sax5warrior Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 Do you guys have any suggestions as in wut brand of Alto Saxes should i take a look at? Quote
TRtrumpet Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 I have a Yamaha and it works pretty well for me... exept the high A sounds pretty bad for some reason. I tried it on all the schools alto's and the high A sounds fuzzy on all of them. What kind do you have right now? Quote
itsstephenyo Posted December 15, 2005 Posted December 15, 2005 it all depends. the best thing to do is to sit down with 5 different saxes and play all of them using the same mouthpiece and reed and stuff. that way you'll really get the best instrument outta the lot. sometimes a selmer series II doesnt play as well as a yamaha custom. it all depends on the instrument itself. now if you dont wanna try 5 different ones, you can usually ask to try out three of the same instrument and then u can pick the best out of, let's say, three Selmer series II's. sax5warrior Posted December 15, 2005 Author Posted December 15, 2005 i heard Cannonballs have rave reviews by some "experts" , do you really think Cannonballs are really the real deal as some people say? Quote
itsstephenyo Posted December 17, 2005 Posted December 17, 2005 can't really say. i've never tried one but i've heard that cannonballs are really just for looks because u can get them engraved and colored to the max or something like that... Quote
maverick Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 Look at the Selmer Super Action 80 series and Serie III, The LA Sax 7500 series and Chicago Jazz series, the Cannonball Raven series, and Keilworth Shadow series. Those are all professional quality horns. I've tried them all and I must say the Serie III and 7500 were less expensive and played just as good as a Super Action 80 and Chicago Jazz Series. The 7500 and the Chicago Jazz series also features a high G key that is actually not too bad. I figured it might screw up some of the bottom register but it played fine. The Raven series incredible and it is definitely worth the money. It comes with two different plated necks that can be switched depending on what you are playing for. I find the Shadow to be a little too bright on the higher register but has an extremely rich tone in the lower register. I hope this helps you in your decision. Quote
Brian Ngo Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 try the Yamaha Custom series EX....I tried one at Midwest and I think I like it better then my Super Action 80 Quote
SaxoAK Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 OMG!! YAMAHA CUSTOM Z!!!! they rock my freaking socks off! (b/c i have one hehe)...but if not, Mark VI's are godly! and same goes for keilwerth shadows Quote
LvKyo Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 I'd definitely have to agree with itsstephenyo on this. It really does depend on what saxophone you've tried that you play well on. Those I must say, if you buy from the internet, be careful what you're looking at. I wouldn't suggest something called a "Sky USA." I had one, and it's not the best quality you can go for. Tuning was terrible. Quote
sax5warrior Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 wooooooow... what a difference 10 months make im very happy with my Yamaha Allegro given with a Selmer C* Mouthpiece and 4 sized V16 Vandoren Reeds as the Baylor Professor suggested it makes a powerful combo Quote

Mr.Jacobson, Professor of Saxophone @ Baylor told me that a Regular Vandoren 3 1/2 or a Vandoren V16 size 4 are right for classical setting V16 arent manly for jazz its the Vandoren ZZ reeds Quote
itsstephenyo Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 it's still a bit of an odd set up. the C* mouthpiece works really well with plain old Vandoren 3's or 3 1/2. i just find it odd that a professor would recommend V16's to a student. but, hey, if it works, use it. it's good that you found a setup that works for you. barisaxy08 Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 u have to be really tone deaf not to know that Selmer's are way better than any saxophone out there (sorry Yahamamamamama) what's so good about Selmer's is that even when they get all old and rusty...they will sound brand new still...which is beautiful to have when u spend almost 2,000 something dollars or more on a horn. Again, saying that ALL Selmers are better than any other saxophone is... well, pretty stupid. Some Yamahas, Keilwerths, Yanagisawas, etc... will play better than a given Selmer. Heck, a kid at my school got a Yamaha Custom that played MUCH better than my Selmer Super Action 80. Tone, response, everything was better. Selmer Saxophone A could be better than Yamaha Saxophone A, but not always. It depends on the instrument itself and likes of the player. Quote

If you want a good marching sax: Yahama If you want a good concert sax: Selmer If you want a good jazz sax: That depends on the player...very iffy topic. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 And again, I STILL don't agree with that. You can't just say X brand is the best brand of saxophone because it's NOT like that. You can't generalize brands like that. It's best to test a whole slew of instruments to test which one is best for you. Quote
barisaxy08 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 well im jus stating my experience from what saxophones I've come in contact wit. It's jus MY opinion and that's what I believe. I'm not telling u u have to agree wit my choice or anything, that's jus how i do my thing. So calm down young one...it's jus an opinion...u don't have to be so **** about it. Quote

And next time, you should say that "It's my opinion that X brand is the best for me," instead of calling people tone-deaf if they don't agree with you. Quote
blusax Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 Well obviously this is a personal preference issue. At the moment I play alto and tenor in various ensembles. Im really all about the sound I produce on different horns rather than how technically sound it is (although thats important too) My unit just got a horn I requested about a year ago a Yanagisawa 992 (bronze) alto. Love the horn to death. Very dark sound (darker than selmers) and the altissimo is just a little easier than my selmer series 2 alto. For Dixie Band and the occasional big band stuff I play on a selmer reference 36. Love that horn too. Been dying to try a yamaha custom z tenor but there wernt any I could find and test at TBA this year. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 You know, I've always wanted to try a Yanagisawa alto. My brother purchased a baby alto a few years back and man, that thing is amazing. The tone on that little soprano is excellent. Also, it's pretty cool playing an 18 inch saxophone. Quote
