Just saying that being that close but falling barely short does hurt. Anyway, hopefully 4 bands may advance this year as well. I predict the same 4 from 2016, but hopefully there is a shakeup. From there, Brandeis will be very strong as will Stevens. Didn't see Brandeis signed up for BOA SA which makes me sad as I love seeing Northside. Having grown up in Northside, I can only really speak for this district. I assume directing a band that big may present a serious challenge for the new O'Connor directors, but Dr. Mikulka wouldn't have hired a team that's not up to it. If OC is on the same trajectory as every state year, they will peak very nicely around area. I got a glimpse of Taft's show and though their sound at the moment isn't to die for, the show design is a definite step up and hopefully they can work with it. Warren wasn't too off from finals last time around by the way. Starting in 2014, Warrens been at a serious upward trajectory. I used to get jealous when other schools did better than mine, but not being too into "the game" anymore has allowed me to get very excited when any San Antonio schools succeed, but especially NISD. Miculka didn't hire that O'Connor staff. The principal did. Miculka only recommends what candidates to interview (after his screening) but she made the ultimate decision.
Samuel Culper Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 22 6A bands. Only room for two bands to not get a "1" rating.
principalagent Posted October 14, 2018 Posted October 14, 2018 Oof. Westlake might be in trouble. Actually on second look, it seems all of Region 11 got 1s last cycle, albeit one of them got a 2 last year. Could happen, or could not.

I really hope all of region 11s bands pull through for the sake of everyone!
Samuel Culper Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Question: Is Southwest a 6A school? They are not on the Region 11 Contest schedule, but listed in the Region Results thread. If the answer is no, then with 2 bands from Region 29 already eliminated, we need EVERY band from Region 11 and Region 32 to get 1's or we are down to three State slots. Region 32 won't be a problem. Region 11?
Samuel Culper Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Nevermind. Answered my own question. Southwest is in the 5A schedule. This is going to get dicey.
principalagent Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 The slight bright side is that there’s a decent chance that a 4th place band could slide in on judge’s preference. Specifically, two 3rd place votes in music and a 3rd place vote in marching will move a band onto state anyway. But let’s hope that doesn’t have to be a formulation we need to hope for.

Areas have independent determinations of how many bands they send to state based on the number of bands that qualify for the Area competition.

Sure seems that problems at School XYZ shouldn't penalize the 4th school that would have made it. It’s probably the most even and fair way to do it. In an Area with say 36 bands that only advances 19 to Area, should bands 4 through 7 have to pay for the other 17 bands’ problems? The geography of the state doesn’t lend itself super well to having areas of all equal size and/or caliber which makes it difficult to just have each area send a set amount. This is the most well rounded option. It sucks for the first band out sometimes, but this best guarantees that a good amount of bands from each part of the state make it to the big show. Remember, the kind of harsh reality is that state marching contest is about 1) crowning a champion and 2) showcasing the best of the state, from *throughout* the state. It, unfortunately, is not about grabbing the 30-40 best bands and having them duke it out. I can only think of one time in the last ten years that a 5A/6A champion or medalist were the last to advance from their area. Frankly, that almost proves that you don’t have to take every great band to advance cause 1, further allowing you to prioritize cause 2. Area B is experiencing the implications of that strain right now. whitewing09 and JeremiahW 2
Bandmanio Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Right now, every 6A in Region 32 and Region 11 must get a 1st division for there to be 20 bands in Prelims. If any band gets a 2 (possible in Region 11) then only 3 bands will advance to State. So that means, one of the Leander ISD 6A's or Westlake will be left at home. This is sad!
principalagent Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 We have a thread for this just a little down the page. We’re all waiting with baited breath for Region 11!

LHSax Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Just 3 bands advancing would be a major bummer. I don't think Westlake has even been scored this year, so there's obviously a chance they're not the odd man out, but the LISD schools are all at the top of their game this year and will be nearly impossible to top. Westlake has been at every 6A (old 5A) state marching contest dating back to 2008, and I believe they were pretty consistently there before that (they didn't advance in 2006). I miss the old Area D blood bath. Definitely had a lot more drama to it, but always had more bands advancing. LeanderMomma 1
