gmtb617 Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Does anyone know of band rehearsals being affected by the extreme heat across S/Central Texas right now? My school district (in the Houston area) has restricted outside events such as our outside rehearsal time to a max of 90 minutes multiple times this week already. Interested of any other vicinities experiencing these extremes, and also potential effects lost rehearsal time will have on bands going forward (Not like its for no good reason — health matters ) Quote
8to5brass Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 We still had rehearsal but we had some medical problems so had longer water breaks. We are also in the Houston area and will continue practices all week no matter the heat. Quote
brassclass Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Its been hot in DFW so we just get more water breaks (at my high school at least) and our director always tells us "it could be worse at least you're not on fire" Quote

Astros Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Know one school in Houston due to construction had to practice entirely outside for the last four weeks approximately 132 hours no shade heat index over 100! Who ever said marching band kids, color guard, and directors aren't tough? No Hurricane this year please! Quote
MarkD33 Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Yeah, it was definitely hot in the Houston area this week. Each rehearsal day, we had a group of parents fill coolers with ice water and abbout 300 washclothes. When the kids got a water break, then ran to the coolers to get a cool rag on their necks and heads first. It really worked well at keeping them a bit cooler and keeping their spirits & morale up. 8to5brass Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 This week at our school students worked crazy hard in the heat with feels like up to 117, so at the end of the week our director and a local snow cone truck came to school and it was 50% off for band kids and 50% of all proceeds went back to the band. Proud of the kids for fighting through even with the extreme heat and the occasional sick kid. Quote
