Percmom21 Posted November 4, 2018 Posted November 4, 2018 Was just wondering if anyone covers/talks about/attends the Drumline contests like this one? It's this Saturday at Marcus and runs all day. Quote

FloMoParent Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 This used to be the premier drumline contest. Sad to see only two marching lines, and both of them are just exhibition. northtexasbandfan 1 Quote
bingogooberman Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 i think it still is the premier drumline contest. it's definitely fallen off a bit in attendance, some of which may have to do with the Lewisville drumline contest now being the same weekend and it is interesting to see groups abandon marching (most notably Hebron) but I still think this is probably the most prestigious contest in the state FloMoParent 1 Quote
principalagent Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 I just don’t think bands do marching drumline anymore because it’s a cost and time suck - especially if the marching show is different than the band show. Quote
ranian04 Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 I know Coppell has a very good drumline. Quote

Go basses! Their new percussion director is actually a friend of mine who lived across the hall from me in college, and I believe we were in a steel pan ensemble together as well. Obviously they're in great hands. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 Wow....go Vandy and Cedar Park! I don’t really understand the different classifications but great job Newman Smith as well! Is that a DFW school? Oh, and Highland Park too...that’s fantastic! principalagent 1 Quote

Off topic I know, but does anyone by chance know anything about Western Hills? I have a college friend whose son will be in that band next year, but I am not familiar with them. Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 I'm not familiar with the band but I know the school. It is in Fort Worth. Back in the old classifications it was a 4A school, and there is a chance that it might have remained 4A when the classifications moved up. That or it is now a 5A school. Unfortunately the fort worth schools don't have great funding for their arts programs (they use magnet schools like Dallas if I'm not mistaken) so there isn't a huge history of marching success from them. Yes I was just watching a news story on them from like 2013. Seems like they just recently started having a marching band again. Hopefully they will continue to grow. My friend’s son is currently in 8th grade and just made All Region on the trombone. Here’s to a brighter future for lesser known and funded bands! Quote
bingogooberman Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 With regard to classification, I believe silver denotes larger drum lines, red is smaller groups. Division 1 is more advanced groups and Division 2 is intermediate- at least that’s the idea, I’m pretty sure schools get to pick between d1 and d2, which is why you see some groups in the lower class out scoring groups in the advanced class LeanderMomma 1 Quote
