I've always wondered, how can a show be more for UIL than BOA? I know that all UIL judges are in the box, but is that all?

No, there is mush more. Both organizations have judging guidelines on their websites but this video is a concise synopsis.

It will probably help as much, or maybe even more, than anything anyone here will tell you.

Actually, I think it’s more like:

BOA: are we confused by the esotericism of this show? Champion!

UIL: “this wasn’t as good as my 1928 military style marching band but I guess I’ll give it some credit”

Except that the weird esoteric show got 14th and the straight forward rainforest show got 1st last year.

If you think the rainforest show was straightforward you have probably been to at least one to many BOA competitions. :)

"Those who know us … a show about a rabbit … a show about dancing … a show about a lizard .. a show about a forrest … while there are some deep meanings … sometimes it’s face value." you can pull some deeper things for sure, but the show is for the most part very straightforward.

Sure the themes are straightforward but that's not typical UIL drill and design out there. And I've chased the rabbit before. I know deeper meaning when I see it.

Was that directed at me? Surely you jest.

I never said it was typical uil drill or design. I said that in comparison to the esoteric show that leander put out, forest through the trees was much more straightforward.

dude - we all have our preferences - and mine happens to be for the shows like the Forrest through the Trees - and it would appear that the BOA judges all agreed with me last year - 3 times

No problem, it's just that now we're really off track. The original question and answer were both about the difference between UIL and BOA judging. Getting into issues of placements within BOA completely misses the point.

I mean if you want to talk about how they are judged just look at the sheets: UIL sheets give a lot of freedom to judges on what to consider within a few "sub-captions" so to speak. The BOA sheets ask guiding questions for judges to answer about a show.

Look at captions themselves: no two judges in BOA have the same sheet except for in MGE. In UIL three judges have the same music sheet, two have the same visual sheet. Also UIL doesn't care about effect/design just performance. In BOA 60% of one's score is GE.

In BOA judges are generally on the field or on (or close to) the 50 in the box. UIL puts music judges on the 50 and both 45's in the box and outs visual judges on the 30's. None on the field in UIL.

In terms of how the shows are designed with BOA shows you see many programs take big risks for effect. In UIL you see many programs play it safer with highly accessable shows the judges can immediately get that are less risky (not always easier per say).

The simplest way to sum it up is this: UIL cares how clean you look and sound from up top. BOA, while it does care about how clean you are on and above the field, they care a bit more about how visual and musical elements work to create an incredible emotional effect.

No, it isn't crazy. I'm just not sure people are prepared for just how fantastic that show is.

I haven't seen any part of this show yet and I'm looking forward to the first time being in San Antonio live at 6A state finals!
