Not that they aren't outstanding players, but because Marcus, Bowie, and apparently CTJ are usually at the top of their game. I wonder if the weather tipped the scales in favor of CP. Who would have guessed Hebron would be back with such strength?! Kudos! Quote

Who would have guessed Hebron would be back with such strength?! Kudos! I was equally surprised by Berkner- the weather was not beneficial to them as they reportedly had a very electronic second movement. They got fifth at this contest last year, right? It is really fun to drive from Round Rock out three and half hours to see finals only to be told three hours into the dive that it was cancelled, this was an evening of disappointment. On a positive note I am very curious to see those middle four. I bet it will be:6 Richland, 7 Reagan, 8 Coppell, 9 Flower Mound Edited September 30, 2012 by T.Stechnij Quote

Statebound Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 All the kids and directors get extra kudo's today-particularly the Cedar Park folks. I was there for all but the first set of bands and it was tough day. This can be another topic for another day, but BOA judging is becoming a mystery to me. I thought that CTJ obviously had the best performance of the day and I have had no affiliation with that organization. How can the same bands win every category in every classification? It sure looked like CTJ, Marcus, Hebron, and probably Bowie have state caliber shows. It's going to be a fun season! Quote

Few random thoughts: - Its nice to see CTJ moving on up into a top 3 spot. Wasn't sure if they'd be able to but they proved me wrong. Can't wait to see the show! - Nice to see Hebron recover after last year (placement wise--I actually really liked that show, lol) - Vandegrift right on Cedar Park's heels score wise. It'll be real interesting to see how that plays out late season - On a similar note, Keller Central over Keller by a slim margin. Finally, thanks for having the live blog! It was the first season since '09 I wasn't able to make it to the North Texas regional, so really appreciate it! Edited September 30, 2012 by Mellophone77 Quote

Check out 10th place scores: 68ish, 68ish, 69ish, then 74ish. 5th place is 73ish, 75ish, 75ish, and now it's 79ish. Unless the judges got together and decided to inflate their scores at similar degress, I'm just blown away by the level of achievement this early in the game! Quote
clarineticorn Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Just wanna say a huge congrats (and a shoutout!) to the BVW kids. I met a lot of them at the MFA Summer Symposium the past two summers and they were all awesome. I am so incredibly proud of my kiddos from CTJ. They're pushing harder than ever (from what I can tell on Facebook) and the hard work is really paying off. Everyone deserves recognition, though, especially for pushing through the miserable and wet weather today. I applaud everyone from where I sit in Houston. (And I am thankful that Reliant isn't open-air and also that I could get a decent 4G speed there to check the live blog on a "bathroom break". Go coogs.) I'm really surprised that there were so many (relatively) high scores this early in the season. Are the judges going easy or are the shows really that good? I absolutely cannot wait for BOA San Antonio now. Hopefully all my coursework lets up enough that weekend that I'll be able to go home without worrying about not finishing it all. Quote
Xenon Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 I'm really proud of how the crowd handled BVW. As a whole, they cheered louder for BVW than any other band and really gave them tons of respect for traveling all the way down here. Quote
mellopwn1 Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 (edited) I honestly believe that this seeming score inflation is increased level of performance. Maybe its just me, but a few years ago I was much less compelled to rewatch shows that place 6-10. Now those are some of my favorites. And at the top, Bowie, CP, and CTJ have been getting closer and closer to the elite level of performance that used to be reserved for only Marcus, Bell, and (in good years) The Woodlands. Texas has always been the best place for band, but I think that its getting even better (from top to bottom). Edited September 30, 2012 by mellopwn1 Quote
Centex_band_mom Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 I am only in my 3rd year as a marching band parent so I don't have a long stretch of experience in following various BOA events. I am curious how many times they have cancelled finals and if anyone knows why this BOA finals was cancelled? I know it was wet and we all got wet as well (despite the ponchos and umbrellas), but there didn't seem to be any lightning, and my understanding (based more on hearsay than fact) is that many of the finalist bands and directors were willing and eager to proceed. Was it because a band or two left after their performance or would they have gone on without them? I only got to see bands from about Coppell on and just want to say that all did a great job in the rain and still gave GREAT performances! Thanks for persevering. Quote

I am sure that bands such as Hebron and Vandergrift would have been very happy after seeing their scores as they placed MUCH higher than last year. Reversely, I would have expected Cedar Park to really want a finals after not being so late they weren't able to even get in uniform but they were eager to leave. At the very least I wanted a finals. I drove 2 hours and 45 minutes from Austin to make it to said finals. Needless to say I was very put off that I had turn around in Mansfield. Quote

Not a single director in the finals meeting wanted Finals after having to endure and survive a first run in the rain. The kids health and safety were TOP priority for them all. Secondary thoughts were uniforms, instruments, electronic equipment etc etc etc. We lucked out to be able to safely get prelims done, but with the possibility of the rain continuing and getting heavier(as the BOA officials stated) it just wasn't going to sway decisions. Finals cancellations are decided in the Finals meeting, by each director voicing their thoughts/opinions as to which way to proceed. BOA stated that IF it was wished, things could have proceeded into finals. The stage was set, the judges were prepared, it just simply depended on the directors....which I believe is the correct way to approach it. BTW- CP choose to not wear unis and EVERY program was given the same options as was passed down by BOA judges that it would not be held against them in regards to scores and judgement. I for one was happy to not getting home at 3,4, 5am. Sleep felt great! Quote
takigan Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 2009 BOA Houston Had some rain delays but they didn't cancel....It was pretty miserable at that event (not as bad as Denton though). The contest organizers reduced the timeblocks from 15 to 14 minutes and ditched the full finals retreat in favor of a drum majors retreat to save time, and we still ended up closing the blog at 11:45pm. BOA generally holds a dozen or so competitions nationwide each Fall plus Grand Nationals. Here's a list of each event in the past 12 years that also didn't go so smoothly. --The Louisville, KY 2009 Regional canceled Finals. --The Doylestown, PA 2008 Regional was canceled pre-contest due to weather. --The Louisville, KY 2006 Regional was canceled due to weather and moved to a local HS gym where the students performed standstill exhibition performances. --The Towson, MD 2005 Regional was canceled early in prelims due to weather. A suitable exhibition site could not be found within appropriate time. -- The 2004 Arlington, TX Regional canceled Finals. -- The 2000 Toledo, OH Regional canceled Finals. Quote

TXMarchingMadness87654 Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 While I'm sure it's frustrating for those who want to see finals, I have to agree with others who have said that it was a wise decision to cancel finals at this competition. Constant rain may not be as "bad" as if there had been lightning, but that doesn't negate health issues, etc. My family was actually planning on attending finals, but (thanks to our friends here at txbands.com) we knew that it most likely wasn't going to happen. We also didn't really want to try to watch it in the rain. It's early enough in the season to be able to catch these great bands at other competitions. Crossing my fingers that the rain comes during the week instead of on the weekends! Congratulations to all bands that participated and to those who made finals. Looking forward to seeing you all at a later date! Quote
T.Stechnij Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Don't get me wrong! It was certainly the right thing to do, BoA is a very responsible organization. Safety is always priority number uno. It was my fault for begging my dad to keep on driving even though I had a bad feeling. At least I have my MFA subscription, second best thing, right? Quote
