QuadraticBeats Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 I find it particularly strange that so many bands play excerpts of Vanguard music. Westwood... Bowie... both this year, and probably even more throughout Texas... Quote
Dynasty Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Well... It's not like SCV music is originally composed JUST for them. Most of those selections are common pieces of music that have been arranged for corps. That would be like saying anyone who played the Planets or Phantom of the Opera would be copying Cavies 95 or Vanguard 89, respectively. This is totally not true... Quote
Danpod Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 It all comes down to how the music is arranged. Quote
QuadraticBeats Posted December 6, 2005 Author Posted December 6, 2005 Depends on the show... Planets, Phantom, etc. But still, the idea of playing music like this seems to be derived from what drum corps have played... the thing about it is once its a commonplace show, it just loses some of its original identity. It can preferably be made more original, but still... it's just not quite the same feeling, since alot of inspiration for marching band shows comes from Drum Corps. Personally, I prefer just snippets or perhaps a part of a movement or a whole movement rather than an entirely watered down version of shows, noble as those attempts are. The Planets, among others, are definitely a probable exception, though... given it being roughly one hundred years old. Quote
mnkyman Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 ^here name your show music from this year.. i bet there was a corp that has done it in the past... planets is a very common piece Quote
MartinHorn Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 our show was Harmonic Journey from Phantom Regiment. Except of course we had to rearrange it to include the instruments not included in drum corps. And we named it Soundscapes. Quote
Fortisimo Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 And it most certainly was not watered down. Don't believe me? Listen to the recording of Ostinato. Quote
QuadraticBeats Posted December 8, 2005 Author Posted December 8, 2005 Our band director has a great fondness for original marching show music written by M.C. Escher... my favorite thing about him. So as a result, I'm rather leery of music that has been played in another marching show before. Of course, that doesn't stop anyone from winning with such music... And what I mean by "watered down" is that I just think that something is not as good as the corps variation. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted December 8, 2005 Posted December 8, 2005 original marching band compsition by m. c. escher?? i hope we're thinking of two different m. c. eschers. the one i know of was a famous artist known for his use of crazy dimension stuff. Quote

But the extra instrumentation (woodwinds, etc. ) can add to the show as well. But yes, I must say in 99% of the cases, these adaptaions are far from their bigger cousins in the DCI world. Quote
