bingogooberman Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Nice to see San Antonio becoming more a destination contest, with more out of state programs making the trip. So far for 2019 we’ve got three out of state bands, already above the average, and all three are significant programs (Archbishop Alter, OH, Westlake, UT and dark horse for finals Vista Murrieta, CA) Anyone know of any others rumored to be making the trip? DrumCorpsGeek Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I've seen Blue Springs being rumored, which would be huge. Quote
Samuel Culper Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I've seen Blue Springs being rumored, which would be huge. They are in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Seems like a bit of a stretch to do both, doesn't it? Quote

Samuel Culper Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 I think San Antonio needs a separate regional contest in addition to the Super Regional We already have six Regionals in Texas. That feels like enough. LeanderMomma 1 Quote

sop153063 Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 That's something to consider for BOA, how saturated can Texas become with regionals. I feel like there isn't many weekends or locations left for added contests (just off the top of my head). Maybe an earlier season San Antonio Regional? Quote

Possibly put it on the same weekend as Austin. Currently the DFW and Houston are the same weekend and they are full. tobee 1 Quote

I feel like there isn't many weekends or locations left for added contests (just off the top of my head). Maybe an earlier season San Antonio Regional? during a non-state year, most programs many do 1 or 2 regional events and then the SR in SA. that is mostly due to travel costs. if an earlier season regional was added in SA it would allow many of the SA and even Austin schools to do 2 regional events close to home - no overnight or charter bus costs. for the NEISD Schools here in SA, Austin is the only regional that can be done in school buses and not charters. Dallas, Midland, McAllen and sometimes Houston are overnight events with charter buses - and a $10K hotel cost. I would imagine a regional in SA would not draw from the entire state like the SR does. the dome would ensure a regional with no rain outs (as we saw last year) and many of those outside the area that spend a great deal to come to SA would not want to pay that twice. the question would be if it would be a big enough draw to make it worthwhile for the cost of the dome, so it may have to be in a location other than the dome. I think it would be easy to get 30 bands from SA and Austin to come to SA for a October regional just my thoughts Quote

BlackJesus Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Adding an extra regional would likely end most local marching competitions Quote
Samuel Culper Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Adding an extra regional would likely end most local marching competitions This is another oft overlooked aspect. I feel like the state of Texas is already well-saturated (if not slightly oversaturated) with BoA contests. Certainly some local contests have suffered as a result, contests that are significant fundraisers for local bands. Quote
Tke123 Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Adding an extra regional would likely end most local marching competitions I am unfamiliar with non BOA San Antonio local competitions since our band doesn’t attend any. Are there many BOA bands that attend these? Quote

Are there many BOA bands that attend these? there are few that attend BOA SA - but only because it is local - they do not attend any of the others. I do not recall in the past 8 years ever seeing any SA bands in Dallas, Houston, or Austin other than CTJ, Reagan, and Churchill. It is also rare to see those 3 BOA programs at the local US Bands or Roughrider competition, etc... just what I have seen but there could be others that I am not aware of Quote
CTJBandPops Posted April 11, 2019 Author Posted April 11, 2019 Yeah a lot actually I know Texas Marching Classic and HEB Marching Contest have some great bands constantly attending. Texas Marching Classic is hit or miss on the attendees and how stiff that competition is - HEB has always been solid as the you have some BOA power bands in the area as well as some bands that could be BOA powers that choose not to do BOA - but again, these attendees are based on the fact that it is local and not a major cost for the program - it comes down to money for a road trip with 350+ kids and parents Quote
Tke123 Posted April 11, 2019 Posted April 11, 2019 Yeah a lot actually I know Texas Marching Classic and HEB Marching Contest have some great bands constantly attending. I know TMC is Austin. I Thought HEB was DFW. It would be nice to have a local SA contest that would support an area band. It would probably need to be an NEISD band to draw competition. It’s hard to say what the district would say since they already have the Fall Festival- but that’s free and on a week night. Quote

Roosevelt has the "Roughrider" competition - that is an NEISD school - it is done at Heroes or Blossom - they have done it for decades and it is a major financial support tool for that school. the challenge is getting a Saturday that does not interfere with football - there are 7 high schools using 2 stadiums - Saturdays are scarce - especially in a state year when UIL region and area is being done at Heroes Quote

I had heard of that contest but didn’t realize it was hosted by Roosevelt. Do you know if CTJ, Churchill, Reagan or Madison have ever attended? I know there are a lot of Saturday games this year for NEISD. I hope they find a weekend for their contest. Quote

Madison generally attends a few local contests each year, such as the rough rider competition or Judson rocket review and the Yamaha cup which is also held at Judson’s stadium. 2017 was the first time we went to a regional other than San Antonio, and that was McAllen. I hope we attend another regional again this year like Houston or something. A few years ago we went to Texas marching classic as well. Quote

Certainly some local contests have suffered as a result, contests that are significant fundraisers for local bands.2018 - 7 TX Competitions2017 - 6 TX Competitions 2016/15 - 5 TX Competitions 2014/13 - 4 TX Competitions 2012 - 3 TX Competitions Before then it jumped between 3 or 4 competitions depending on the year for at least a decade. Despite 7 of them this past season, it's not as oversaturated as I originally thought, as 5 of them were all on or before the first weekend of October, opening up the next 4 weekends. McAllen and Midland also help those lesser known bands get better, and they along with Austin and early in the season. I feel like Waco is really the BOA contest that oversaturated Texas. Probably the best positioned and best one, but local contests could never compete with it's caliber. Quote
