inmysights31 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 I have got to find a way to either perform in or watch this contest next year. Quote

Majellan Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 All things being equal, which they aren’t but fun to speculate anyway. Tarpon Springs won Atlanta with a 92.25, good for 9th place in San Antonio....amazing. That makes relative sense considering Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 My guesses for top 30 and the actual results using finals for top 14 and prelims for everyone else: 1. Flower Mound (6) 2. Claudia Taylor Johnson (1) 3. Hebron (2) 4. Avon (4) 5. The Woodlands (11) 6. Marcus (7) 7. Vandegrift (3) 8. Ronald Reagan (5) 9. Leander (14) 10. L.D. Bell (15) 11. James Bowie (13) 12. Round Rock (18) 13. Keller (9) 14. Hendrickson (10) ------------- 15. Cedar Park (8) 16. Winston Churchill (21) 17. Cedar Ridge (12) 18. Vista Ridge (16) 19. Wakeland (29) 20. Cy- Fair (20) 21. Coppell (25) 22. Keller Central (33) 23. Pearland (17) 24. Clear Brook (27) 25. Timber Creek (24) 26. James Martin (39) 27. Westwood (19) 28. Wylie (22) 29. Friendswood (28) 30. Seven Lakes (23) I had the top 30 guessed correctly except for putting Keller Central and James Martin in over Oak Ridge and Plano East. Quote
inmysights31 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 What I want to know is how did Leander fall so far and Keller rise so high??? Did anyone see the performances or have any theories? Quote

Bandwoww Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 11-15 in prelims was extremely close, it could’ve gone any way. But Keller totally brought it up in finals to justify the huge jump in placement. 91.975 in 9th place is insane. This competition was way too close. So many tied subcaptions in finals. Quote
snares Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 So now that i am completely wrong and absolutely stunned at the intensity of this competition, I can give my opinions on actual results. I do believe that Hebron still should have won Music, as I don’t think anyone was as clean as they were. Visually CTJ had one of the hardest books and I agree with what Rubisco said earlier, I just thought they were a little dirty. Vandegrift was absolutely a shock to me. They’re always pushing for a medal and I’m really glad they got it, they were way past my expectations. Vandy has my favorite show, I of course loved CTJs GE and Hebrons mellos are literally music form of addictive drugs. Incredible. While I disagree with the judging results, I don’t necessarily disagree with placements. I’m also not a professional who is payed to do their job and I definitely do not know what I’m talking about most of the time. There’s probably a lot of things judges on the field saw or heard that was different than what most of us heard. Anyways. Time to go in to my hole for 6 months until marching season comes back #DCI. natertater21000 1 Quote
clrk503zm Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 For the Houston bands, I am unsurprised by Cy Fair. I thought they should have been a bit higher. What I am surprised about is how Seven Lakes edged out Friendswood and Clear Brook. Did anyone get to see their performances and if so, what caused Seven Lakes to shoot up this year because prior to this they hadn't placed higher than 34. BluebariPancake 1 Quote

Jane D'oh Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Question from a noob: I loved Vandegrift's show, and I think their dance team does a fantastic job. But how can they be judged on the same standard as groups like Avon and Bowie, whose guards spin and toss every kind of equipment like maniacs and with incredible skill? Vandy just does some swing flag, and I don't remember seeing them toss anything. Quote
Popular Post LostChoirGuy Posted November 5, 2017 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2017 I know that there are a few people from Avon who have been following this thread. I just want to reach out to you and vicariously to the Avon Black and Gold and say what an honor it is that you came and joined us this weekend. Looking at your past BOA results I realized that it has been many years since you have missed out on a medal at any event, and I hope that this doesn't discourage you. Your show is fantastic and I am certain will be right at the top at grand nationals. I hope you enjoyed your time in Texas. I would also like to say thank you for what you have done to improve the nature of marching band in our state. Simply by coming this year, you fostered an environment of competitiveness that has pushed our "bubble bands" to improve in vast measures to keep up. In addition, you have given some of our good bands that aren't quite ready to make the trip or that don't have the funding to go to grand nationals the chance to see a truly phenomenal visual program which is rare to witness here. I hope that the band and all associated parties have safe travels home and I can't wait to see what you accomplish next week! Xenon, Parkwoodmom, snares and 6 others 9 Quote
principalagent Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Carmel coming to Texas in 2002 was humbling, but there’s no doubt that their win was very responsible for the huge changes Texas has made in visual in the 15 years since. Avon bringing their visual to Texas will, I believe, do much of the same. It was an honor to see you, and I can’t wait to fly to Indy and see it again this weekend! 5 te 6 and Xenon 2 Quote

I agree - I met a number of Avon parents over the past 2 days - hope they enjoyed their stay in Texas and decide to make this a routine trip in their marching season. I stuck around to watch the CTJ encore (had to see it again) - and saw that the Avon band was in the stands to watch and cheer for the band - class act - safe travels Parkwoodmom and akinez 2 Quote

But I do agree about the guard. They're more of a dance team and I don't think I recall seeing them toss anything or use any other equipment other than flags. I will have to go look at the videos to confirm. Can someone remind me about Bell- are they the same? Do they use any other equipment other than flags? Quote

The reality is guard amd percussion aren't really judged as deeply under the boa sheets compared to something like dci. Quote
zururoua Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 How many bands are we gonna see next year that finish learning their whole show by the first competition? Definitely worked for ctj this year justabandkid94 1 Quote

Definitely worked for ctj this year I was thinking the same thing - will a full show in September become the norm in Texas? I will have to go back and find my quote from a few weeks ago - I predicted CTJ would win SA based on the data. for the last 4 or 5 years I looked at, any band that won a Texas regional by more than 1.65 points has won San Antonio Data is king - and as tight as the scoring was (.30 between 1st and 3rd in prelims) they had a full point win in finals congrats to CTJ - heck of a show and a great season - 2 regional and a super regional win in their season - shame that show wont be in Indy next week - maybe next year The_Raven, Scterm, whitewing09 and 2 others 5 Quote

Popular Post AvonDad1971 Posted November 5, 2017 Popular Post Posted November 5, 2017 Avon parent here. Thank you Texas for wonderful hospitality, a lovely city, and jaw dropping competition! Wow. This is our first year in marching band and we had NO idea what we were getting into, but we love it. The Indy super regional was dull by comparison. Now if we can just carry the intensity y'all gave us into grand nats next week, we are sure to crush Carmel! Hebron's sound blew me away, and FloMo dazzled me. Vandergrift was soooo smooth, and CTJ...ok, I admit, I didn't quite get CTJ. Maybe it was too much for this noob to catch it all. But every show was thrilling. Thanks again, Texas. Scterm Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 To the contrary banddad84 - data is not King when dealing with the arts. Regardless who won or their score it's a matter of preference in many cases. CTJ deserved to win last night but comparing these productions on a numerical basis is almost impossible. These finals bands are the best of the best and CTJ did not win prelims. I would hate to be a judge when they are all that good and accomplished. Quote
