2014 came very close to having both happen actually. VR made finals after an 11th place finish at Austin (The last band before RR to do so), and Hebron placed 6th after winning in Denton

Full results?  Those won't be posted until after finals.

Sometimes we get tidbits of prelims scores here and there before they’re officially released but that’s rare

Quick analysis, I don't know if any bands were changed to a different judging panel, this is what panel each of the finalist were judged by and Top 7/ Bottom 7 placement:

I feel like prelims scores and finals scores are gonna be an interesting comparison.. only saying that because of Flower Mound

Let's not forget that in a bubble with more then 15 bands (Cedar Ridge, Cedar Park, Coppell, Westlake, Westwood, Vista Murreta, Clear Brook, Lake Travis, John B. Alexander, Prosper, Keller Central, Oak Ridge, Timber Creek just to name a few) there is a lot of uncertainty with how bands are chosen. Ultimately when bands are so close to each other as they are here; it just comes down to what the judges see. Every one of the bands in the bubble are in the bubble because they have the ability to make finals. No one is doubting that. When all the dust settles though and bands are so close; it simply comes down to what the judges saw.  When you have 14 bands to take, and ~25 that can make that top 14, these things just happen.It's not about which bands are "deserving" or otherwise, it's about how deep this competition is.  If I'm being honest, if you score a ~90 at a regional there's absolutely no reason to say your band is "undeserving" of a finals slot. Unfortunately that's just not how this works. Many amazing bands can and did get left out. Not making finals isn't anything to be ashamed of. It can be really disappointing and pretty saddening, but its not a reflection of how good you are as a band. In some alternate reality, if the judges had just looked at different things this field could and probably would look different. I'm not saying that any of the bands that did make it in don't deserve to be in; quite the contrary. They are in because they are amazing; bar none. There are just far more amazing bands here then finals allows for, and that's why San Antonio is so infamous.

It is unfortunate that so many good bands only get to perform once at such a massive event. They should be able to perform again. I’m in the camp that this event should adopt a semis format.

What I love is that bands that didn't make finals will come back next year with killer shows and ready for a fight. It just makes it more exciting!

The only bands to ever make finals at SA after missing at a regional are RR (Austin 2019), VR (Austin 2014), Plano East (Denton 2012), Aledo (Arlington 2010), Ronald Reagan (Arlington 2009), Leander (Arlington 2008 & 2009), Hebron (Arlington 2005 & 2007), Brazoswood (Pearland 2007), Coppell (Arlington 2005), and Lake Highlands (Arlington 2004).

 

Of these, only Aledo (15th -> 14th) and Lake Highlands (17th -> 13th) improved on their placement from the regional to SA.

 

So basically, it used to be fairly common, but it’s become a lot more difficult in the past 5-10 years or so.

You were spot on with this. Keller gave the first “finalist” performance of the competition. Way too many deserving bands.

Preliminary Competition scores are disclosed once the event is complete, so expect them to be released early tomorrow morning (12AM-1AM Early)

I wish I could’ve seen that big bright pink bridge from Rouse at least once more! Heard Oak Ridges moving ballad again! Heard Lake Travis’ walk on those stairs just another time! Seen Vista Muriettas visual prowess again! Watched what Icarus would’ve done with a do-over with Cedar Park! Seen Westlake knock on opportunity’s door again! Got to see Cedar Ridge score another checkmate! Seen Timber Creeks homage to the newspaper again! Got to be moved with John B. Alexander at least once more! Fall in love all over again with James E.Taylor! Learn to understand New Realism with Coppell again! I want to see Westwood’s snowman again! I want to hear them being jolly to the Dome once more! I want semi-finals! I want to see these bands again! They deserve another performance!

Several reasons: missed out on finals in Austin regional (2019) and not making finals in San Antonio (2017 and 2018). They had been a perennial finalist in the past
