1. The Woodlands

2. Friendswood
3. Spring

4. Dawson

5. Clear Lake

6. Brazoswood

7. Pearland

Friendswood and Dawson will knock out Dickinson and Clear Brook, in my humble opinion. This is obviously an absurdly early prediction. Also, it's always a mystery how many bands will advance from Area F.

What is the rule for how many can go? I'm seeing 43 bands in the performance draw.

A Performance Draw list is a list of ALL of the bands that could possibly perform at Area if they all made 1's. You then take the list and remove all of the bands that did not make a 1. The resulting list is the performance order for the competition and would very likely no longer have 43 bands.

The rule for how many advance to State is 1 State Advancer for every 5 bands participating in Prelims. 5A/6A minimum of 2 Advancers; 1A-4A minimum of 3 Advancers.

Starting in 2015, the rule is being changed to count the number of bands that qualified to go to Area (earned a Division-I) instead of participating in Area.

I think you're looking at the draw order, not the eligible bands. You have to go to http://www.txbands.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6437-2014-uil-region-results/ to see the results from the Regions. As of this afternoon, Area F looks like this:

F - Region 9, Region 10(1), Region 17(11), Region 19(10)

The numbers in parentheses are the number of schools from each region who received 1s at Region.

So far there are 22 schools eligible for Area - add up all the parentheses. If no schools from Region 9 qualified, only four schools would go to state from this Area (22 / 5 = 4 with some remainder, = 4 schools). If I read the Region 9 website correctly, there are only 12 bands competing on Tuesday for their Regional. If all 12 bands from Region 9 made 1s and chose to compete at Area, that would only leave six schools from this Area (34 / 5 = 6 with some remainder, = 6 schools).

As someone rooting for Clear Lake, the math is deeply disappointing. xsad.png.pagespeed.ic.nW56hUVS2R.png The addition of Friendswood and Dawson was a double-whammy.

UPDATE: obviously I also missed the subtlety the two band minimum. I'm a lot more optimistic about Clear Lake squeezing into 7th than 6th. Bring on Saturday!

Thank you both for the explanation! NASA Bandman, I wouldn't count out Clear Lake yet. I forgot to mention in my predictions earlier in the thread that I like Clear Lake also.

The Woodlands

Spring

College Park

Brazoswood

Friendswood

Pearland

Bubble:  Dickinson, Clear Lake, Dawson

Clear Lake has been an honor band finalist and advanced to state the last go around.  Dawson was a 4A marching finalist last year.  Both have had staff turnover since their last trip to state though.  This will be a very tight contest!

Brazoswood is having a very good year and have a great show, with clean playing and marching. College Park is also having a really great year. I think either have a chance to make finals at state. Both bands looked great at BOA. Although I think Spring is very strong I'm always surprised by their placement. Woodlands is strong as usual, but not quite up to last year- But I'm sure will be top 5 at State. Many very good bands in this area. Im amazed at the number of bands that perform at such a high level. Kudos to all the kids and teachers!

I think you just named 9 of the 10 finalists.

I was at the contest. A little bit surprised by B-wood and College Park not making it to state, but it is what it is. Also surprised The Woodlands didn't come out on top. I think their show is absolutely fabulous. Maybe the Radiohead and the props were a bit much for some of the older members of the audience... ahem... Anyway, great jobs by all! Congratulations to Friendswood. It was an awesome show!

What was it about Friendswood that the judges preferred over The Woodlands?
