Danpod Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Howdy folks! Thanks for your participation in last week's version of 50 Words. Let's keep it going. I explain the topic in fifty words. You guys take it from there. Use as many words as you want! The band is NOT there to only serve the Football team. Band is taken for granted by everyone outside the activity. Parade? Wooo!! Eye of the Tiger in the 4th Quarter? Wooo!! Halftime performance of the contest show? Yawn. Clap louder for us or else "Charge" gets held ransom!!! Boom. Quote
Xenon Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 You should go to one of LDBell's home football games. The stands are absolutely PACKED. Full of band parents and former students. After halftime the entire stadium is empty. Quote

It was Homecoming and I believe that the Drum Major was named Homecoming Queen. Quote
BHSClarinet2013 Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Our home crowd does a pretty good job at being a pretty good crowd. There's no disrespect since the band doesn't really have that stigma at our school. Certain away games are a different story however. I remember one game against a Dallas ISD school two years ago. The school was known for being very rude and abrasive, but to resort to chucking trash at the band during our performance? WOW. Our director said he was about ready to have the Drum Majors blow the whistle and have us come off the field. He believed that a crowd that rude didn't deserve a performance if they weren't going to be respectful. Thankfully the show picked up musically and the crowd went silent. It could have been worse, and I'm sure worse has happened to other bands. This is just my experience. Quote

Was that school in the colors of Blue/Gold, if so I may know exactly who you're speaking of and they have been doing that ever since I was a kid Quote

Band is taken for granted by everyone outside the activity. Parade? Wooo!! Eye of the Tiger in the 4th Quarter? Wooo!! Halftime performance of the contest show? Yawn. Clap louder for us or else "Charge" gets held ransom!!! Boom. Let's see... I was at a game last year where fans on the other side of the field blew those annoying horn things during the performance. It was cross-town rivals, though, so no real surprise there. This last week, however, I actually yelled at a group of annoyingly loud teens on our side while our band was performing. I was videotaping the band and this group of kids were fighting loudly with each other. I asked nicely for them to be quiet, TWICE. When they continued, I went over and said, "Excuse me! SHUT UP!" They looked at me like, "wow, band mom," and one genius said, "She must have a kid in the band." Noooo. What was your first clue? Well, they apparently had some derrogatory comments to make about the band and attempted to say those comments loud enough for me to hear, but I didn't hear them. Someone told me about it later. They were quiet enough for me to get a good video of the show, so I was happy. I'm not a confrontational person AT ALL. In fact, I hate it. But when it comes to making memories with my kids, I fully expect people to give me my eight minutes per halftime. If you want to chat or fight or act stupid, go downstairs under the bleachers. If you want me to yell at you to "Shut Up!" keep on being loud. *sigh* I can't think of another time where I had a problem with crowd noise/disrespect. Most of the time, the stands empty once the band has played. lol I much prefer contests, though. Everyone is there for the same reason, and rarely do you find crowd issues. There were some kids from one of the performing bands at PEMI who sat behind us and loudly critiqued the band that was on the field. I turned and gave them the "evil eye" a couple of times, but they were clueless. It's really sad to see/hear kids from other bands who don't show respect.
