Most folks are too young to know this show, but when Holliday pushes the panels of their mountaintop painting together at the end of their show, it reminds me of when The Colony did that with their train panels at the end of their Ghost Train show back in 2000. Very effective.

That was the first time I had ever seen backdrops like those. Really, 2000 is my favorite entire year of Finals.

Congrats to New Deal! Itty bitty town between here and Lubbock. Was hugely impressed with the video I saw 3 weeks ago, definitely not surprised they took it.

And congrats to Whitesboro on the repeat!

Very proud of my Alma Mater Canyon.  They've been working incredibly hard since to move up from 3A in 2008, and it was pretty surreal getting to watch them perform at state for the first time in 9 years on the webcast this morning!  Their progression in recent years has been a blast to watch develop.  I bet it only continues in the coming years, they're doing everything they can to become a better program every year.

Waxahachie's closer sounds unnervingly similar to Cedar Park 2013 opener, even the nuances in the music I remember are there, haha

Great run though. They and Centennial look great.

They're also using Battle on the Ice, which Vandegrift used in 2013.

My personal favorites from the first half of 5A:

-Vista Ridge.  The velocity!  I also adore that reprise of Kaval Sviri at the end.  The most blended sound from treble to bass so far today.

-Waxahachie.  Lovely musical selections all over and I am sucker for the Tchaikovsky R&J that they nailed at the end.

-Centennial.  Just a great show with incredible brass on all that tough Respighi.  Do they ever go to BOA?  Would love to see them there - I think people would be talking about them the same way as Wakeland if they just had some more exposure at the early season contests.  Come to BOA Austin next year!

-Chisolm Trail. The band sounded just lovely on Jupiter and Elsa's Procession.  Great idea to use that during the Queen's coronation scene.

-McKinney.  Truly, all of the sections sounded as if they were indeed "on fire" during parts of that show.  So many notes.

Watching at work in between meetings and really wishing I'd taken the day off so I could just sit at home and watch uninterrupted.  Great morning of bands so far!

I'm not a drumline guy, and rarely notice them, but Vandy's drumline is on freaking fire! They command your attention! This show has really grown on me throughout the year.

Leander/Cedar Park are just on a completely different level then the rest of this competition. It's them, then everyone else. As to who takes gold tonight, I have no idea. But there's your 1-2.

5 Area D, 4 Area B and Waxahachie. No real surprises here. The judges are gonna get a reallllly good comparison of the LISD bands. There's no way that's random, right? What could possibly be the chances the 4 of them would start out finals?
