That was score order per the uil website.

Would you care to share a link to the scores from prelims?  Cannot seem to find them.

Yep...that was rank order in prelims for Area D. As a side note, L.D. Bell came up a spot short as an alternate in their area after everything was said and done...so no telling what the results wll be for Area D finals tonight.

Well when you have all those bands spread out through the entire day in prelims in no particular order versus closer together in finals, it happens.  Happens all the time, especially if it's close.  BOA, UIL, WBA, ect.

actually the only real shock is Westwood going instead of Round Rock. honestly watching them both today I felt that Westwood had the better run

This doesn't necessarily have to do with the judging at this contest (obviously I wasn't there), but one thing I like about BOA is that if the judges put a group in 1st that I wouldn't have put in first place myself, the group that's named the champion is almost always a close-second in my mind. I can't say the same for UIL judging. Frankly, I gave up on making sense of UIL judging a long time ago. I will probably never go 8 out of 10 at placement predictions at a UIL contest like I did at BOA Conroe last year. It's just too inconsistent. The ordinal system is also just flat-out antediluvian. Anyway, sorry. I know this happens just about every year when UIL rolls around.

Hopefully LD BELL and RR will vindicate and validate themselves at BOA

They probably will. BOA SA is more of a State Contest than UIL State is anyway. At the very least, all class sizes compete against each other, and, like UIL, it typically attracts the very best in the state.

Finally got to see Bowie, and wow did they deserve that win! I'd predict them to take visual at BOA, seriously good marching. unfortunately my school couldn't join them, but I'm glad the results were accurate.

The finals rankings seem pretty accurate to me based on what I've seen. Bowie is performing their show at a very high level. I wonder what cost them 1st place in prelims.

Early run with sun in their eyes is what I was told.   Number 2 is a rough position.

It was most likely a combination of the sun being in their eyes and the fact that it's really hard to have the same level of energy that early in the morning as you would in the afternoon. I feel like that might have also been what kept Round Rock out of it back in 2012... but who knows. UIL Judging is usually (for the most part) inconsistent anyways. I'm sad to see Round Rock not move on though.. I really liked their show! But I'm no UIL judge  :(

I feel bad for Hendrickson..... How in the world can you go in top billing and then fall off the map! Those kids went in thinking " we got a shot at this - we are going in at the top" Holy crap....how does that happen. Scores all over the place shows how much a subjective opinion can make or break a band - there is too much liberty in UIL judging. When there is one judge who is so off of all the other judges , one has to ask " what was he watching" - I wish someone would make it their plight to get this scoring changed so that it becomes more consistent or at the very least start throwing out the low and high score.

With that being said, I think it's great for those bands who rarely have the chance to make finals in a BOA scoring - how great for them to have that feeling that all their hard work finally paid off. Everyone should get to have that moment. The other bands will survive and go onto BOA to once again be at the top where they are and should be.

Aha. Different panels in prelims and finals. I have been scratching my head for the past 12 hours trying to figure out what happened to Hendrickson! It is still pretty mystifying, but this is a tough, tough area. I don't envy the judges who had to make that call. All ten of those bands would probably do very well at State. You'd have to think that Round Rock and Hendrickson would at least be on the bubble for State finals.

I don't think it's the UIL judging system that is as bad as the judges themselves. Judges who obviously put other aspects into their judging other than how well it was performed (and personally I feel like difficulty should be a small factor) should be under a list of people who can't judge UIL period. There are judges in UIL that very obviously love the idea of incorporating a theme and using props with your show, well news flash guys, not every band does that. Some just march and play the heck out of their show, others use visual aspects to help their GE and Visual scores in BOA and other competitions.

A 4 spot difference in a bands placement is the border of normal and suspicious, 5 and higher is just crazy at that point. You could argue that the judge might have noticed different things which could be possible, but once it's practically every other band they're definitely not fit to judge UIL.
