I was super impressed at area as well! Visual was near spotless for a vast of the show. Couldn’t keep my eyes off of it. I think they will maintain their state finals streak but that super early performance time is a bit of a bummer.

hmm... Has anyone here seen this video?

(sorry, I had to remove the link, but the video is one from BOA SR finals by a mello player at CTJ)

It's actually really cool, and I'd like to do something like this, but under the BOA FAQ it says that no type of camera is allowed on the field. I'm not sure if that includes the performers, but another thing is that a student in my band last year did a gopro video during BOA SR finals as well. Anyone's thoughts? I know it's not entirely state related, but I'd like to hear your opinions on this.

Years ago I attended Grand Nationals and I recall that they (BOA) showed a video on the jumboscreen from a band's performance during prelims taken with a Gopro that was strapped to a marcher. It was BOA who put the camera on the student to begin with, however. It wasn't something the band did on their own.

Is Westlake a legitimate contender here?

Depends on the definition of contender.  I don't think they will medal, but that puts them is great company.  They have a shot at finals.  I hope they play their hearts out and have a great show, I hope the same for all the bands.  And who knows judging is a human element.

This is a great Band weekend, and a super long one.

Hi! Just a quick question; is there anything against wearing GoPros during UIL State Finals or BOA Finals? I would like to wear one but I'm not sure if points would be taken off for wearing them.

State?  I don't think I would risk it....the stakes are too high.

BOA - I would say absolutely not....they have very strict rules against recording performances.

To be honest, I'd save that for a non-competition performance.

I was at area H last weekened. To me, Westlake was comparable to Leander in every way. They have taken leaps and bounds in show design and excellence this year. I was not surprised to see them edge past leander in finals at area. This takes nothing away from Leander, they are fantastic season and have a great show, I would just say the same about westlake.

Leander is a for sure finalist at BOA SA in my opinion, and a likely finalist for state, and I think Westlake could surprise some folks and be in the mix for both.

Other area H thoughts - Vista Ridge is VERY strong but Vandegrifts show seems destined for UIL greatness. will be insteresting to see them head to head at BOa and state. Overall - I was very impressed with all of the finalist bands at area H. THis is one of the strongest areas in the state, just wish they had more bands so more could advance to state!

I assume everybody's favorite band also smells worse after a big competition than their football team at the end of Friday night. Correct?

My wife is on the uniform sewing/cleaning team and I can definitely tell you that uniform room can smell pretty bad after a few weeks!! :-)

Don’t count us out just because of a wonky UIL judging yesterday. ;)

How was the Judging for Leander Wonky at Area? Seemed consistent for both prelims in finals.

Well the "bad judge rule" was used (even though that particular judge ranked leander over Westlake) but I think what most are referring to is simply the difference in judging between the circuits. Leander's show is not very friendly to uil to put it lightly.

It wasn't.  I was speaking from emotion that day and was obviously wrong.  One judge even gave Vista Ridge a 4, so obviously any wonkiness included all of the bands.  It worked out in the end.

Stop apologizing! You made a joke and some people can't handle jokes. That is an issue on THEIR end not yours. They made something out of your comment that wasn't intended and you have done nothing wrong. Just let them deal with it. The only safe thing to do these days is not comment here at all. Everything everyone says here seems to upset someone. It's the main reason I don't post often anymore. It's just not worth it.

I'm sorry I keep apologizing.

Call me crazy but I think Vista Ridge could take gold at State.

This is far from a crazy opinion.

Don't jinx it!  They're having a great year and as a Vista dad I could be happy if the season ended today.  After watching practically flawless shows from Westlake, Leander, and Vandegrift at Area, I was wondering if we even belonged on the same field.  But then they just nailed it.

At State, I'll be thrilled if they make finals for the honor of being in that company.  After four years of this, I give the kids my version of the "Hoosiers" speech... look, this is highly subjective, how others perform is not in your control, you made it this far, so if you leave it all on the field then in my book you're a winner.

As for predictions, I haven't seen any other of the top contenders from outside of Austin area yet, except I saw CTJ live at BOA/Austin.  There hasn't been enough head-to-head competition for me to make any meaningful predictions.  Notable, though, that CTJ "only" placed third behind Bowie and Reagan at Area last week.

There’s a nice video of our prelims run that someone posted, it’ll probably be taken down soon:

What the heck! That was an awesome show

I wonder if there will be any shakeups in the placements that people aren’t expecting

I can see some up and coming houston based groups cause an upset
