If you're looking for versatility, look no further. It is arguably the best melodic instrument on the field, it can play counter-melodies... It can sound powerful, nasty, edgy... or it can sound soft, pretty, light... it can do pretty much anything. Well, maybe because most trumpet sections really suck. I am not saying you do personally. MartinHorn Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 Quote Well, maybe because most trumpet sections really suck. I am not saying you do personally. Our trumpet section is the exact opposite, they just have really large egos and that can lead to them overbalancing in a show. But it is true what Aegis fang said about trumpets, if they are good. It was so embarrasing. Quote

Fortisimo Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 Well, I would say that a well played (which is rare) French Horn does have a very nice sound in general, and I use it quite a lot to give a nice full sound in the primary chords of my compostions. They also sound nice in counterpoint with trumpets. Of course, I must say that I also love the sound and intensity of the trumpet. Trombones are alright... so long as they don't blast too much... they can add a nice low brass punch... I hate picolos. They make me want to kill something. Anything. They are ok for an effect every once in a while, like a quick solo, or adding tension on top of a huge chord... other than that... flutes to me always sound pretty airy, and they ALWAYS have vibrato. What is up with that? It sounds retarded when you do it constantly... maybe I'm just ranting... But what do I like most? Tubular Bells. Oh yes... so nice... they have a beautiful sound. Lol, but that's just me. Quote

TRtrumpet Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 Yes flutes sound nice and yea they do always seem to have a vibrato. Piccs annoy the heck out of me (no offence to any pic players on here) but they dont blend... they CUT. Frech horn and clarinets are my other favorites. Quote
QuadraticBeats Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 Most of our french horns are first year players. The ones who haven't been playing it for long and/or are freshmen who just came in from usually non-disciplined middle school have an excuse for their... interesting... tone quality. The others really do not. Personally, I think it would be awesome to have a whole tenor drums/mellophones/tenor sax feature, but... these sections are not exactly the virtuosi's of the band. It's sad for us tenor drums, though... we started out as quite possibly the best part of the percussion section and ended up perhaps only a bit above the cymbal line (one of them had his arm broken, so he just marched, one just has musical issues at the moment, and the other (squad leader), though he tried, couldn't save his section alone). Our feet and timing were our biggest problems... I just like wind playing that doesn't sound harsh, rattly, etc. I like resonant, tonal playing instead of squawks (significant difference from staccato). Quote

shar0na Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 Okay I'll be honest this time... clarinet and french horn are my picks.... Quote

Our head guy offered him many times to take his place, but Doc had said..Way too much stress. He is now gone working for some college in Austin. My opinion on the horn is still up. Quote
