sax_player_pride Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Wow. This area B competition was just simply amazing. Really proud of all the bands going to state. Just shows how much hard work and passion it takes to be rewarded clarinetsrock 1 Quote
Popular Post sike846 Posted October 28, 2013 Popular Post Posted October 28, 2013 Official results are up, as you can see here the judging is all over the place. legendia1994, Bandnerd12 and clarinetsrock 3 Quote
BandIzCool Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Its obvious some judges are not quite enjoying the Lake Ridge show like the other judges were. Hmmm clarinetsrock and Theberrytoner 2 Quote
clarinetsrock Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I noticed that too... that's quite a discrepancy between judges 1 & 2 and judge 3 and between judge 4 and 5. Things that make you go hmmm.... Quote
Fata1 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Interestingly, if you were to remove the non-finalists and re-rank the bands as if there were only ten, Wakeland would actually be out and Liberty would be in. Quote
Guardgirl27 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I would have been interesting to see how finals would have changed things. Centennial, historically, does much better in finals then prelims. Will be a shame not seeing them at state this year. Quote

TX_Band Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Everyone had weird ordinals. Wakeland for example had a 11,2,2 in music. Give them a 4 or 5 instead of an 11 and they would have been in 1st. Lake Ridge benefited from going on last in prelims. In fact many bands that went on after the lunch break benefited. Bandnerd12 1 Quote
legendia1994 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Holy cow lol!!!!! The judging lol! The judges score are usually within 1-2 points of each other and usually the top ranked bands have really low scores (one digit), but I guess not! I guess there was not much consensus in judging this year >< Quote
skippy mcdougal Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 How is it possible that the judges could be so far out of whack regarding a band? As a Lake Ridge supporter I am obviously overjoyed with the results, but the scoring makes no sense. Lake Ridge gets 2 1st places in music then a 9th from the other judge? Then the marching is a 1st and an 11th? Wakeland gets 2 2nd's in music then an 11th from judge 3? Centennial Frisco's music scores are 10, 10, 3? Little Elm, 13, 11, 4? Aledo 4, 11, 12? How could the judges be so out of whack on these scores? I can understand a differene of a few places but it is as if the judges liked certain styles of music and disliked others. I am so confused on why the judging was so out of whack. For example: Lake Ridge was given 1st in music twice and then 11th by the third judge. For marching they were given 1st by one judge and 9th by another. I definitely wish UIL would switch over to the point system to make the placement more definite and less confusing..... And less confusing..... The biggest surprises to me: Frisco Centennial - 6th Mansfield Legacy - 10th Aledo -11th I would add that these bands all had to preform in the first block Quote
444457 Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 What a great contest! I was certainly impressed by the bands and definitely have some new favorites. Wakeland never ceases to impress and I couldn’t help but to admire all the beautiful sounds and clean marching. Thoroughly enjoyed this show and I wish them the best of luck on Tuesday. One band that I was pleasantly surprised with, and most of the crowd it seemed as well, was the Lake Ridge band. A very interesting and entertaining show that definitely caught and captivated the crowd as, basically, a whole. What a fast paced, high energy show with interesting arrangements of The Rite of Spring, Holst as well as music featured from signs. I’m intrigued to see how the 2nd year school places in the state contest against all the big boys, but I feel as if they will leave an impression. Best of luck to all bands advancing! Quote
Max Phillips Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 It seems the only scores that weren't out of wack were from Newman Smith. Did anybody see their show? Quote
TX_Band Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 These are the latest videos I could find of each of the bands advancing to state from Area B. If anyone can find more recent videos feel free to post them. Newman Smith Lake Ridge Wakeland http://youtu.be/9nOPbA85ckE Southwest Quote
TXMarchingMadness87654 Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 I want to send all the bands the very best wishes on the upcoming state contest. When I saw Southwest at the BISD festival back at the beginning of October, I picked them to win their division and they did! I actually teared up a bit, feeling excited for them. Weird, maybe, but I felt very proud of them! They have a great show and sound just terrific! It doesn't surprise me at all that they are headed to State. I haven't seen Newman Smith or Lake Ridge live. I did see Wakeland at Mansfield and their show is great! Their colorguard....wow! Bands have kicked it up a notch this year. Good for them!! Quote

sike846 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Here is a better performance of Newman Smith's show, that Midlothian one was... less than spectacular. Quote
Max Phillips Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Smith placed fourth at Midlothian after previously winning in 2011. It was no where near their clean runs. Quote
bingogooberman Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 they're looking and sounding pretty great, and the drumline just keeps getting better and better. pretty impressive considering they've gone under major staff changes (they've had a different head band director at each of their state appearances, and nobody on this staff was there when they got 6th back in 09). proud of my alma mater. Anybody think they've got an outside chance at finals? Mclovin and T.Stechnij 2 Quote
DLineTenor Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I got to see Newmon Smith's show and would not be suprised to see them 9th or 10th in Sam Antonio. Josephle2014 1 Quote
