Probably should use a ocr (optical character recognition) so you don't have to type in the data individually, don't want you not finishing homework That's what I was going to do, so thanks! are you gonna post it on here? However, every band runs the risk of having the individual music/visual judge come up to the few students who may be struggling with their shows. The ensemble judge may hear a full sound but the individual judge will dock the program if he comes across students who are not playing their notes. Field judges usually take good sized samples. You'd be surprised how often students freeze up with they see a green polo shirt in front of them. And being in percussion I never really worry about the field judges: they have no idea what we're even playing He came and stood in front of me on Friday and all he was saying was "Yea! Yea!!! YEA!!!" into his recorder. It was great Quote

But I think the problem is that if the individual judges focus too much on a handful of kids not doing a good job and judge a band harshly based on that small group, they're not taking a good sample. The issue of not playing is big. An individual music judge does not like to hear (or not hear, I suppose) that. Quote

Mellophone77 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Gotta say, this competition was amazing in just about every way. The level all of the bands performed on was insane--I mean, with a slightly better performance I'm willing to bet most bands could've jumped a place or two. And to echo what someone said earlier, this was the first year in a while where I felt like I couldn't guess the results as they were announcing them (not to mention the close scores/caption scoring were all so close). It really could've been anyone's game. I'd also like to throw a shout out to Plano East. Being from my hometown, I was really excited (as well as disappointed) to see that they placed fifteenth on such a stacked year. Quote
Marchingfan27 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 (edited) A few questions: 1. Why are the marchers of bowie so compatible and awesome? 2. What did yall think of Churchills show this year as a sign of a come back? As a spectator this year I heard alot of "they're back" in prelims. And as a a former charger, I was just wondering what yall thought 3. Woodlands V Avon? Who thinks Woodlands can take it all this year? Personally was my favorite at SA and conroe 4. Spring in GN Finals? i didn't see their show, so I don't know much about them or their progress this year. 5. How is possible to get no captions but still place 2nd over bands that won GE (woodlands over bowie) I was super shocked to even hear about that Edited November 8, 2011 by Marchingfan27 Quote

I think the reason most people considered Churchill to be in decline was because of their absence from the State Marching Contest. This wasn't really a sign of decline, Area D has been exploding with great bands who are just now spreading their wings. I'd expect another tough competition there next year, especially with SEVEN 5A Area D bands in BOA finals, and EIGHT including Cedar Park. All of the state qualifiers from Area D last year plus Churchill ended up in finals at BOA SA. Quote

Woodlands was fantastic, but Avon... it's Avon. I do want to see Woodlands win though. Texas needs to be on top again!!! GO TEAM TEXAS! 4. I personally think Spring has a great chance. I love their show, and with a few more rehearsals to clean, they'll be great. 5. The score differences between Woodlands and Bowie were small. Woodlands just did better in Visual and Marching and their advantage was enough to push them into 1st. Same thing happened last year... Bowie won a caption, Marcus won the other 2. Marcus was first, then Bell, then Bowie Quote

There's a lot of hours they give up because they want to be the best they can be. It's like the old saying, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Quote
Brenden Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I think, regarding Churchill, that if they keep up the momentum of this year and keep the trend of improving every year since their staff changes they should have no trouble advancing to state next year as they finished higher on the left technical side of the judges sheets than SFA and regean, even higher than Johnson in music. Since UIL likes to focus on those aspects and not 60% GE, it should be an exciting year for them at UIL. Quote

Even Marcus, normally a bit restrained, I felt like let it rip a bit in their final movement. I'm just going to list the things I loved about each band and random thoughts. Please forgive my stream of consciousness: Ronald Reagan: -the gorgeous Engulfed Cathedral ballad with the guard rising up seemingly out of nowhere on the white tarp with the purple double flags -the brilliant brass quartet of Beethoven's 7th to open the show -beautiful woodwinds handling a great portion of the melody during Jupiter while on the move. The Woodlands: -Everything! -the Matrix-esque guard look -the recurring snippets of Beethoven 7 and Uninvited -so much technical demand of music while on the move -the singer on Uninvited I need to see it again to catch everything I missed because so much is going on. Spring: -All the soloists and small ensembles sounded great highlighting the snippets of the major themes from Symphonic Metamorphosis -the guard ending with their swirling butterfly wings SFA -the way that the Angels fill the empty spaces created by the band -the boldness and the volume of the music Marcus -wow, the music! Technically brilliant! -the guard, the balloons, the crazy lights on the ferris wheels! -the interval spacing is darn near perfect on every set -the amazing marching of the rotating ferris wheel at the end and the crazy insane technical runs -the easy breezy way that the whole ensemble plays Churchill - -some impeccable interval spacing on some gorgeous curved sets -beautiful sounds on Aquarium -fantastic drumline Round Rock -all the gorgeous sunbeam sets! -some ably handled difficult drill -great subtle playing on Homage to Perotin -the rotating pass through sunbeams at the end -the band running off the field and out the tunnel at the end -beautiful guard work Bowie- -the power! Those sounds! -absolutely incredible mellophone section -brilliant tubas on The Pines of Rome -greatest opening statement ever on Belshazzar's Feast- rich, warm, spine tingling chords -stellar front ensemble throughout the show - loved those beautiful bells at the beginning -tremendous interpretation of the Shostakovich Piano Concerto 1 -the snowflakes! The icy blue guard! -those crazy snowflake sets and that great set that looked like snow capped mountains! -The flower made of snowflakes paired with The Rite of Spring at the end was icing on the cake! Anderson- -delightful show with great power -the flute duet on the Flower Duet was simply gorgeous -Polovtsian Dances sounding incredible! How often do you hear that on the field played that well?!? -they had a nicely executed 4-to-5 pass through -they had a great complicated curved form that set and then moved and stayed perfectly intact and was just fantastic Flower Mound- -the woodwinds at the beginning sounded so blended and lush on Gymnopedie -the flags at the end were the same as the painting up by the sideline when the artists were painting! Very cool! -the band with the trap set player was a great touch -despite the many light touches, the brass really showed off some major power, too -the guard was spot on and really drove home this lovely evocation of Paris Cedar Park -the volume! Just great dynamics all the way around. They know when to be subtle and when to blow you away! -lovely clarinet soloist in the ballad -bold and beautiful trumpet sounds -brilliant marching on all the rotating blocks, triangles, 4to5 pass through -great, snappy visuals throughout -great furious woodwind run in the closer -the giant M for Mahler at the end LD Bell- -the guard! Truly brilliant flag work! They looked fierce with those headpieces -so many perfect circles! -so much musical demand while rotating/expanding shrinking/creating those perfect circles -beautiful flute soloist -Shostakovich 10, movement 2!! My all-time favorite piece of classical music played superbly! Claudia Taylor Johnson -super guard! I don't think they missed a single rifle toss! -sailor euphonium soloist on my favorite movement of Lincolnshire -the front ensemble! So many notes on The Brisk Young Sailor! -some tricky and superfast matching done great -nice addition of all the posy tarps -great trumpet solo on Rufford Park and thank you for playing the heck out of the gorgeous Horkstow Grange in the closer This was an incredible event that I'll not soon forget. You are all truly winners and should be so proud of your seasons. God bless Texas marching bands! I think you did a beautiful job of summing things up and showing respect and appreciation for all of these great bands and shows. Thank you for the time and careful thought you put into personalizing each comment and tribute!!! Quote
Centex_band_mom Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Just need to get a few things off my chest so I appreciate this forum and the ability to do that. First, I feel badly for Marcus because although I would not have put them in first, it seemed like they were scored lower than what it seemed like their performance deservered. A number have people have mentioned something wonky (love that term by the way) with some of the scores and I agree. The most disappointing score or ranking to me is Bowie in the music category. I believe they got a 7th and 5th or something like that when they had some very beautiful and difficult music. It is one of the big things that everyone seemed to love so much about Bowie was the music and I believe if the music scores had been higher (or even closer to what they got in prelims or other performances) and had better reflected their performance, they would have got 2nd or possibly 1st. This final show was definitely one of their best with lots of beautiful warmth and emotion. Also, I am a big fan of CTJ although I liked the music from last year's show better. And I think Reagan should have scored higher in finals than they did. I did not like their show much last year, but I was mesmerized by some of the marching this year. Finally, I am the farthest thing from a band expert. I'm just a mom who loves watching these great bands so I know there are likely plenty of things that the judges saw and heard that I did not, and they definitely have the expertise. Thanks to all those students and parents involved with all of the bands at this BOA. We all know the extreme hours and effort they put into this great thing called marching band, and they all deserve to know how entertained and moved all of us were by their shows! Quote

Chryco4 Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 I really appreciate the support for our show and our chances of making finals Grand Nats. Since we placed 7th at San Antonio for the past two years, we were a bit shocked when we found at that we made 13th. Most of the band wasn't in the best mood for a couple days afterwards, but the excitement for Indy is pushing us on from that and well...I can't wait Congrats to The Woodlands for kicking butt this past weekend plus I give my greatest thanks to them for their kind gesture towards us. Congrats to Claudia Taylor Johnson as well and their show will very likely be my favorite of this year because Lincolnshire Posy happens to be my favorite piece ever. I'm looking forward to seeing both bands at Indy We leave tomorrow after school! GO TEAM TEXAS!! Quote

skill Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Congrats to all the bands that competed at the BOA in San Antonio. Everyone was really great. The shows were amazing, and entertaining, stunning to say the least. To the finals bands, other than WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! would probably not be enough. They were so incredible. I don't know how one can judge, but they did a great job. I was very happy to see our band back up into the top 10. I am standing up and clapping to all! Quote
Nope Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 (edited) Am I the only one who is consistently disappointed by Coppell's placement at this competition every year?? Don't misunderstand me I'm not saying I'm disappointed by the performance, they do incredible every year, but I feel like a 5A consistent state marching finalist and honor band finalist would come out with a stronger showing in the placements. I guess what I'm saying is what changes would they have to make program wise in order to do well in these competitions?? Because BOA is already packed with talent, and seeing programs get up there like Coppell and Duncanville would make my life complete. Edited November 11, 2011 by Nope Quote

Coppell plays technically excellent shows that are lacking in general effect. Essentially, they do what they do well, but the contest puts more weight on what you do specifically. Quote

One of the things that caught my eye about Marcus at retreat is that they were some of the most gracious and respectful guys out there...even hearing other bands who were making negative comments towards them about their placement....Even the next day on the riverwalk i met a few of them and you would have never known what kind of caliber their organization because of how humble and nice they were...I never been a Marcus fan before but this made me a fan for a long time. Much respect to Marcus kids. Quote
