In reality it doesn't seem that way, it seems the standard really involves some concrete level of performance that all bands must meet rather than a relative one. Solid research dude. Props. I'd say there is somewhat a lower standard held to the smaller classifications, but it's more of a judges impression thing than what UIL wants. They'll just tend to be a little more lenient, but also in larger classifications, 2 worthy groups will stick out MUCH more due to the higher standard of performance. Being a 2 worthy band in a same block as, lets say LISD schools, would make you by comparison stick out a lot. It doesn't always happen but it can for that reason. Quote

Area D has FIVE currently ranked bands (in the top 30) with THREE in the top 10!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me tell you about the year 2014 when a great high school that won't be named made first in prelims and then 8th in finals, getting knocked out of state. Area D has so many great bands that could make finals at state, CTJ, Ronald Reagan, Churchill, Hendrickson, Round Rock, Bowie, Cedar Ridge, Stony Point. It is a blood bath in Area D, state is a blood bath, UIL is a Blood Bath. Synth_God 1 Quote

I think atleast 12 or 13 bands in area b have the ability to advance to state . And yes they may be ranked . Difference is 1-10 in area b could go in any order when in area d . Has a certain amount of bands that we know will most likely made it. Area b is stacked from 1-13 while area d is stacked 1- like 7. Not saying area d isn’t harder . It’s just area b has way more groups that are uil based and have consistently made uil State finals for years . Aka duncanville , coppell, LD Bell, etc. really area b and d are very similar in competitiveness . I just like area b is more competitive due to nobody knows what will happen Quote

LostChoirGuy Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 Both area B and D are crazy hard and difficult to predict. B goes a bit deeper with bubble groups that could qualify for state only because the bands that are on top in D are more dominant. Both areas will have bands that deserve to make state not advancing. Mash Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 Area H is a cake walk(battling for three spots will be tight)......LOL. Seriously, there are many great areas no reason to get into area feuds on the forum. Quote

I'm hoping for an LISD sweep on Saturday, but I am sad that only 3 bands are moving on. Quote

Their argument is quite valid as there are some really competitive areas only taking 4 or 5 bands to state because the apportionment of areas only has 25-30 bands total including bands that struggle to get a one Quote

You're not comparing apples to apples. All we're saying is that Area B has more depth as far as bands who could/should qualify for State...not nationally ranked/state ranked bands . There are bands that should qualify for State who won't even advance to finals at Area B's competition. I don't know if that can be said for other areas. The band that has the best chance of winning state of our Area B is Keller, IMO....Area K definitely has more that could win. ***Edit*** "Area D definitely has more that could win." Even when your school beats mine, the judge was blind/deaf maybe both! Go Team! I mean go BAND! As EVERY band director tells people at the beginning of every season, we don't do this for the medals or trophies. That stuff doesn't really matter. Just try your hardest and enjoy the experience. Popular Post DeaRoFlo Posted October 24, 2018 Popular Post Posted October 24, 2018 As a former band member myself, and watching marching competitions as a kid, its fascinating to see the changes you have gotten over the years. I miss traditional marching where it was marching and not a show, per se. Heck, my high school didn't get a color guard until the mid 90's. However, I think I like the UIL format better than BOA. BOA seems to aware the more elaborate BIG shows where UIL is judged against a standard, giving the poor little guy a chance. I have to think that guys that do traditional marching shows like some of the schools in East Texas feel that UIL is their big show to achieve excellence. At any rate, as a spectator and a mom of a band kid, this is such a wild ride! bandmom1823, LeanderMomma and KickemColts75 3 Quote
