Dog885 Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 87 bands, this really is just the Grand Nationals of the south. I'm very interested with how our annual 1 non Texas school, Camdenton will do. Quote
abtwitch Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 I'm excited for actual competition for the AA champion, on top of last year's Southwest, we have Pioneer and Camdenton. I really wish BOA would draw in more smaller-sized schools in Texas, they really only pull from smaller 5A schools. If we could get North Lamar, Argyle, China Spring, etc. to come to BOA, that would be very fun! Edit: thought Camdenton was AAA at first Quote
principalagent Posted May 9, 2018 Posted May 9, 2018 Pioneer is 3A now, I believe. However, Weiss should now be 2A. Quote

I think technically it will end up being 80 bands (maybe?). According to their site, some of those on the list are on a waitlist. Not sure how many that is. Even with 80, that is a pretty Super-Duper Regional! This list of enrolled bands includes those currently with performance times, and those on a waitlist awaiting performance spots. The preliminary performance schedule will be published approximately four weeks prior to the event. Enrolled bands have been sent their performance block and enrollment status. Quote
Popular Post abtwitch Posted May 10, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 10, 2018 I guess I'm a bit biased coming from a upper mid-tier band like Westwood, but I get a bit of fatigue from the idea of BOA San Antonio. Almost the top groups go every year, so the all of the finalists (bar 1 or 2) are locks. Unlike Grand Nats or other super regionals, there isn't as much variety in finalists as I'd hope. Sure with grand nats, you have the bands that are more or less guaranteed a spot whenever they go, but the attendance changes year to year enough so that you're always excited to see different groups perform year to year. I'm not saying there is no variety, just not as much as I'd hope. You can see this same effect in other Texas regionals, especially Austin where the all the 2016 finalists returned in 2017 and the same for this next fall. DFW and Houston aren't quite there yet, but they are on that track. I'm glad they're adding more regionals (McAllen starting in '15, Midland '17, and Waco '18) so that bands like Westwood who have trouble making it into the their regional contest finals get a chance to shine. I'm not really mad, I think the depth of Texas bands is great, but reading about how really the only last slot of finals is up for question is bothersome. My dream would to boost up the number of finalist bands, but that's unrealistic when it comes to time for super regionals. Or we could literally take the Grand Nats format and officially make San Antonio BOA Grand Nationals South, giving those excellent bands at least the ability to say "advanced to semi-finals" and attracting more great bands from nearby (Broken Arrow, Union, Lafayette, Clovis, etc.) to mix things up a bit more. tl;dr Texas is big and great, just it might be too much for a single super regional CTJBandPops, PSHSMom and EmanTheGreat 3 Quote
LeanderMomma Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 I, too, wish that San Antonio would go to a prelims, semi's & finals format, but that would take an extra day and I'm not sure bands would do both BOA SA and Grand Nats in the same year ever if they had to miss that much school. Schools in Texas are okay with kids missing for UIL, but not as much for Bands of America. CTJBandPops 1 Quote
jetliner Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 Quote I also think the San Antonio fatigue is why we see many of the SA bubble bands taking trips to Atlanta (rip) and St. Louis and showing what they are capable of. I've also seen it mentioned that making finals at one of those events really gives the kids the motivation to make finals back in SA (whether it be in the same season or the one following) after being out of finals years previous, a la Cedar Ridge or Cypress Falls. CTJBandPops 1 Quote
CTJBandPops Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 that same fatigue is why BOA has expanded over the past few years in Texas, adding Austin, McAllen, Midland, and now Waco. While Austin is now stacked with BOA SA finalist (like DFW and Conroe) , the others do not yet do so but I would imagine that will change with time. giving some of those bands the finals opportunities and I think it will continue to drive them to continue to compete in San Antonio - I think the ceiling of 80 bands that they added this year to SA will eventually be moved up and at some point - will include a prelims, semi's and a finals like Gnats just my thoughts (and that with $10 will get you a Latte at Starbucks) LeanderMomma 1 Quote

A Testing Trumpet Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Interesting Fact: The last time L.D. Bell made finals at San Antonio was 2014, meaning that in the 2018 season, nobody in the band will remember making finals. Perhaps they will get to experience it this 2018 season! Quote
