LKendrick Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I do these after every regional, thought I'd share considering how dang crazy this one was. The recap from prelims is all over the place. For instance, Waxahachie was 2nd overall in Visual Individual and 22nd in Ensemble. From 6th - 6th there's 3 points seperating several bands. 1 judge could basically kill you or get you all the way up to 6th. Wakeland was consistently around 10th across the board in prelims, but since they were consistent and weren't really low in any particular caption, they ended up in 6th. The top 5 are the only ones not all over the place. Finals was a little more tame, the GE judges agreed on just about everything. Recaps are very interesting if you're a numbers person. That spread from 6th - 16th is insane: 6th - Wakeland - 77.57th - Aledo - 77.18th - Mansfield - 77.09th - LV Berkner - 76.910th - Richland - 76.1511th - James Martin - 76.0512th - Keller Central - 76.013th - Legacy - 75.4514th - Keller - 75.415th - Haltom - 74.916th - Waxahachie - 74.25 I listed the placement in each caption, numbers doubled in a column equal a tie. Xenon Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Also of note, 11 of the 24 bands received penalties in Prelims. 3 of 10 in Finals. Quote
LKendrick Posted October 5, 2014 Author Posted October 5, 2014 Yup, Liberty would have been over Lewisville without theirs if Lewisville still had theirs, Keller would have been over Legacy without theirs, Martin's kept them out of finals. In finals no placements would have changed, but still quite a few penalties. Quote
Statebound Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Any thoughts about where the penalties may have come from? I noticed that Marcus had a penalty in finals. Quote
Xenon Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 A lot of them are likely timing related. Entering early, show too short, show too long, etc. Another possibility is something like non-badged helpers on the field for things like pit setup. Quote
bandnerd30456 Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Wow, Martin was 10th in individual visual; 24th in ensemble... Quote
bancl Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 The visual scores in particular were not an accurate representation of what was actually happening on the field. Notice that later in the day the numbers got much higher. While there were some great bands later on, some groups that were CLEARLY cleaner than others had much lower Visual scores (particularly individual) than the later groups. Call it numbers management or whatever you want. Quote
bancl Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Examples - Berkner 18th, Richland 21st, Keller 17th. All of those bands were much better individually than those placements indicate. azn 1 Quote
Smuffin Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Sheesh that vis judge is probably what opened the spread between Coppell and Bell in finals. Quote

Prelims Recap Breakdown: Finals Recap Breakdown: i do the same - both with prelim and finals scores - last years SR in San Antonio is the worst one to look at - if you follow the judge for the variances it gets very interesting. as big as marching band is in Texas, you would think they would ensure that no judge with Texas ties be allowed to judge in the state Quote
