Keep in mind that BOA McAllen and San Antonio have very, VERY, different levels of competitiveness. Juarez-Lincoln placed a solid 6th in McAllen, but 47th at San Antonio. Alexander placed behind Juarez-Lincoln by a few points, so they probably won't even have broken top 50 at San Antonio if they had decided to go. Of course, they could make some big leaps going into this year, so we shouldn't count them out completely, but I do think you may be underestimating the competitive level of San Antonio.

I saw the finals at SA so I Do not think I am underestimating, we are talking about the top 40 after all, but I could be wrong. I would even be bold to say that I didn’t agree with the placements in McAllen. Those early season regionals are tough to gauge because of how much groups change throughout the season. Bowie improved during their season last year and Leander seemed to drop towards the end. Great programs but I will agree to some degree the early season regionals band placements can change a lot.

Yes I did!

Just had to tease you, you did a pretty good job with the list!

PESH has consistently been in the top 40, so I sure hope that continues!

So to switch up the conversation a little, this year our only out of state participant is Camdenton, Missouri. They are a class AA band in BOA, finished in 3rd in AA and the 14th place finalist at St. Louis in 2017. While I don't think they will be a finalist at San Antonio, they certainly can win class AA and have a performance Saturday night. From looking at recent results, it would be between Camdenton and Southwest, and it looks fairly close. I think it is a great thing for the smaller out of state bands to come here, so we shouldn't forget about our visitors in 2018.

I think one lesson at least several of the bands learned last year, for sure, is that if you stay at the same level as in previous years, you will be passed up. It is no longer good enough to maintain your current standard of performance and expect to have the same success. Round Rock, in particular, learned this the hard way. At least I hope they learned this. It's a different game every year and you are either moving forward or sliding backwards.

Well said.

Though I will say by “different” you mean “increasingly cutthroat” :)

No, not so much that, but meaning that it doesn't matter what you did last year or previous years. The slate is clean and what you are doing now is the only thing that matters.

Sure. The beauty of High School Band is that you only need one season to greatly shift the course, momentum, and public impact of your band. Case in point from a Houston perspective: Pearland 2017.

I'm glad you mentioned Pearland. I've been impressed with them in the last couple of years and wonder if they might be one of the next bands to break out of the pack. I hope that their results last year at BOA San Antonio will motivate them to keep pushing ahead.

It was kinda crazy to me to come to the realization that Pearland very well could have been national finalists without ever having made super regional finals.

Their prelims run in the Alamodome was dirty and it still got them 17th. A clean run would have knocked Keller out. I can only imagine where Pearland would have been without the hurricane! Let that be the best example of design being half the battle.

I would agree - there are many of the big "known" bands that slide up and down each year in the top 5-10, but there are always the new members that have a defining year and enter that fold - In Texas we see that the fold continues to grow.

that was clear in San Antonio last year when there were many programs - 5 to 10 that would make finals in most any other regional or super regional

it will be interesting to see who will step up this year to enter that fold and who may fall out

I agree! and Pearland i feel is growing faster than people see i have also heard they are getting changes to make them better and with them beating big names like Round Rock and Churchill they could easily become a finalist this year

im prob putting them on my list for the finalist this year and feel free to challenge me on this im open

Has anyone heard who the exhibition bands are going to be?

Nothing has been announced yet. We usually see news pop up when performance schedules start releasing in about a month. I certainly hope The U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps shows up to a Texas Regional again. They tore the house down at the Southlake Regional last year!

I'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing this band from Missouri. They made their first BOA finals just last year (in St Louis), and they are traveling to quite a few BOA competitions this fall, including San Antonio and Grand Nats. I hope they have a fantastic season and an unforgettable experience in the Alamodome!

You did some looking to find John B. Alexander high school marching band in what Laredo? What about Frisco Wakeland? They came in 29th at San Antonio last year, I would wager they are at least on par with the valley schools. Some great bands down there but, comparatively they have trouble cracking 30 at boa. I think the highest I've seen in any statewide contest was Harlingen Marching Band got 21st at the state marching contest in 2014. Lopez College Prep led the way for valley schools last year at 40th at boa San Antonio. Dripping Springs beat 2nd place Roma by 5 points last year at McAllen.

I think for schools outside of the three big metro areas, I would say Del Rio in 6A is coming along.

I don't think Wakeland is going to BOA San Antonio this year... just Waco and DFW. I had to double check their schedule because I didn't see them on the list! They would definitely be top 40!
