragging on our drumline for only standing still (as if it's even a big deal!) and start recognizing what's actually going on. Whenever the McNeil drumline starts playing some of the notes Round Rock does (I'll even let y'all try it standing still) then I'll start considering your comments as legitimate. Until then, please stop underrating the Round Rock Band/Drumline. I completely agree with this statement.Rock Drums does so much hardcore stuff that other drum lines probably can't even understand what we're doing, much less play it (especially while marching our show that isn't easy) Edited November 7, 2011 by KB Bass Captain Quote

Looks like this band has the actual "playbook." Quote

Even if there was something wonky with the individual judges (seems there was), they were low across the board (indicated by Brazoswood who placed something like 31 and The Woodlands who placed 3rd in prelims, both with significantly lower individual scores) so it probably didn't screw the overall end result up too much, if at all. ~ME~ Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Hey!!! I have a super cool idea! Let's go a year without pointless bickering about placements! Every band busted their butts regardless of the year they had, and in result, we gave the crowd one of the best BOA SA's ever. Those that made finals deserved it, And those of us that didn't have next year to prove ourselves, because words won't change anyone's opinions, regardless of what they are. We were all fantastic, so let's treat each other like the family we are as an activity! I think our directors would appreciate it rather than reading arguments if they were to see this for whatever reason... Anyways...Congrats to everybody on a truly FANTASTIC year!!! Let's keep pushing the competitiveness of marching band in Texas! It's taking an AMAZING direction! Quote

Donezo Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 (edited) Perhaps I'm just an old curmudgeon who will never be a fan of the BOA system, but I find it more than a little disturbing that Marcus won Music and Visual in prelims.......yet they finished 2nd? Call me old fashioned, but I feel like the band who the judges agree marched and played the best should come in first. Everything else is a bit out of the kids' hands. I'm glad the band who won the performance captions in finals went on to win the whole contest. Also, I always scratch my head over Coppell's every other year flip-flop. Top five at state marching contest, then misses BOA SA finals. Is that group the biggest disconnect between the BOA/UIL scoring systems? Then again, they seem to have stepped out of their comfort zone a bit this year. Edited November 7, 2011 by Donezo Quote

Congrats to Akins, Anderson, Bowie, Cedar Park, Cedar Ridge, Crockett, Leander, McNeil, Pflugerville, Rouse, Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, Westlake, and Westwood for their performances at the three BOA Regionals this year! Thank you for the congratulations. Even though Cedar Ridge didn't make finals this year, I'm really hoping that next year will be our year. We'll finally have seniors and I know since I'll be a senior myself I really want to go out with a bang. Quote
Drum major Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Becoming a Cedar Ridge fan... Been watching you guys get better and better with every march.. Don't be surprised if next year you are one of those "dark horses" !!! Quote

You're right in saying that design is out of the kids' hands, but the fun with BOA is that there is a greater focus on the artistry, pomp, and pageantry of marching band. Sounds like enjoying the UIL State Marching Band competitions is the way for you to go. Being a more educationally-focused competition, you can enjoy the rewarding of excellence and perfection in performance. You have to approach both unique adjudication systems with the fact in mind that they have a distinct place in the marching band world. Once you are comfortable with that fact, you can enjoy each of the performances that much more. Quote
