Theberrytoner Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 A lot of great bands will be there. It's going to be exciting and amazing to watch. Quote

I keep checking the UIL website. For some odd reason, region 5 does not have its results listed, yet. It's kind of annoying, tbh. lol I would like to see what everyone's scores are because I'm making a big list of each conference, one region after another, just for kicks. haha Anyway, I know Richland and Haltom (and I'm sure LD Bell and many others) in region 5 received 1's. Anyone else know what the others in that region received? I keep checking and checking and nothing! Area B should be awesome this year, as usual. Lots and lots of bands participating. It's going to be quite the fight for State! Quote
Theberrytoner Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I know there are going to be a lot of really good shows. It's hard to even say who will make final 4. Who knows who might show up but it's going to blow some minds what these bands bring to the table. Who are your picks for this area ? Finals and the four? Quote

I would definitely put Wakeland, Centennial, Lake Ridge, Legacy, Newman Smith, Aledo, and Birdville in the finals but i can't yet tell who is going to be in those final four. trumpetlove11 1 Quote
Theberrytoner Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 All good bands, it all comes down to who wants it more. Quote
nicktheclarinetguy Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Wakeland will definitely make it, and I feel like Centennial will too. I think Lake Ridge can make it if they really want to, which I'm sure they do. nicktheclarinetguy 1 Quote
borchnork Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Finals for Area B were cancelled. They used prelims scores and the 4 bands advancing are 1. Lake Ridge 2. Newman Smith 3. Wakeland 4. Southwest This contest was insane. There was a 3 way tie for 3rd, and there was only a 6 point spread from 1st to 6th place. jmatthews 1 Quote
jmatthews Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Wow, I am really surprised that Centennial did not make it to state, especially considering they were the bronze medalist in 2011... Quote
borchnork Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Centennial was 6th. They were 1 point away from being 3rd place. Quote
Fata1 Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Congrats to all the bands who competed. I can only imagine how rough it must be to miss out with finals being cancelled. With that said, I'm really glad to see my old band back in state after missing it in 2011. Wish I could have been at the competition today. I can't believe how close the top 6 were. Quote
oagcplayer Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 How do they determine how to break the tie and have 2 advance and 1 not? Quote
borchnork Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) They base off of music scores to break ties Edited October 27, 2013 by Xenon This is not correct, see below. Quote
asdfgfdsa4 Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 Centennial did happen to draw first however, which most likely effected their performance considering the students had 3-5 hours of sleep. I feel that their finals performance could have been much stronger if it actually happened. Techfan741 1 Quote
Popular Post legendia1994 Posted October 27, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 27, 2013 Even though the Centennial Marching band did make third 2 years ago, Centennial band has gone through a lot. We don't know what the band situation is. For starters, they could have lost a lot of key players over the period of those two years. Another thing is that they also had a head director change, which could also be a factor. These are all just assumptions, but the musicians and the director have not been a constant factor. A fact is that Centennial was indeed running on little sleep due to the fact that they had a football game before area and they had to go first for area competition. So a second performance might have been a huge decider for them just as it did for them two years ago at State, how they ended up at 7th? and ended up in 3rd. So it is quite unfortunate, not just for them, but other bands that could have benefited from a second performance. These are just my opinions and assumptions asdfgfdsa4, Guardgirl27, Cgrad01 and 1 other 4 Quote

Through "judges' preference" which is done by taking the bands that are involved in the tie and taking their rank raw rankings to re-rank them amongst just those involved in the tie. With that re-ranking, they are re-totaled which determines how the tie is broken. So, if the following: BandA - 3, 4, 3, 5, 9 = 24 BandB - 4, 3, 4, 7, 6 = 24 This becomes: BandA - 1, 2, 1, 1, 2 = 7 BandB - 2, 1, 2, 2, 1 = 8 TXMarchingMadness87654 1 Quote

Popular Post Texas Band Member Posted October 27, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 27, 2013 Loved Lake Ridges show! Congrats to them on their first trip to state! I am so confused on why the judging was so out of whack. For example: Lake Ridge was given 1st in music twice and then 11th by the third judge. For marching they were given 1st by one judge and 9th by another. I definitely wish UIL would switch over to the point system to make the placement more definite and less confusing..... And less confusing..... The biggest surprises to me: Frisco Centennial - 6th Mansfield Legacy - 10th Aledo -11th asdfgfdsa4, trumpetlove11, Techfan741 and 1 other 4 Quote
Popular Post bandnerd2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 27, 2013 I must say that after watching the bands today, Lake Ridge's victory was well deserved. I don't know what the directors are feeding the kids, but GOSH! What a show!!!! Theberrytoner, brandonxd and aduvall 3 Quote
Theberrytoner Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Really enjoyed the competition today and I feel amazing after announcements were made . Sorry for the bands that didn't make , everyone put in a top notch effort and in the end we all did well. I want to congratulate all the bands that competed today in outstanding performances and I am super excited to head to state this year with my band . I look forward to seeing what area b is bringing to state cause it's going to be wild. DPerez 1 Quote
trumpetlove11 Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Yea I don't understand how lakeridge got first. But I'm proud of them! Quote
TX_Band Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 It's too bad that finals in Area B were cancelled. Would have been interesting to see how things would have changed because I'm thinking they would have. Ordinals from prelims were all over the place to put it mildly. Top 5 ordinals scores ranges from a 23 to a 28. Just some crazy ordinals. UIL needs to do something about their outdated judging system. Weird things happening in all areas across the state.... Congrats to all those advancing on and good luck at state!! Texas Band Member and clarinetsrock 2 Quote
