Great job to all to who competed!

Congrats to all the finalist bands for a job well done!

Kinda wish I could've seen Centennial, Vandegrift, and Cedar Park's show :(

Congratulations on your first state finals appearance, Dawson! I know those of us at Friendswood were a little surprised that you guys were not higher up.

Thanks! We weren't really upset about the results since what matters to us is the experience after the show :) but you guys did amazing! My dad recorded your show and showed me and I was stunned....

Area D is really turning into the most competitive area in Texas for band. Eight of the BOA finalists were Area D bands, and all four of the Area D bands attending 4A state were finalists. Plus, there were other bands in Area D that didn't make the top four at the area contest and therefore didn't advance that would have done really well at state.

All in all, next year is looking like another competitive year for Area D.

Will be interesting to see if anyone moves up to 5A for realignment. I've been told that Cedar Ridge should...If they don't, Area D will be even scarier in 2 years. Not sure if anyone else is on the verge of moving up or down? Either way the talent in Area D is growing exponentially!

Cedar Ridge has only freshmen, sophomores and juniors this year. Next year they should definitely move up to 5A, especially considering all the Round Rock schools have similar sized feeding districts and the other four are 5A.

Lake Travis is expected to move up to 5A.

I'll keep preaching for Area B. Yes, we didn't have as many high placements as Area D, but to get 3 out of 6 bands into finals, 2 of which are from the same school district, that's pretty darn impressive. Plus, Frisco (where Wakeland and Centennial are from) had 4 bands make Area B finals, and next state year there will be SIX Frisco schools competing. Wakeland and Centennial are both in transition phases right now too. Wakeland lost a good portion of it's band program to Lone Star High School and is rebuilding from that. Centennial is under a brand new head director, and most of the staff there has only been around for 2-3 years. Plus, of the 180 kids that marched at Centennial this year, about 100 of them were freshmen and sophomores.

Keep an eye out for Area B in 2013!!

Does anyone have links to the videos of the other finals performances?

This is Centennial's finals!

I wish I could find a video of our prelims, which was (in my opinion at least) better. Though I am in pit so I couldn't see the marching or anything, our prelims just sounded a lot more powerful.

Your Prelims had a lot more energy, but finals was a lot cleaner and more balanced. Definitely a more uil friendly performance that night.

Forgot to add that Hendrickson is another school expected to move to 5A next year.

Wow, there are going to be a lot of bands not attending state that deserve to from Area D. Hendrickson ad Lake Travis added to the seven elite 5A schools will undoubtedly make for the toughest contest yet. I'm graduating this year, so I'll be watching the fight from the stands.

In general, I think this was the most competitive 4A year evar. Live, learn, breath, these moments of the 2011 season were so iconic. AKA the virgin sacrifice by Alice HS, a winning show sans props, the pressure to defend the title of a 4A champion etc, etc,

I agree with your most competetive comment. I watched online and i really would have hated to be a judge cause i would have just preferred to kill myself over try place these bands, especially the final 10.

Yeah, this was my thought as well. Area D was tough enough in 5A without Cedar Park, Hendrickson and Lake Travis. Throw in the San Antonio north schools and now 5a Area D is going to be filthy tough. On the other end, this move will allow more 4A Area D bands to advance to state.

Bottom line is that Area D 4A/5A is loaded with elite bands.

Cedar Park and Dripping Springs were the class of the event and definitely deserved their final spots. It did seem like bands that moved up in finals were more "play loud and stand still" instead of playing and marching a lot at the same time.

Why does UIL not institute some type of "difficulty of show" factor into scoring? It seems like the current system (at least tonight) rewards you doing an easier show really well versus a hard show to play and march well. Kind of like Texas having the issue right now with AP classses - colleges want a non-weighted GPA, and having that harder class possibly hurt your GPA becomes a negative because you want to challenge yourself.

They do factor in difficulty of show, its just not as much that you want and its not a "written" rule.

I really hope this topic doesn't go down this route. I think you could make a real case that any of 5 or 6 bands could have been ranked 1st. (Not taking anything away from the winner when I say that, I'm just giving respect to all of the great bands.) 4th isn't controversial at all. This year was my 10th as a marching band parent and our 4th trip the State Marching contest. I've seen a lot wider range of scores than 1st to 4th. Dripping Springs should be very proud of their performance. They did an amazing job. This doesn't hit the radar screen of scores that seem a little nutty.

We once went with a band that got 4 first place rankings and an 8th. We finished 3rd that year. The only thing that still bothers me is our band director had such a bitter attitude about it and that is what my children remember. I wish my girls had no knowledge of the breakdown of the scores. All those months of hard work, a fantastic ride through all the contests leading up to State and all the pride of a job well done thrown away because one judge didn't care for their show? They remember the year they got robbed instead of the year they really did a great job and finished 3rd in State!

I know DS music was really watered down early in the marching season. At Friendswood, the trumpets had the woodwind feature because the clarinets couldnt play the technique. But this weekend the woodwinds had THEIR feature and threw down on it!

Seems to be a theme in Area D. Great 4A year ('07/'11) then some of those bands move up to make a great 5A year ('08/'12) Then an iffy year in 4A ('09)...Don't think we'll see a weakness in 4A in 2 years thought. Still plenty of talent left behind.

I saw 2 bands each with completly different styles win at the dome tuesday night. DS and CP both won state in my mind; they were so far ahead of the pack and both put on the most memorable shows of the night. CP won state with its power and precission, DS with their amazingly clean marching and beautiful sound.

I guess since you are going down this road I will also. We (Friendswood) decided not to play the "game" with our show this year. We went all out - with 98 sets, there isn't much time to stand around and relax. And maybe that is why we did not win - our show was not as easy to clean as other shows.

Way to keep it classy Friendswood.
