Possible, but I don't think making finals in 2019 will be easier than it has been the last 2 years. When was the last time Vista Murrieta cracked 90 at a BOA contest? Doesn't mean they can't in 2019, but they have not had that track record (at least in the last couple years). Quote
Guest Posted May 25, 2019 Posted May 25, 2019 If they have a season like 2016 again than I could see them cracking the top 17 and potentially finals. Quote
Popular Post abtwitch Posted May 26, 2019 Popular Post Posted May 26, 2019 I'm gonna do a quick rundown of bands to look out for at this competition. Aledo* (AAA) - A consistent 5A finalist looking to have a good run in the Alamodome before their state performance a few days later. Archbishop Alter, OH* (A) - First out of stater, potential Class A champion Burleson Centennial (AAA) - WGI percussion and winds powerhouse, first year competing in BOA and I am hopeful for good results at all 4 BOA competitions (Midland, Bedford, Waco, SA) they'll be attending on top of UIL Cedar Park* (AAA) - A bubble finalist after last season, but I think they can recover. Also a state year for them. Cedar Ridge* (AAAA) - A mostly consistent finalist coming off of a fantastic season last year with their first time ever making it to state finals. Claudia Taylor Johnson* (AAAA) - No explanation needed for this one. They'll be taking a trip up to Indy this fall and will hopefully be on top of their game. Clear Brook* (AAA) - A smaller 6A school, putting them in Class AAA, they will be looking to medal again with Vista Ridge (most likely) moving back up to AAAA. College Park* (AAAA) - A group that in recent years has been peaking late season, they will probably be in the top 30 again like recent years if not higher. Collinsville, OK* (A) - Another out of stater and potential Class A champion, won the title very decisively at BOA St. Louis in 2017. Coppell* (AAAA) - After last season's best BOA season in quite some time, it will be interesting to see how they change their design on a non-state year. Cy-Fair* (AAAA) - Houston area powerhouse, consistent state qualifier and BOA finalist. Has placed in the top 20 the last two times they went and there's no reason to think they'll stop. Cypress Falls* (AAAA) - BOA super regional finalists at Atlanta 2015 and San Antonio 2016, but missed St. Louis in 2017 due to staff changes and weather. Also was state alternates last season for Area I. Dawson (AAAA) - Making a return to BOA after quite some time, but were consistent finalists at BOA Houston and have remained in the the top 20 at UIL consistently since. Del Rio* (AAAA) - A valley band on the rise, first time attending BOA SA was last season and has 4 BOA events (McAllen, Austin, Midland, SA) on their schedule. East View (AA) - With the AA field cleared completely with Rouse and Weiss moving up to AAA and Camdenton not attending, this improving group could snag a class medal. Flower Mound* (AAAA) - Reigning BOA SA champion and has won 3 out of the past 4 years, more than likely will medal once again if not win it all. Forney* (AA) - The main Class AA champion contender in my opinion, a very consistent small 5A group that will also be looking to sneak into finals at state this year. Friendswood (AAA) - After dropping back down to 5A and some staff changes, Friendswood had a rough start to the 2018 season but had recovered by the end. Another contender for a AAA medal and will most likely march in state finals the following few days. Grulla* (AA) - This group is in a similar spot as East View, but is a large 4A that has history of making state finals or being close, a dark horse for a class medal. Hebron* (AAAA) - Not much to say other than they will most likely win the music caption and have a stronger visual design as is with trend and their grand nats trip. Hendrickson* (AAAA) - Still shuffling staff, but has shown that major staff changes won't take their powerhouse title. A good prediction for finals although not a lock. Hidalgo* (AA) - A consistent BOA McAllen and 4A state finalist who will be fighting for a class medal. Hollister, MO (A) - Yet another out of state group, they were just a few points from taking 3rd in Class A at St. Louis this past year and will be looking to do better here, but the Class A is more competitive than it ever has been at SA so it will be tough. Hutto (AAA) - A group that has been on the rise the past few years and placed impressively in the top 50 at their first BOA competition ever ahead of fantastic groups like Aledo and Plano East. Could potentially qualify for state and be marching there a few days later. James Bowie* (AAAA) - After having a promising start to their 2018 season, they narrowly missed finals at SA to which some have attributed to unbalanced panel judging. They will be fighting to redeem themselves and reclaim their finals spot. James E. Taylor* (AAAA) - An on and off BOA Houston finalist and consistent state qualifier, will definitely be making noise in the stadium. James Madison* (AAAA) - This group hasn't been the most consistent the past couple years, but when they do well they are a very solid program James Martin* (AAAA) - In 2016, this group placed a very impressive 19th at SA and could do it again with the right show. John B. Alexander* (AAAA) - This Laredo group had a fantastic season last year and only seems ready to improve more and more. John Horn (AAAA) - A surprise state qualifier, until you actually heard them. This group is known for their volume and could sneak into the top 30 with the right show and performance. Johnson (A) - The brand new Hays CISD school that could potentially be our next "Weiss". As we know next to nothing about this program, there is no telling if they will be competing for the class title or not even be close. Katy (AAAA) - After qualifying for state for the first time in school history, this group appears to be on the rise and could place higher than many expect. Keller* (AAAA) - A group that has been growing insane amounts the past few years, this season could cement their name as a powerhouse if you don't consider them one already. Keller Central* (AAAA) - A solid program all around that will score very comfortably in the top half, but probably won't make it to finals this year. Klein Oak (AAAA) - A growing Houston-area program with lots of potential and always performs better at BOA than UIL, it will be interesting to hear them again with a fully BOA-oriented show after a solid top 40 placement the past 2 seasons. L.D. Bell* (AAAA) - Made BOA SA finals despite not qualifying for state and will also be taking a trip to St. Louis, they will certainly be in the bubble for finals but not a lock. Lake Travis (AAAA) - After a fantastic performance at SA last season, LT looks to be focusing a lot more on BOA than before with 4 competitions (Austin, Katy, STL, SA) on their schedule. Leander* (AAA) - Looking to have a very strong show for their grand nationals year and my personal call for the Class AAA title. Marcus* (AAAA) - I still see them in finals and hopefully will be stronger than last year, but it is too early to tell considering their staff situation. New Braunfels (AAAA) - They placed in the top 50 last year and were one spot out of area finals, could improve or stay the same, but they certainly aren't going anywhere. North Shore* (AAAA) - Ensemble sound and that's about all I have to say... but seriously, they could be a dark horse for finals if they bring the right show. Oak Ridge* (AAAA) - Yet another Houston-area dark horse program that has been improving a lot as of recent. Obra D. Tompkins (AAAA) - Another Katy ISD school that could surprise some people, but there's no telling where they'll end up. Pearland* (AAAA) - This group has started a pattern of missing BOA Houston finals before performing and placing far better at SA, maybe they can start stronger and make finals? Pecos* (A) - This group has been the Class A champion at Midland the past 2 years and will be looking to claim a medal at SA this year. Pflugerville (AAA) - Another 5A drop who will be hoping to make state finals for the first time in school history and another group fighting for that last Class AAA medal. Pioneer* (AA) - This valley group has been consistent McAllen finalists since it opened up in 2015 and could potentially walk away with a class medal if they have the right season. Plano East (AAAA) - A very up and down program that is hard to place for sure, but will likely be in the top 50 once again. Prosper* (AAAA) - This group may start to drop off a little bit with the opening of the new PISD school, but they will more than likely be strong once again with the same staff. Robinson* (A) - The reigning Class A champion that may struggle to even medal this year because of all the new faces, but could take a medal with a strong performance. Roma* (AAA) - A very strong valley group who seemed to have a rough start to the season but fully recovered by SA. Ronald Reagan* (AAAA) - The group that many thought were going to take the BOA SA title for the first time in over a decade, but narrowly got beat out in finals. There's no reason not to expect yet another strong performance from this group. Round Rock* (AAAA) - A very interesting case as they've appeared to be on a decline the past few years, but there's no telling how they will change for their grand nationals year. Rouse* (AAA) - After a VERY strong season winning 2 Class AA titles, this group will be fighting to medal in Class AAA with a growing group of kids. San Benito* (AAAA) - This group really surprised everyone by placing 4th at BOA McAllen then missing area finals by a longshot later in the season, there's no telling how they will do here but they certainly have potential. Shadow Creek (AAA) - A complete shot in the dark, but could potentially qualify for state. The Woodlands* (AAAA) - With what seems like a rough design the past few years, hopefully they'll be back on board with the rest of the powerhouses this season in preparation for grand nationals. Timber Creek* (AAAA) - THE state alternate of Texas, but also a very strong BOA group who only appears to be getting stronger. A dark horse for finals but for sure will put on a fantastic performance. Tom Glenn (AAA) - As the school prepares to reach capacity, they could really make a jump this year to start catching up with the rest of LISD South. United* (AAAA) - After placing 6th at BOA McAllen last year and being the highest placing Area G band at state, this group seems to be on the rise. Vandegrift* (AAAA) - Have you heard their preview performance yet? Definitely the same Vandy, but playing to a slightly more BOA tune, definitely potential champions with the right execution. Vista Murrieta* (AAAA) - The out of stater that really has everyone talking with a good chance at performing twice if they have a season similar to 2016, but it will not be an easy fight for them even so. Vista Ridge* (AAAA) - Reigning state champions and a quickly improving program, could potentially take the BOA SA title with the right show. Wakeland* (AAA) - Yet another Class AAA medal contender who is a very consistent 5A program and even made SA finals in 2015. Weiss* (AAA) - I think you get the idea. Another Class AAA medal contender and strong 5A program that has made super regional finals in recent history. Westlake, TX* (AAAA) - After what appeared to be a few years of decline, Westlake made the jump back into finals despite them not being able to attend a BOA event earlier in the season (whoosh). Westlake, UT* (AAAA) - The fifth and final out of stater really just coming for the kids to see some of the top performing programs in the nation, but also a Utah powerhouse who will be looking to place fairly high in prelims. Westwood* (AAAA) - They've had their ups and downs, but have the show and the setup to go a lot of places this season. Potential dark horse for finals. Winston Churchill* (AAAA) - With a major staff change about to happen, there's no telling if this group will stay a strong top 25er or drop slightly, but will still be strong group for sure. Wylie (AAAA) - After a disappointing drop in placement from 22nd in 2017 to 44th in 2018, Wylie could potentially do very well once again at this competition. Wylie East* (AAA) - After scoring a medal at BOA Midland in 2018 much to many peoples' surprise, this group definitely is on the rise and will be one to keep you eyes on. Wow, this competition is intense. If the band has an asterisk next to it, then they have made BOA or UIL State finals or were class champions at in the past 5 years. It's a good reference to see exactly how thick the competition is in Texas. I'll be hoping to do something like this again closer to the competition to see how the field has changed.
