Newman Smith isn't in the running for finals; finals only include the top five from Standstill 1 Silver & Red, and Marching. Newman Smith is in Standstill 2 - Silver.

Just my thoughts/predictions...

SS1 Red-

I have a feeling that Mansfield is going to win this division, and honestly, I feel like maybe Pflugerville has a chance. Of course, I don't know too much about most Austin drumline programs, so I could be totally wrong about this.

SS1 Silver-

Wow, this division is stacked, as someone said before. You have Lake Highlands, Martin, Plano East, Cedar Park, Oak Ridge, and Round Rock all in one competition. Honestly, I hope LH and Martin's position in the competition won't affect their usual Top 5 Drumline status. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a battle between RR and CP though. Cedar Park won two years ago, and RR won last year--and both have phenomenal programs.

Marching-

Marching is almost just as stacked like SS1 Silver. There's Flower Mound, Lewisville, Colleyville Heritage, Wakeland, Coppell, Keller, Hebron, Fossil Ridge, and Allen. It'll be interesting who will win (I have no doubt in my mind that Flower Mound will win though, they have been on a roll lately). I'm more interested in how the captions play out though. Just like SS1 Silver, it'll be tough to get into the Top 5, and it's surefire that some of these amazing programs won't have a chance to play again that night.

I hear Pflugerville has lost a lot of good players, and after hearing them two nights ago at a football game, I'm not sure if they'll do well.

As for SS1, CP definitely has a great program and they are gonna be the part of the biggest competition. RR has some insane music that most schools don't even attempt, but it really comes down to if they can play it themselves. Martin did well last year: they were trashed by one judge and ended up with a lower placing than they deserved. Two judges gave them first in ALL categories. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard Plano East won PdlC, so they must be good this year. Their music is never too terrible difficult, but they play it piss clean which is why they always do well. Oak Ridge moved up from SS2 Silver, so I really don't know much about them.

As for marching, I think you have a good guess with Flower Mound. I don't really know much about those schools considering I'm from Central Texas, and have never actually seen any of them perform, but I've heard great things about all of them.

The standstills leave much to be desired. They're using marching percussion instruments, they should be marching....and not marching in place! We might as well be watching concert season!

Marching is where it's at!

Predictions for who makes finals in marching-

1-Colleyville Heritage

2-Flower Mound

3-Lewisville

4-Justin Northwest

5-Keller

Standstill division is more about quality of music and less about the visual aspect. Marching incorporates a visual aspect. Both divisions are equally respectable. Many of the groups who participate in Standstill division are at just as high a level as those who participate in marching, but decide not to learn the extra drill required to enter the marching division.

I get it that the standstill is NOT about the marching. I was just saying that from a spectator's perspective, it's more fun to watch the marching divisions. Those kids are really putting it out there! I could by a CD if I wanted to just hear a percussion performance. I agree that ALL of those kids are talented. Your last sentence says it all for me. Good luck to all groups performing next Saturday at Lone Star!

Well the standstill division typically plays more difficult music better than the marching division because of the lack of drill. So in the standstill division it's a lot more about the music than in the marching division.

Haha, it's not an argument.

Thanks, DrummerJoe. I wasn't trying to argue, just give my opinion.

Anyway...I wanted to see was if anyone was going to make any predictions about what will happen next Saturday. Someone mentioned that it was going to be a tough night for 10 of those groups since only 5 will make it to the finals. I just hope that all groups perform at their best, since this is the Granddaddy of Drum Line Contests!

And no, I probably don't have much tact left. Life's too short to worry about other people's feelings if it's the truth.

Aww. You hurt my feelings, you left out Fossil Ridge. (Since that is my alma mater, I have to be bias! )

I guess that's the problem. While I am thrilled about the prospect of a "finals" at Lonestar, it really doesn't change much with only five lines making it to the finals. We will still only have the top 5 earning any hardware to put on the shelf in the band hall! I think in order to make it more interesting, they should have made finals the top 10. This would give the top 10 lines the chance to improve later in the evening and THAT would have made this "first-ever" finals more interesting, IMO.

Hey, they do it in marching band (ten bands in finals), we could do it here, too. So many good shows coming on Saturday. I can't wait to see them all! Good luck to everyone! Even Fossil Ridge! All I am gonna say about my favorite group is Choo-Choo!

I think Round Rock comes out the winner at this contest. They play really well and their hands look great. I think Cedar Park will come close, but i think Round Rock just looks cleaner.

Cedar Park and Round Rock aren't really the only contenders for the champion. Really it's between those two, Plano East, Oak Ridge, Martin, and Richland. That's based on what I've seen in the past (and heard from CP and about Plano East). Any of the lines in the division could have had a miraculous good season and take the championship. One difference this year is the finals, though. A change in position may take place, who knows.

They changed the schedule and I didn't realize! I posted the new versions of SS1-S, SS1-R and M divisions and the new link to the schedule. The other two divisions had large changes, and I'm too lazy to change them :D

Can someone make a prediction of finalists from Stand Still 1 Red?

Just want a general idea.

Just from a quick glance:

Mansfield

Wylie

Vista Ridge

Pflugerville

Leander

I don't know a lot of those schools well though, some of those I just chose because I know them well and they have done well in the past. I'd be the most iffy about Pflugerville and Vista Ridge on that list. Possibly Leander too, considering they marching one tenor player if I remember correctly. Granted he's an amazing player and is always perfectly in time (that's based off the performance I saw at VRMF), I just don't know if the judges will give him credit.

How do you feel about Mansfield and Wylie?

On a side note, what about Pflugerville?

I'd say it'd be close competition between both of them. Wylie has been in the SS1-S division previously, I don't know how they'll fare with the SS1-R division but I can expect them to do great. Mansfield is of course the returning champion of that class.

I saw Pflugerville's line at a football game and they were obviously not at their best. I also heard that they lost a lot of vets and are in a rebuilding year. I mainly included them because they have done well in the past, and has gone up against big names like Cedar Park and Round Rock in local contests.

I think the only way to tell how it will turn out is to see what happens Saturday. I can assure you that there is a lot more competition for the top spots this season: it has been quite the season with many great marching bands and I can only expect the same to be true about drumlines. For example, there are at least drumlines in SS1-S that stand a really good chance at winning the division, whereas in the past the division has been dominated by 2 or 3 groups.

That being said, their may be a line that will surprise us all. I haven't seen many of these lines this year, and frankly I don't know what a lot of them can put out there. I'll be watching the finals for 4A state tomorrow and see what happens percussion wise, but that will be my furthest insight on some of the 4A schools outside of Central Texas.

Also, a potential competitor for next year will be Vandegrift. I really hope they decide to go to Lonetar next year: they placed just behind Cedar Park and Round Rock in percussion at VRMF. And their director is none other than the great Paul Pape: CP's director when they won standstill big time in 2009.

Anyways, there's my $00.02
