2014 BOA San Antonio Recap

Recommended Posts

Gonna have to disagree Abbie123. Classiest individuals on the planet= Marcus boosters and parents. ALWAYS supporting every band on the field, so polite, and so excellent. At BOA San Antonio taking middle placements like champions and at State Finals taking Championships like the humblest people you will ever meet, Marcus exudes class in everything they do. This I suspect is their secret to a decade of excellence.

As for LISD in general, the district decided to expand Leander (capacity ~2600 from ~1800) instead of opening a new high school in the northwest corner of the district, so Leander should be back in 6A soon. Cedar Park and Vandegrift are more or less built out (CP much more so), and should stay in 5A for the time being. Vista Ridge and Rouse would be projected to grow more because of huge housing complexes going up between Leander/Cedar Park and Round Rock/Georgetown, but High School #6 is instead going to open in the far eastern side of the district, which should take Rouse back down to 5A and keep Vista Ridge there.

(Late post, but I felt like I had to point this out)

Vandegrift is actually still growing (the school enrollment is currently at 2,062), though by looking at the breakdown of the middle school grades that feed into Vandegrift, it appears the growth is slowing and, therefore, the student enrollment at VHS won't exceed ~2400.

Even though Vandegrift is at ~2000 kids, I still believe that Vandegrift will be 6A by the time the next UIL realignment rolls around.

For now, they're going to be one big 5A school.

Also, random fun fact - High School #6 now has a name: Tom Glenn High School

For anybody looking for all the Leander ISD schools to mpve up to 6A, it won't happen any time soon.

As mentioned above, the district's 6th high school is set to open in 2016 - Tom Glenn HS. As part of the planning for attendance zone changes, the district has already identified the site for HS #7 and estimate it to open approximately 2023.

Rouse will probably drop back to 5A in the next realignment with Vandegrift likely moving up to 6A and staying there for good. Rouse, Leander, CP and Vista should stay in 5A for at least next year's realignment, with Rouse and Vista possibly moving up to 6A in the 2018 realignment.

I did some digging around on the internet and calculations to produce some enrollment figures for the LISD schools.

I used campus improvement plans (which have enrollment numbers listed by grade) and estimated off of the current school feeder pattern to create the 2015-2016 school year figures.

I also looked up data provided by LISD regarding school enrollment estimations for the 2016-17 school year.

The UIL determines a school's classification using the enrollment figures from the previous school year, such that, for the 2016 realigment, the 2015-2016 enrollment of a school will determine their classification for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years and their classification will not change in the period between realignments if the student population grows.

And while the UIL will probably adjust the 6A classification cutoff of 2100, historically the UIL has only made tiny adjustments to cutoffs (usually adding or subtracting 5 to 10).

Vandegrift:

- 2015-16: ~2278 (6A)

- 2016-17: ~2426 (6A)

Rouse:

- 2015-16: ~2473 (6A)

- 2016-17: ~2296 (6A)

Vista Ridge:

- 2015-16: ~2275 (6A)

- 2016-17: ~2305 (6A)

Cedar Park:

- 2015-16: ~1925 (5A)

- 2016-17: ~1846 (5A)

Leander:

- 2015-16: ~2215 (6A)

- 2016-17: ~2098 (technically 5A under the current cutoff, but the reclassification is determined by the previous year's enrollment, so Leander would still be 6A)

All of the above enrollment figures are estimates and may flucuate slightly.

So really Rouse should stay 6A for the time being. Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, and Leander will move up to 6A for now, and only Cedar Park will stay 5A.

Thanks for the update! While of course the goal of the district is the keep these schools as even as possible, the marching world is better off with them mixing up between 5A and 6A. While I am of course looking forward to the LISD showdown, part 2 at state this year (I'd be more shocked if LISD DIDN'T sweep this year)...It would be nicer for all these groups to have their chance to shine. At this point they're crowding themselves out of medal contention, and heck, even out of advancing to state. Having a few 5A and few 6A allows a little more room for these bands to succeed.

Side note - what's the over/under on the number of years it takes for the new LISD school to be a state finalist? I'll take the under in any case!

Cedar Park was established I think in 1998 and won in 2001. Vista Ridge was established in 2003 and made finals in 2007. Vandegrift established in 2009 and finals in 2011 (and dangerously close to state in 2009 - first alternate). Of course, Leander is much older - 1899 - so it took a while. Rouse was established in 2008, but hasn't made it to state yet.

Looks like about three or so years.

On a side note, Leander has an IB magnet that upticks its numbers a not insignificant bit from the projected campus plans.

It will be interesting to see if Glenn high school can build itself up like Cedar Park and Vandegrift did in their early years.
