knoxisawesome348 Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 I'm very surprised on how little people have spoken of Plano East. They seemed to have come out of nowhere (Having last made state in 2000) but beat L.D. Bell and Richland at prelims and finals at the area B competition this year. Additionally, they were just announced a few hours ago to have made BOA San Antonio finals. It also seems they are being largely predicted to make State Finals but in all honesty, who would have predicted that a month ago before their performance at area? What does everyone think of their show? I personally hope they do well, seeing as they seem to be an underdog Quote

knoxisawesome348 Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 No, I believe Plano East has only attended the state competition in 1998 and 2000 Quote

I predict Plano in the top 15 for sure but I wouldn't bank on anything more specific than that. They're just part of the really unpredictable bubble on the last 2 or 3 spots in finals. Also, after seeing their placement at BOA SA I wouldn't call it a given. A bunch of bands beat them that they have to edge out to have a shot. They lost to Reagan, Westlake, and Richland (by a nose on the last two, admittedly) and were only 1 place ahead of Spring. All four of those groups are fighting Plano for the last couple of slots IMO, plus a few others that weren't at BOA. Of course BOA is a different ballgame than UIL, and every performance could change everything. However, this to me is a better predictor than Area, purely out of how much closer the timeframe is. Area results also tend to have fairly little bearing on State. Last time around, Westlake made 5th in Area D finals and managed to get a state finals slot. The only other band from that area that made finals was Bowie. Area B and C almost always have big shakeups in a similar vein. No one's discounting Plano, it's just a very tough contest. Quote
Donezo Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 (edited) I do think Plano East's show would have ranked higher last night had it been a UIL contest. Their 5th from the music ensemble judge bodes well (and honestly that's where I think they belonged musically.) EDIT: To resolve the earlier debate, Plano East was at State in 2002. They were 17th in prelims. 4th at 5A Area C. Edited November 4, 2012 by Donezo Quote

Coming from Rowlett, sadly, your question is fairly true... We always aimed to make state but once we got there, we soon realized it's anyone's game. I graduated from Rowlett this past June and only went to state once which was in 2010. We were so excited because we didn't make it in 2008 because Area C only had 19 bands make 1s in their region. We got first by a longshot in prelims and thought we had it in the bag, which explains our poor finals performance, therefore, being the alternate band... No one in the band in 2010 had ever been a participant in the SMC and had not experienced the sound of the Alamodome, the pressure of making finals, and the nerves that come with the contest. However, their show this year is awesome, great music and kick-butt marching. It's what we've always been known for, marching and playing our butts off. But now that there are light up props and better marching and playing than I've ever seen outta my alma matter, I and what everyone else should do, is give them a shot, being last in prelims should hopefully give them an advantage over anyone else. GOOD LUCK ROWLETT!!! GIVE 'EM heck!!! I'll be cheering you on in the stands. Quote

I'll keep it short, I have always liked Rowlett, as long as they play/march their butts off and leave it all on the field in prelims, they should be fine. Every band will be bringing every thing they have in prelims, and Rowlett should be able to go toe-to-toe with these bands. Hope to see them live for prelims/finals, I have them predicted to be in finals... Quote

Donezo Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Wow. Never thought I'd see the day when Duncanville would be out of state finals. Also, this has to be up there in terms of all time wackiest State prelims ordinals spread, though I kind of saw it coming after this panel's indecision on 3A Finals last night. Quote

Rubisco Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Just by looking at who is on the judging panel tonight, I'm thinking there will probably be some pretty radical placement shifts after finals. I find the order of the top 10 after prelims very, VERY bizarre. And no Duncanville in finals! What?! Who saw that coming? I don't think they've ever missed a finals. Quote
Steeldrum Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Who is the judging panel for finals, a different group than prelims? Quote

General gist of it is: after the school name you have the five placements from the five judges at today's contest (so, the lower the better) and the sixth number is just the five numbers added up. Band with the lowest score wins. Edit: As for what they represent, pretty much just where the judge ranked them in terms with the other groups. My thoughts on the results? Wow. Duncanville out of finals? And their scores were consistently out of finals? I missed the performance so maybe this isn't as surprising as I think it is, but dang. Never thought I'd see the day. Reagan third? After San Antonio last weekend I thought them medaling was a bit of a stretch but apparently its quite possible. Johnson in finals? Awesome! Always great seeing a new face. And as per usual, scores seem a little all over the place. The only one that confuses me is Plano East's 9 and 32 in visual I can understand 10-15 variation but 23 spot difference? Little crazy. And of course we still have finals. And since this is state, I'm expecting quite a few placement differences. Really looking forward to the webcast!! Edited November 7, 2012 by Mellophone77 Quote

When my friend called me and told me that Reagan was 3rd and The Woodlands was 10th, I thought she was joking. (Nothing against either group. I thought they would both be in, but in opposite positions.) Keller was soooo close to being the first Area A band in decades to make it to 5A State Finals. Wow. Quote
clarineticorn Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Daniel Valdez incorrectly stated in the live blog that it's CTJ's first time at state. We made state in 2010 with You Are -- placing thirteenth, just behind Reagan. It's the first year Johnson's made finals, though. Sadly, I managed to get distracted and I missed Johnson's finals performance But I'm still excited to see finals results. Prelims were a bit shocking, to say the least. I never would've thought that TWHS would be 10th...or Bowie in 6th. Quote
