Thoughts? Quality of bands here seems to be consistent with last year’s BOA Conroe, so this should be very competitive and enjoyable.

Churchill is a band that always has an enjoyable show, regardless of where they place. I have their opener from 2015 stuck in my head to this day.

The big 3 NEISD schools (CT Johnson, Ronald Reagan, and Churchill) did not move the school year start date up like most of the state. I would give these three good odds at Conroe (medal CTJ & Reagan) and agree that Churchill should be a finals lock.

More likely than not churchill will be in finals but i don't think it's a lock. I would have Del Rio in the upper bubble. This program received a 2 in UIL marching in 2013, made Area Finals in 2016 and made Finals in Two BOAs in 2017. 2017 was their BOA debut so I expect for them to improve. They are in an upward trend.

I definetely agree, they are getting very good.

Anyone think SFA will go back to being competitive again?

I hope.

I just heard that they had a staff change and a horrific show last year

Yes, which is very sad considering how great they were in 2016.

Takeaways from the Roster:

I’m really excited to see where many of these Houston bands will go with their shows this year. Cy-Fair, SFA, Oak Ridge, JET, Clear Brook, and especially Pearland.

With regards to the “big dogs” attending this competition, I’m curious as to whether the CTJ dynasty will continue to reign in 2018. Hoping Reagan, Vandegrift, Bowie, and some others will give them a run for their money.

And of course I’m excited AF for the future of my program, Seven Lakes. Our show got revealed to us (privately ;) ), and it is out to surprise.

This is not confirmed, but if it plays out like it did in 2015, TWHS will not be performing in finals at this contest (assuming we qualify). There is an away football game that evening at Klein Cain and for some reason that takes priority. Utter hogwash in my view.

Oh my goodness, that's ridiculous! Football is just the activity that happens before and after the halftime show. We band folks know what's REALLY important! :D

Seriously though, that blows. :(

I recall that in the past - it is a shame - a program such as TWHS that has won the Eagle not competing at a home event, to play a halftime - that is a crime and a shame that the school would have so little respect for a marching arts program with such a great program.

I hope it changes - we love watching TWHS perform

I hope this gets worked out for the Woodlands to be able to compete in Finals. That would truly be a real shame if these kids had to miss out on one of the top competitions of the season. BOA *is* our chance to shine. Not football games where no one pays attention and everyone is trying to talk loudly in order to be heard over the band!

On the other hand, I remember when the Leander band missed a football game for BOA San Antonio I believe, and when we were back in the stands the following week, several football parents sitting around us said to us, semi jokingly of course, "don't ever do that again!" Evidently it was quite boring without the band! :D

That’s because Leander football is... not seeing its best days

It generally seems to hold true that there’s an inverse relationship between football team quality and fine arts (specifically band) quality.

I have heard the same from FB Parents - it is not the same without the band......

I have seen the local middle schools step up to support the marching programs of our high schools during these trips out of town when they miss games

Yeah, when we went to St. Louis we had the middle school play at the game for us.
