Judging is always wonky, every band can point to a state or area competition where they were disappointed by a single judge. Quote
ChristopherRoden Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 I’m sure everyone is a bit confused at some of placements under the finalists. In the end there’s nothing we can do is there? Oh well Mash 1 Quote

Obviously, very unfortunate for Round Rock, but hopefully the kids could appreciate the feeling they had for their performance instead of focusing on a bad result. I will admit back in high school it was harder to see the bigger picture, but now as an adult you really appreciate just performing with your friends and giving it all that you had to give fans a great show. Popular Post principalagent Posted November 6, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 6, 2018 One thing that I'm a little sad about it is the sheer and striking lack of socioeconomic representation in this year's group of finalists. It's overall a wealthy group from wealthy school districts. Probably the least affluent band in the bunch is Leander or Waxahachie, but Leander is still pretty solidly middle class (although with a sizable number of ECODIS students) and Waxahachie is experiencing growth driven by well off people moving outward. it was nice to have Duncanville or North Shore in finals to serve as a sign that this wasn't dispositive. Now, they're both looking like exceptions that proved the rule. On 11/6/2018 at 4:43 AM, LeanderMomma said: How do you feel about this panel? Will things likely change a lot tomorrow? Though I’m cringing at the thought that if there wasn’t one judge giving Round Rock a 34, TWHS wouldn’t have made finals and they’ve always been a “lock”. LeanderMomma 1 Quote
FloMoParent Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 @LeanderMomma I was just informed that Mrs. Drinkwater, the current Lewisville Director of Fine Arts, former FM Marcus Band Director, got her start in Leander. If that is correct, that is a neat connection. KinDallas 1 Quote
snares Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 RR got robbed, to say the least. It’s really hard to see a relatively consistent line and then one outlier like that. It’s crazy hard to judge an entire day of bands, but that just shows to me that there’s a bit of a fundamental difference in judging philosophy between judges. Also, my reaction to the results between the finalists is to completely ignore them! Just like BOA, prelims never is an exact picture of finals. If you want a fun pass of time, go look at 6A state results from the past three cycles (I believe it was 5A in 2012). CTJ made a huge jump to 3rd from 7th in 2014. Hebron jumped both in 2012 and 2014. FloMo took 3rd in prelims in 2014 and then dropped to 9th in finals. These scores to me are very unreliable for the most part and ultimately I believe needs a change. I don’t know what that change should be (possibly adding another music and another visual judge and dropping the highest and lowest scores), but the fact that one judge can completely change the fate of a band is kind of unnerving to me. TWHSParent Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 For those curious, the ordinal spread between 12th and 13th was 13. Round Rock and Oak Ridge tied with judges preference going to Round Rock. Avisshadow 1 Quote
Bluewinter22 Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 So I just heard United got 34th. That’s pretty awesome. First time at state a few years ago the ended up getting last I believe in prelims. Anyone have any word on the other Laredo band, Alexander? They had a really neat show and I’m curious to see where they landed. Mash 1 Quote

Popular Post gregorydf01 Posted November 6, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 6, 2018 Wow, Vista Ridge had the top points and 2nd in Placement! So proud of them!!!!Some history: The Sr's at Vista Ridge have had more changes in Marching Directors in the past 4 years than years (5 changes). No change with Mr. Christian as Sr. Director, but he is not the Marching Director, hat's off to him for keeping VR competitive through all of this! Having Mr. Atkinson on board for the whole season and summer along with the youthful influence of Mr. Santos it really makes a big difference! Here is to more stability for the next several years! Duncanville when I competed was always a marvel to me because despite the challenging situation many students were in they played so well and their marching was always very clean, and it made you believe that anyone could be great at music. I love my alma mater(Wakeland), but as things progressed I truly realized the advantages we had that did make a huge difference in determining our success. Quote
Popular Post Mash Posted November 6, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 6, 2018 I wouldn't put Vista as a lock for anything at this point. I have seen them get great scores one day and then the next they get scored low. They need to play their hearts out and leave a show that is their best yet. I am super proud of them, and the show is a really special this year. Nothing tomorrow is set. I would say the top three will most likely come from the top 5 today, but nothing is set. Agreed on the director changes at Vista, so many changes recently and this band director hasn't even had a full year with them yet. LISD has such a great music instruction program that I am not surprised. The district pushes each other in band but support each other as well. gregorydf01, vincentlee1220, LeanderMomma and 1 other 4 Quote
