snares Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 My predictions will be 1) marcus 2)bowie 3) hebron UIL rewards musical acheivement more than bla in the sense that there's no GE and that music is 3/5 of the score. CTJ has a very in your face show but I think it is a little more suited for boa. I think they could possibly swap places wth hebron, but hebron still has som much control and beauty. Their music is also extremely hard, and they can rock it. Marcus is too clean that I don't think anyone will touch them unless hebron or bowie take music 1's, which is very possible. Like Hebron "tied" marcus at area, but that's only really because one judge had Plano east ahead of them. Maybe he saw a completely different show than I did but that was a suprise. For me it just depends on what that 3rd music judge gives bowie/hebron. I also think that if marcus takes a 1 in music, it's their show for taking. I'm probably completely wrong considering I had Hebron and TW as my top two at BOA. But we will see. Quote

Yeah... there's not much to say except: In all seriousness though, despite a few of those INSANE results, the judges also did a very good job in quite a few other areas. Hats off to them, state prelims sure isn't easy to judge. HighToes 1 Quote

~ME~ Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Anyways, congrats to Keller, Flower Mound, and Duncanville on making finals! It was really cool seeing Keller slip in as a dark horse, Duncanville return as a UIL powerhouse after their absence in the 2012 finals, and Flower Mound making their first state finals. That has got to be especially huge for those three groups. They should be very proud! Quote
lovemarchigband Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 So are the first 3 music and the last 2 scores marching? Quote

lovemarchigband Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 So how can you get 1 for marching when a kid fell? Does that not count? Just curious. Quote

Someone falling isn't as big of a deal as it might seem. Overall difficulty of the drill, cleanliness of the sets, and individual marching technique is much more important. Quote
Donezo Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 28th is low, but I could see justification for putting Johnson out of the top 10 in marching. It was a sloppy run this morning. I don't think the visual execution was 6A state finals level. They sounded great though. Quote
principalagent Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Agh! Third 4th place in a row for Bowie, although they have nothing to feel bad about. They still put on aa spectacular show with a UIL placement that's nothing to scoff at, along with their highest BOA San Antonio placement ever this weekend. There's always 2016! guardgirl17 1 Quote
Popular Post LKendrick Posted November 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2014 What a year for Johnson. 1st at Conroe, 1st at San Antonio, and 3rd at state, wow! They're a new powerhouse, I can't wait for them to go back to nationals. Hebron was close! Those visual scores sure flipped from prelims. Marcus, that's 9 years you've been the reigning champion, and in this state, that's absolutely incredible, congratulations! guardgirl17, principalagent, ~ME~ and 3 others 6 Quote
itsstephenyo Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 So is it about that time we start analyzing prelims results and how they're completely whacked out? CTJ with a 28th in visual, Hebron with a 12th and 2 1s (lol this one is the funniest to me, btw. One judge was just not having it), Dawson with a 25/2 in visual, Harlingen with 29/4, Pearland with 27/21/6 in music, TW with 11/3 in music... etc Here we go again! Quote
Popular Post ~ME~ Posted November 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2014 Gee... 5 State Titles in a row... I think Marcus has set a record that very well may never be broken. When it came to marching and playing, they were way ahead of their time back in 2006, and even now when other bands have finally begun to catch up, they are still good enough to win. Congrats to them! There have been many amazing Texas powerhouses such as Westfield, Spring, Bell, and Reagan, but in my books Marcus is the single greatest band program in the history of Texas marching band. It's been amazing watching them throughout the years. Now I'm already curious to see if they'll walk away with number 6 two years from now... 2nd UIL State silver medal in a row for Hebron, and a well deserved one. This program has truly come into their own these past few years (like many other programs recently). I was super impressed with the insane technicality of their music and how incredible they sounded playing it all year, and I'm glad to see that pay off for them. Now that this year has wrapped up for them, I'm super interested in what they have in store for next year. I'm desperately hoping that they'll FINALLY make their debut at Grand Nationals that has been long overdue. Heck, maybe they'll become the first band in BOA history to bring home the eagle on their first Grand Nats appearance. That would be something. Talk about a group that has come into their own, CTJ has just been killing it all season. The first place finish at BOA San Antonio isn't what I found most surprising about them this year (that was going to happen eventually), it's actually this medal at UIL that really surprised me and made me realize just how good this band is getting. It's one thing to just be good at BOA only or vise versa, but being successful at both BOA and UIL is a sign of a truly well rounded program. I think that's the biggest thing CTJ proved this year: that they're more than just a BOA powerhouse. Like Hebron, I really hope these guys make a trip to Indy next season as well. They would likely have a very, VERY good shot at the eagle as well. Fingers crossed! Bowie was fantastic this year. They were such a well-balanced group musically and visually. I really wanted them to finally get a medal this year, and they more than deserved it. If they keep being as incredible has they have been, they'll get a medal eventually for sure. This was such a great contest. It was awesome to see some new bands in Keller and Flower Mound (who is going to kick butt at Nationals), as well as astrong return to finals by Duncanville. Reagan (congrats to them on their well-deserved 5th place finish, by the way), The Woodlands, and Coppell were ALL fantastic as well. Seriously, these San Antonio contests just get better every year. What an awesome end to the season in Texas. I look forward to Flower Mound and Wakeland going up to Indy to represent Texas at Grand Nationals. Good luck to them! whitewing09, knoxisawesome348, satxbandfan and 3 others 6 Quote
5 te 6 Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 WOW... Finals composite scores were REALLY close... Marcus 10, Hebron 12. Any closer and it would have been a tie! Quote
Popular Post knoxisawesome348 Posted November 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2014 I think a big congrats is definitely due to Reagan. They fell on some hard times during the school split in the 07-09 years and their 5th place finish is a testament to how incredibly well their program has bounced back. They might not be quite on the same level as they were 03-05 in BOA competitions, but this ties with their highest finish at UIL state finals (they were also 5th in 2006). Glad to see their program at the top again. Xenon, 5 te 6, principalagent and 3 others 6 Quote

From a total show package, I think this is my 3rd favorite Reagan show, behind only 2003 and 2005. And as good as Reagan sounded in 2005, I do think that this year's Reagan has the best sound quality I have ever heard from them, even if not the same level of design package. 5 te 6 1 Quote
