With the San Antonio Super Regional so huge, there needs to be a change in how Prelims is evaluated. Judges are people too!! Let's look at the new procedure change and how it will affect programs at ALL Super Regionals this year! Thanks for the support!!!

I am so so sorry for what hqppened, LeanderMomma. I hope your daughter feels better soon and I wish you good luck in your hunt for a new car. Thats so sad.

Also, one question danpod. If the judges are different, how are they going to put the right bands in the right place when the  scores are released? How is the "meshing"  of scores going to work?

I wish I could remember what I was saying here when I got that scary phone call. I'll have to listen to this podcast again and see if I can remember.

Oh geez. I am very glad she is okay and please let her know that we all wish her a speedy recovery!!!

I know you listen to this thing on repeat so I am not worried at all :)

Good question. It really does feel like this will be judged like two separate contests similar to Grand National Prelims. The task is a little more challenging at Super Regionals because you do not have a Semifinals contest to evaluate everyone again. There is always some shuffling between GN Prelims and Semis. However, if you are only scoring 43 bands instead of 86 across two days, the task of putting everyone where they should be becomes less daunting.

None of this should matter too much to the performer. I would hope that students attempt to crush their performance every time and not tailor how hard they perform to whom they are competing against.

You mention the numbers management in the video. I have had an opportunity to sit in the press box and tabulate the scores from the judges during Lone Star Preview last year (and probably will again this year), and the chief judge would occasionally check to see that things were staying within what he thought was the correct scoring region. That is the extent of my experience so far, so not much. Would something like that be happening between the panels here? Are they going to have the same chief judge? I would think they would want to start at essentially the same baseline so that the "next 4" will have as close as possible to an even comparison. It will be interesting and fun!

I would imagine that there would be one chief judge for the entire event (Same as Grand Nationals).  Those conversations do happen from time to time especially if there are a lot of programs that are really knocking it out of the park.

She's sore all over and upset at totaling my car, but we are all just so grateful she's okay because it was quite a serious 4 car accident.  It's so scary letting your kids drive in Austin, let me tell ya.  I can't imagine having one drive in the DFW or Houston area!!!!

And you know it on the listening on repeat...I have already listened again twice.  It takes me awhile to take information in so I have to listen several times...cuz you know...SQUIRREL!!

Austin traffic is the worst.  I didn't have that difficult of time navigating the DFW area, but the drivers were definitely something else.  I am still terrified to drive in Houston.

True story:

I went to the BOA Huntsville Regional in 2004 with a wonderful friend of mine.  She was going to drive to Houston and I was responsible for driving us back after the Regional.  I was so afraid to drive in Houston at night that we actually took side farm/county roads around the area until we somehow ended up in San Marcos in the middle of the night.  Quite a journey!

Oh my, I bet that WAS quite a journey!  I remember getting a phone call once from my now 30 year old when she was a fairly new 18 year old driver.  She called me from somewhere near the Louisiana state line.  Turns out, she was trying to come home from College Station and she missed the turn off in Hearne and ended up at I-20 near the Louisiana state line.  I still don't know how she got so far without realizing she was going the wrong way!!!

OMG, so sorry about your daughter, I'm glad she is okay.  It is really scary though, just driving anywhere these days.  My daughter totaled my car about a year ago (a driver ran a red light).   That was a new car (2016) with 8500 miles on it.

But all the airbags deployed and the front of the car was basically gone (he hit her from the passenger side, towards the front).

Make sure you daughter gets checked out.  My daughter was sore, and probably had a slight concussion from the airbags, and we could have just left it at that, but she did some physical therapy and chiropractic care for

about 3 months afterwards for soft tissue damage to the neck and spine.  It's at least worth a visit if you have a trusted chiropractor.

Anyway Prayers for a speedy recovery for her!

Yes, and it IS confusing since you do have to actually stop and make a left hand turn in Hearne to continue on to 79 West, yet if you keep going straight, you are STILL on 79, you are just headed East.  I do get that it's very confusing.  What I didn't understand was how she went that many miles out of the way before realizing she had made a mistake!  Did she not look at ANY of the road signs after Hearne where none of them mentioned Austin?

Yes, maybe I should have her checked out, good point.  She goes back to Texas State tomorrow though, so I just wasn't sure what to do.  Maybe I'll have her make an appointment for tomorrow with her doc before she leaves.  Thank you for sharing your story and recommending it.

I admit that I have shed many tears over just the fact my car is totaled.  (and probably a delayed stress reaction over the whole situation!)  I LOVED that silly car!  It was a 2012 Nissan Altima, fully loaded and with THE sweetest stereo system you can imagine.  She was a great car and I am just heartbroken over trying to replace it.  But I am oh so grateful for how well she took care of my baby girl in that wreck last night.  The airbags did deploy and the entire front end of my car is obliterated, so there's no fixing it.  But I'm ever so relieved that my baby girl is okay.  Cars can be replaced!

There definitely aren't any easy ways to get from CS to Austin without taking either 290 or 79.  I know exactly which turn you're talking about
in Hearne.  I've definitely missed that turn a few times heading from Huntsville to Georgetown....but I can't help but wonder why she made a
right there instead of a left.  She must've thought she was heading west or northwest instead of straight north and figured she needed to make a
right to head north towards 79.  It's kind of funny that she drove nearly 200 miles before realizing she'd hit Louisiana and had gone the
wrong way ^_^

I don't get down to downtown Houston much, but just recently when I came back from there, I thought I was on 290 heading NW towards Brenham/CS,
but I realized once I was in the Woodlands that I had actually gotten on I-45N somehow.

My first time driving in downtown Houston was BOA Houston during its final year at The Rig in 2009.  It was actually my first year driving my own car so I was still pretty terrible.  Drove back from Pearland through downtown at 1am in the POURING rain...and it was Saturday night so there was still some decent traffic.  It's extremely scary being in your first year driving, your first time driving in downtown city traffic and not being able to see the lines on the road and there's tons of cars all around you.

Yes I can see how my daughter messed up, but I don’t get how it took so long for her to figure that out. :D I remember her calling and saying, “mom, I see a sign that says Shreveport LA is 20 miles away (or however far it was), did I make a wrong turn somewhere?” Ha, I was like, “well considering the fact you should have been in Austin 2 hours ago, and we don’t live anywhere near Shreveport, I’d say you definitely missed a turn!” Poor baby. That was before GPS and Google Maps guided us everywhere on our cells, but still!

And on your scary, rainy drive that night in downtown Houston? I still get super stressed in those situations even at my age. I bet your mother was a nervous wreck until you got home!

Heh, I don't think I've ever told my mom that story.  Probably for the better. I was definitely happy to make it back to my apartment though.

Yeah sometimes it’s best if moms don’t know! :)

will there be a "geek in" for both McAllen and Midland next week?

There will be a Nerd-In for every Texas Regional! I may combine McAllen and Midland in to one program. If I do that, I'll make sure to put bookmarks in the video so you can listen to a specific part if needed.
