Nny14 Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Way to go Cedar Park! And I was not trying to bash Carmels win. They were actually my favorite of the top 6, I really wasn't feeling Avon personally. Congrats on #3! It seems every time Carmel wins it's met with some sort of controversy XD Quote

After being 2nd last year, and then to win semis and come as close as they could get, just heartbreaking. However, they are still a young program. Can't wait for them to come with a vengeance next year! Quote
Mellorips Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Weird coincidence that everytime Carmel has won they have been part of controversy for winning and Reagan has been in attendance for all of their wins. Quote
Nny14 Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Carmel won prelims. Cedar Park did drastically better overtime. Calling it now, William Mason will get 2nd next year. Quote

Mellorips Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Also this makes me question the validity of the SA results. I find it hard to believe that CP went from being 3 points behind Leander to being 1.35 ahead of them in a week. That is a about a 4.55 point shift in a spread from one week to the other. Quote

Popular Post akinez Posted November 13, 2016 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2016 What a day! It's been unbelievable. Really. Everything these past couple of days has been unreal. Here are some very quick last minute thoughts I wanted to share.. #TeamTexas was incredibly strong from Whitesboro all the way to Cedar Park. Were there surprises? Yes. Do we wish that the Eagle would be flying south this year? Oh heck yes. Even though we did not place as high as we wanted to, we are just incredibly grateful to have this experience that not too many bands are able to have. The fact that four of the thirteen finalists were from Texas says a lot about our state (When was the last time four bands from Texas made BOA GN Finals?), and I'm glad we were able to rep Texas. We showed everyone the standard of Texas marching bands - a standard that rises every year. And it can only get better from here. Huge congratulations to Cedar Park for placing the highest out of all Texas bands. Winning is great and all, but it is the experience and what you take away from it that truly helps push a band to the next level. Next year being my final season with the Johnson Band, I cannot wait to see where this band goes from here, as well as all the other Texas bands. Thank you everyone for all the kind and encouraging comments about our show. It was extremely fun to perform. May we come back stronger and better than ever next year! crossblue82 Posted November 13, 2016 Author Posted November 13, 2016 I really don't understand some of this scoring and im not trying to be bitter. It looks like Leander's separation from other top contenders in finals was a much lower GE score. So musically and visually they stood up well but got outscored a lot there? I guess if anything I would've believed the opposite. Avon and Carmel scores very high as well when despite a great field I didn't see that there was any one band that deserved that high. Congratulations to all bands I'm just kind of miffed about a lot of these top 6 placements and scores. Too many to list them all really and too tired to do so. I feel for Avon, that's a tough way to go down... Quote
Mellorips Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Why not just make the tie-breaker who got the higher placement from the most judges? Quote

Popular Post principalagent Posted November 13, 2016 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2016 Four bands from Texas made finals last year as well. And Leander has so much to be proud of! I had them higher too, but the entire top 6 was amazing. I stuck around to listen to Carmel's encore and already started warming up to their show. They definitely "kept it simple, stupid" in terms of theme, but their music is deceptively difficult and it's probably the best arranged slow-fast show I've ever heard. They also have a top notch design team which assuredly led to their critical GE win. They seem to only win questionably, but I'm personally not going to question it. Now after going to BOA SA all day last Saturday, 6A State finals, and all 3 days of GN, I'm not even going to listen to a show for about a week and a half. I'm burned out. Huge congrats to #TeamTexas for keeping the standard of excellence so high and continuing to show the nation how great band is in Texas! Nny14, FloMoParent and Anthony V 3 Quote
snares Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 This might be the dumbest Grand Nationals I've ever seen, mostly because of the grand champion. Carmel is fantastic. But how in the world can you give the music and visual caption, the more skillful captions to Avon and NOT have them win? They just proved that they were better than Carmel! Carmel won because they had a better show design. That frustrates the heck out of me Quote
Nny14 Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 But Carmel couldn't have won if they didn't keep up with Avon in captions. And considering Carmel beat Broken Arrow with a caption that weighed even less, I wouldn't say Avon was automatically "better". GE is incorporated so bands do their best to be creative and innovative every year. It keeps the activity fun and entertaining. And Lord knows how hard it is to strike lighting in a bottle and make a championship show, but thats what Carmel did (albeit I think Flower Mound struck better) I guess I can't speak without bias, as I really did not enjoy Avons show but to each his own. I think that was the year Carmel won, except basically every fan not from Indiana thought Broken Arrow should've won because either the ME or MI judge hijacked the score table with an unorthodox deeper spread...In other words, they increased the value/weight of their caption by widening the breadth of points top to bottom while ranking BA uncharacteristically low at the same time. It dropped their score by something like half a point lower than what most people assumed it should've been, which, with how the close it was between 1st and 2nd, ended up costing BA the Eagle. I still forget that Carmel actually won that year....I had to remind myself when typing this that BA didn't actually win (.....but they totally did). Quote
