I know this isn't pertaining to the topic of this forum, but where's the best place to sit in the Alamodome? This will be my first time attending and not oerforming. I want the best view I can possibly get! Is first "deck" at the top a good spot? Or should I go up even higher?

Whoops, I meant BOA Conroe, not Houston. Sorry!

I still call it BOA Houston. It's a Houston area regional and it was called that back when it was held in Pearland...

The stadium is not technically in Conroe, it's in Shenandoah, which was swallowed up by the Woodlands...though calling it "BOA The Woodlands" just sounds awkward.  Students in Shenandoah attend the Woodlands: College Park and Oak Ridge HS, which are also both in the Woodlands, but are apart of Conroe ISD, which is HQ'd in Conroe, Tx who also owns the stadium.

So to be outside the confusion I just call it BOA Houston.

I'm not going to try and make placement predictions just yet. I may need a week or two of thinking about it to get a list I'm happy with, but here is a few ideas I have of what may happen.

Top 10 (no order)

Hebron

Flower Mound

Reagan

CTJ

Leander

Cedar Park

James Bowie

Marcus

TWHS

Round Rock

I'm pretty confident in these 10 being the best right now. However there are definitely bands that can rise up the ranks. If I had to choose a top 5, it would probably be:

(No order)

Reagan

James Bowie

Hebron

CTJ

Flower Mound

Reagan - I've only been to BOA Austin, but winning Conroe and TMC is no joke. From what I've seen/heard Reagan's coming back HUGE, right now they're probably my favorite to win this competition.

Bowie - After seeing them in Austin I knew they weren't up to their usual level of performance, however I saw a MUCH harder book than they've attempted before, and a huge amount of potential GE. (Which is probably why they won GE, despite coming in 4th overall). After their apparent progress they made between BOA Austin and TMC, I think they can definitely pull together an amazing show for San Antonio, and maybe win the whole thing.

Hebron - This may seem optimistic, but I think Hebron can win San Antonio AND Grand Nats this year, however due to them having a longer season they may not quite peak at San Antonio, regardless, I think they are a favorite to medal at this competition. I'm super excited to see what they do these next coming weeks, and I hope they will take the Eagle home to Texas this year.

CTJ - It's hard to not put CTJ in the top 5 after last year's performance. I don't think being behind Reagan at Conroe really shows much of a downside for them, as Reagan are simply amazing this year. CTJ always puts a insane book on the field, and performs it super well. I can't wait to see this year's show in the dome.

Flower Mound - I couldn't leave FloMo out after Arlington. As long as they haven't peaked early I definitely see them coming strong into this competition. Their GE is ridiculous and that will do them very well in BOA.

Of course I don't think this top 5 is that secure at all.  Marcus/The Woodlands/Leander/Round Rock/Cedar Park are not necessarily "worse" than the other bands I posted about, I just couldn't make solid decisions based on what I've seen so far.  ;)

Its going to be a tough super regional for sure this year. But holy cow, Flower Mound winning BOA Arlington. I finally got to see their show in finals and was completely blown away. I immediately saw why they won in Prelims, Finals, and took so many captions. Flower Mound is steadily rising to the top, and is definitely a band to be watching out for at San Antonio. Their GE is absolutely ridiculous, visual is impressively clean for this early in the season, and their music...you've just got to hear it live to believe it.

It's amazing what a trip to Grand Nats can do for a band. Their skills confidence have definitely improved.

I would say the same for Wakeland.

I remember 4 years ago we were the first band to go on Saturday and we had to be at school at 3 am. Our performance time was 7:15 or somehting like that.  It's not fun at all. I feel really bad for Bowie... being the first band to go is pretty rough.

That's true, but Vandegrift is a high caliber band, I'd say it would be hard to forget about them. The worst I could see happening is them getting a lower score in prelims, but they could definitley catch up in finals

But Vandegrift is early in the overall line up. They could get lost in the shuffle easily. However, they'll be fine, I'm sure.

'Twas what I meant by early. :)

Yep, it happens to everyone eventually. It can be even worse with competitons that are outdoors this time of year. I have seen outdoor competitions where the first bands have to play in temps in the low 40's in the morning and the ones in the afternoon playing in the upper 70's or low 80's when it's perfect. Being first and playing in the cold make it very difficult make the best impression in an all-day prelim. At least SA is an indoor competition which helps alot. Not ideal for the first bands, but better.

Yeah those early Saturday performance times are tough for bands not in the greater SA area.

I remember in 2013 FloMo had the 8:00 am time.  This was the Saturday after the Mound Showdown (FMHS vs Marcus football game).  Flower Mound won the game in the third OT.  The game didn't end until after midnight and that pushed all the departure times back.  After the game the students and support parents had to quickly go get their luggage, return to the school, eat, load the buses, then drive the six plus hours (by bus) to SA.  That was not a fun trip.

In 2005, Marcus was the first band to perform on Saturday at something like 6:30am.

This was their bird show (Fowl Play), and the birds in the stadium were chirping up a storm as the preshow bird calls were playing in the pit.

Yikes! I hope it's not like that for them this time.

If we use hornrank.com's current ranking for this week and transpose it to the participating bands at SA, this would be the finalists in this order:

Ronald Reagan HS
Hebron HS
Flower Mound HS
Claudia Taylor Johnson HS
Leander HS
The Woodlands HS
Marcus HS
Cedar Park HS
James Bowie HS
Round Rock HS
Vandegrift HS
LD Bell HS
Cedar Ridge HS
Owasso HS

I wonder how close to the actual result this would be? I'm having more difficulty making a guess as to who will likely make the finals than any other year, ever. I can't even begin to speculate who will come out first or even the top 3 as this could be any of maybe 8 or so of these bands. I think we have way more finalist-worthy bands than spots this year than any other year since this competition started. This is going to be one crazy contest!

As many issues as I have with Hornrank, I think this is pretty accurate at this point.

Just to note: Bell won't be at San Antonio. Wakeland fits nicely in their place.

Duh, knew that about LD Bell and spaced it off. Agreed about Wakeland. They did really well at Arlington.

The best place to sit is in the press box ;)

I knew the year would finally come when FloMo had a show that was honestly better than big brother Marcus but this one has a chance. Based on the couple shows that I've seen, I still believe that Marcus will beat them in music in San Antonio but FloMo has them dominated in GE and that carries much more weight. This is my favorite FloMo show since Paris.

I've tried not to like Hebron this year but based on what I saw at TOC and Arlington, everyone needs to be worried about them unless TW, CTJ or Reagan has something to say about it. Hebron only played 5-6 minutes of their show at both of those contests and still haven't put their closer on the field. Yet they only lost by one tenth of a point at BOA Arlington against a full FloMo show. The Hebron ballad has been talked to death, but it is really good and their closer's are usually insanely hard and fast.

There are a lot of wild cards this year. These last few weeks are going to be really fun.

I've honestly never even heard of Owasso until this year. Is this a relatively new emerging band doing really well this year? I know they existed before, but i've seen a lot of people talking about them this year specifically. I really want to watch their show now, and see why people are talking so highly of them. (absolutely no disrespect to them intended).

EDIT 1: Oh, they're from Oklahoma, no wonder I didn't know about them...

EDIT 2: OK last post about Owasso, but I watched their show and their first
movement has the same music as Westlake's 2nd movement! I think that's
pretty coincidental!

Quite honestly I think an incomplete show can actually be more competitive than a complete show.  Think about it, Band A spends 50 hours putting 8 minutes on the field, Band B spends 50 hours putting 6 1/2 minutes on the field.....which do you think is going to look and sound cleaner?  The incomplete show might lose GE points if intended effects are lost without all the missing pieces in place, but if the show is designed to be performed in smaller iterations of the final product (ie. creating special "tag endings" that can be tacked on to the end of the incomplete show to give it a completed feel) the shorter show will look more polished and function as a completed project of its own.
