A general finals inflation of about two points. Despite that, I think judges' comments would be necessary to explain Richland's jump from being 0.2 points behind Haltom in prelims to being 3 points ahead of them in finals -- a 4.9 point jump overall (!). Was it a difference of performance quality? Did the judges simply have a more direct comparison? Was it a difference of opinion between the prelims and finals judging panels? Or a combination of any of those factors? It's hard to say, but it was across the board improvement. Actually, it was straight 2nd's from each judge. And, although it's true that in specific captions it's the judge's ranking that tends to adjust the score rather than the score pushing around the ranking, some of Richland's music caption scores in finals were really biting at the heels of Marcus' own. So, that needs interpretation by judges' comments to say if we'll continue to see music scores pushing up towards tier 1 for them.

Both Haltom and Richland are setting themselves up well for storming St. Louis finals on behalf of Texas.

Wow....that's the first I've seen of the scoring and you're right, they were right on the heels of Marcus in music.  It was an incredible showing by Richland after a couple of very tough years.

BISD was represented very well by both Haltom and Richland at HEB.  The next few weeks are going to be very exciting for the Rebels.

I attended and was in the Richland band recently so I might be able to shed a little light on it.

Richland just absolutely killed it in finals. I've never seen anything like that out of Richland. They looked like a top tier band like you would see out of the top 3 at a super regional or something. Their brass was incredibly powerful, much more so than Marcus. Their DCI instructors are starting to show through. I totally could not believe my eyes and ears. It wasn't a judging anomaly or anything, they just popped off an incredible show. They have an incredibly demanding show that is hard to make happen and in finals they absolutely made it happen.

Richland's rise has to do with a couple things. In the past few years Richland has oversized their band. They had Freshmen marching who weren't ready and by the end of the year they always had multiple holes they couldn't fill. They had people switching and fudging instruments to make it work. This year they cut back on their drill numbers, they actually have a decent amount of non-varsity members, and it's made them a million times cleaner. They also hired a show design coordinator for the first time ever, and have new drill and music writers who are doing an amazing job.

Were you able to see both prelims and finals? Was there much a difference in finals? I watched from near the box for prelims, and had a super quick chat with Mr. Bird, but after that I had to dash for the rest of the day (sister's wedding; can't miss that!!), so I missed finals. But the prelims performance looked and sounded pretty solid, which is why I was amazed at the score jump above Haltom in finals.

The prelims run was indeed very good, but early in the day is hard to compare to late in the day. I personally thought that the finals run was much more focused musically and visually and very deserving of its 2nd place finish.
