Crown2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 When we were at Nationals in 2015 and the Finals list had just been announced the people around us were gushing about all the Texas bands and particularly Hebron's 1st place performance in Semi-Finals. You should have seen the looks on their faces as I explained how Hebron had just finished 3rd in their own school district. Absolutely unforgettable! I was really hoping Hebron was gonna win it all that year 1998-2018 and FloMoParent 2 Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Im not going to lie- that Hebron show feels more like a saxophone performance with background marching band. But when you sound that good, who is complaining? Hebron seems to have mastered the jazzy ballad. herbaflerb 1 Quote

It's more than alright with me though, cause that soloist is killing it! herbaflerb 1 Quote

The musical prowess the band showed during that show was incredible to say the least. Quote
Tomcat491 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Based on Conroe I'd definitely say Cy Fair, Oak Ridge, and Seven Lakes have a shot at finals. I don't think Churchill can hang on unless they improve a lot more than UIL restrictions typically allow Quote
1998-2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 I was really hoping Hebron was gonna win it all that year They did win, somebody just didn't tell all the judges. When we saw Hebron's show that year at BOA DFW I told my wife, "That kid is going to get a recording contract and a whole generation will be conceived to his music. Then I checked Twitter for reaction to the show and the first comment said, "I think I was just impregnated!" LeanderMomma and Nny14 2 Quote
1998-2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Ha! To be fair I'll admit I was editing and added the second part to that comment while LeanderMomma was pressing the like button. Gotcha. Quote
1998-2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 I think even BOA knew they might have goofed because now we have the "Hebron Rule" for all BOA Finals. FloMoParent and StrikerEZ 2 Quote

natertater21000 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 What's the Hebron rule? The new top half/bottom half schedule split for finals, well new as of 2016. Quote
StrikerEZ Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 What's the Hebron rule? The top half of bands that make finals go in the last half of the performance slots during finals, and vice versa. The rule was put in place because Hebron performed near the end of semis in Grand Nats, won semis, then had to go first in finals, which ultimately negatively impacted their score. The following year (or it might’ve been last year, I can’t remember), BOA put in the so-called “Hebron rule.” EDIT: Of course someone beat me to it. FloMoParent 1 Quote
1998-2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 What's the Hebron rule? Finals performance order used to be completely random but now it's split into randomized 6-10 followed by randomized 1-5. The change happened after 2015 GN. Hebron was so clearly first after Semi-Finals but drew the first performance time in Finals and many felt it cost them the Eagle. (And I apologize, I knew I should have included the explanation too.) Crown2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 What's the Hebron rule? Yeah I’ve never heard that Quote
principalagent Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Actually in the interest of complete and accurate information, all regular BOA regionals have always (or at least as far back as the recaps suggest) done a top five / bottom five split. Super Regionals and Grand Nationals never did until 2016--yes, because of Hebron. Quote
TWHSParent Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 It has happened to others too. In 2006 The Woodlands were 1st in Semi-finals, got the #1 draw for finals, and dropped to 4th. There is a history of this issue and not only Hebron 2015. 2015 was just the straw that broke the camel's back... 1998-2018 1 Quote
principalagent Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 I think the reason why it didn’t happen after TWHS was because they also had a really gnarly electronics failure that contributed to their drop and made it difficult to say performance time was why they lost. Also, at least a couple of bands had won from the second time slot, which made the argument have less heft at that time. Quote

Speaking of the magic of performance slot: did Bell and TWHS both win the eagle going third? Quote
Nny14 Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Speaking of the magic of performance slot: did Bell and TWHS both win the eagle going third? Well The Woodlands went right after Avon and right before Carmel so their biggest competition was grouped next to them. I think it's more about getting a better comparison than going earlier or later. principalagent and 1998-2018 2 Quote

meursault Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Let's be honest tho - had hebron gone in the last 6, they would have won, no contest. that's gotta be one of the best marching shows in all captions in the past few years. i mean really, go back and watch it - those kids were achieving things no other band came close to attempting. Nny14 Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 I mean... it was very good but come on. They didn't win a single caption or medal in San Antonio. Let's not view things through nostalgia goggles folks. Umm what are you talking about? They won music with Marcus. I think you need the goggles. Quote
