MadisonBandMan1 Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 Also you have to remember how much they are jazz running in that video- something extremely hard to clean. They are the closest to DCI that I have seen in any high school program - even closer than Leander imo. But I guess it doesn’t help that their director is a caption head in a top 6 drum corp. Bandnerd03 Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 I remember seeing a video from early October of CTJ last year and not seeing all the hype whatsoever. But I was absolutely amazed when I saw them in San Antonio. The way is see it is...it’s super dirty? Good. That means they have a super challenging show that pushes their boundaries but will cause them to grow exponentially by the end of the season. I think what they have is phenomenal if you look at it long term. It’s extremely hard to top your best season yet especially if it’s was a BOA San Antonio championship, but I do think this will be a phenomenal year for CTJ. I agree. I think the show has a lot of potential once they clean it up. In true CTJ style, I think it's much more BOA-oriented than UIL though. They'll have to do quite a bit of cleaning before it translates well in UIL. CTJBandPops 1 Quote

Totally. Jazz running was always the worst to clean. There's no way they lost their magic from last year over the course of six months, so I'm expecting something good by San Antonio. Danpod Posted September 14, 2018 Posted September 14, 2018 Here are some numbers: There are six bands in the 3rd block that have made at least one Regional Final since the beginning of the 2016 season. Quote
Majellan Posted September 16, 2018 Posted September 16, 2018 Interesting you mentioned that. BOA Waco has only one HS Band from the Entire Region 8 of UIL Attending. That is Robinson. Four of the Class 6A Schools are going to the Texas Music Championships in Round Rock and 14 of the other schools to include Waco High School are going to the Gatesville Marching Contest. Most of the Bands you recognize are from the Austin Area, which is almost 100 miles from Waco. I've never seen a Waco band at BOA, don't know why they would start now? I don't think distance has anything to do with it, CTJ is going to the valley BOA contest this year and went to Midland last year, both are much further from San Antonio than Waco. Waco is what, a 4 hour drive at most, roughly the same as going to Conroe from the North side of San Antonio. Robinson has always had a good band in Class 4A, they won't come in last. Quote

whitewing09 Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 Looks like Cedar Park and Round Rock will duke it out for champion. Interestingly, they are probably the two most storied bands to have never won a regional, both having placed in the top 5 at gnats in relatively recent history. Maybe Hendrickson can dark horse it and surprise us. Rock underwent design change and Henny had a major director change...things have been quiet... The suspense is killing me. Otherwise I'm excited to see what Northshore will bring. Quote

Well, technically Round Rock did win BOA Austin a few years back and lost due to a 1.5 point penalty that was a simple mistake by the head director. As far the actual performance, they did win that day. North Shore beat Round Rock at state in 2016, so who knows. scoobydoo and Nny14 2 Quote

North Shore did indeed beat Rock Rock in 2016 at UIL State, but the relationships between UIL success and BOA success tends to go the other direction; Bands that do better at BOA tend to do better at UIL. Marcus? Rumor has it, they're having a rough transition after Drinkwater's promotion. principalagent 1 Quote

I'm well aware of the differences between UIL and BOA, but on that day, North Shore was ahead enough that it wouldn't have made any difference where they were. The margin was significant. Also, my observation over the last decade or so is the difference between BOA and UIL is narrowing. To me, the biggest difference now is the scoring system. UIL's antiquated scoring system needs to be scrapped and replaced with something more relevant and manageable. Hope I live long enough to see that! Quote

Hope I live long enough to see that!I definitely agree the the differences are narrowing, insofar as bands that are successful at BOA are having more success at UIL. They aren’t converging; UIL is conforming. CTJ is a great example of this, which is why I mentioned the relationship is inidirectional. Some bands are good at doing both like FloMo 2016. This is a trend that’s become more obviously in the past decade. What you don’t see is very traditionally UIL shows (e.g. duncanville until very recently, coppell several years ago, and North Shore now) doing amazingly in BOA. Heck even in 2016 Bell failed to make finals at BOASA, while round rock was safely in. However, Bell managed to stay ahead of both Round Rock and NorthShore at UIL, which is more execution focused. Just from that evidence alone, I’m not convinced that North Shore could have made finals at BOA SA. Their show wasn’t design as a BOA show and their execution wasn’t enough to beat bell who Round Rock handily beat at SA. From a video I saw earlier, it’s hard for me to imagine that North Shores priority isn’t to make UIL state finals. I’ll be happy for them to prove me wrong! But, it just doesn’t seem probable. Quote

aaron067 Posted September 21, 2018 Posted September 21, 2018 Rumor has it, they're having a rough transition after Drinkwater's promotion. We played Marcus last week. It seems like they've got the same style of show as usual, and they still sound great. My understanding (but I'm not certain) is they've learned their entire show, though they didn't perform all of it during halftime. That would constitute a significant departure from their traditional learning sequence and could be the reason why some people might think they're having a rough time. It's still early though, and they have plenty of time to clean before Waco. Quote
