UIL is doing their best to give kids who do not have the resources and the attention that 5A/6A and even 4A programs have an amazing experience. Yes, this is exactly the positive reasoning behind this scheduling decision and I very highly applaud the idea. This is why as TxBands, we run the live blog for every band in every classification both on Monday and Tuesday. All of the bands have worked hard and all of them deserve it. But also, yes, this is a bit of a scheduling disaster to have 5A running past midnight with awards likely extending into the 1am territory. All of the reasons that people are upset are valid too. Hopefully a better way can be found in later years. I just want everyone to keep in mind that this is also a big benefit to the kids in the 1A schools and will be an experience that they've never had before.. principalagent, Hard Core Band Fan and BKSledge 3
Xenon Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Also, as far as Jerry World goes, the cost of renting just the field for one day completely blows away the *entire* budget of the SMBC. Hard Core Band Fan and BKSledge 2
Samuel Culper Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 I understand the desire to give the 1A bands an audience, but it is being done at great cost to 5A bands and their families. It is NOT a reasonable trade-off. This was very poorly conceived, with a high level of disregard for the effect on competition, convenience, expense and class time for the 5A folks. Robert_Jordan 1
Hard Core Band Fan Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 For this year, this is what they came up with and how it's going to be. Everything is a trade-off and they had to make concessions all the way around. It's just one day of the year and we can all be mature and make the best of it. Don't forget that we are fortunate to have competitions like this and fortunate to have so many high quality bands participating. We can't change it for this year anyway, so you may as well choose to enjoy it. I choose to celebrate the amazing talent, hard work, and dedication of the participants of these band programs. Sure, it's a really long day, but it's worth our time, money, and effort to support this event. Our attitudes are one of the few things we can control. Xenon and principalagent 2
Samuel Culper Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 Of course, on the day of it will all about the competition. Until that day, and after, the criticism is totally justified. Robert_Jordan 1
