artishard Posted February 8, 2006 Posted February 8, 2006 well...there's a few that i like a lot. 1. Zion by Dan Welcher....it's just crazy. 2. Medea-Samuel Barber 3. Chorale and Alleluia-Howard Hanson...once again, crazy horn parts..but once you learn them, a LOT of fun. 4.Symphony No. 9(New World Symphony) Movement 4, Allegro Con Fuoco-Antonin Dvorak...once again, a fun horn part. 5. Commando March-Samuel Barber...the end is fun. this list would be longer if i didn't go to school soon Quote
TRtrumpet Posted February 9, 2006 Author Posted February 9, 2006 1812 Overture is also awesome. We did it at honor band. AWESOME low brass part. Quote
artishard Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 yeah, i played it at band camp. the horn part is okay, when it isn't 4th horn...i looked at their part and it was all boring low notes. because low notes on french horn just aren't fun, in my opinion. it's either gotta be high or just middle register.. Quote
Aegis Fang Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Medea's Dance of Vengeance- played it my freshmen year for our show, pretty much one of the coolest pieces i've ever played. Tommy and Pinball Wizard- just good old 70's fun, kickasstic music =) Vesuvius (Frank Ticheli)- sounds awesome, lots of fun playing in 9/8, tough parts, did I mention it sounds awesome? Shostakovich's Symphony 5- especially the finale, awesome music Russian Christmas Music- I hated christmas music before I heard this song, because we always played the same stuff OVER and OVER again. I still hate christmas music, but this song rocks =p Quote

Whatchu' talkin' about? I heart my low range. Playing a double low Eb rocks. Sometimes I'll double the tuba parts in warm up chorales and stuff. Hehe. Quote
artishard Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 playing rediculously low is fun, however playing anything below the staff but isn't on bass clef is BOOORRRING. concertino by weber=low pedal c. WOOOOO Quote
thesnareguy Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 i heard symphonic metamorphisis is gud. recording ne1??? Quote
springbassliner26 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 I haven't been exposed to too much, but my top three peices that I've ever heard are: Lux Aurumque-Whitacre Morning Star-Maslanka Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity-Holst If anybody has some recordings of songs that I should hear, I would be glad to listen. Quote
whitewing09 Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Knights of Dunveagan by Richard Meyer i think. really good peice of music wasnt hard grade 2 i think. i playd it in the 7th grade but its really catchy. Quote
TRtrumpet Posted June 19, 2006 Author Posted June 19, 2006 We played one at HPU called "Salvation Is Created"... it was really beautifull. Also a awesome jazzy one called "At A Dixieland Jazz Funeral". If you have an amazing trumpet, clarinet, trombone, and tuba play this one! Theres a little dixie land jazz quartet thing in there for them... its hard to explain but I really wish I had a recording! Quote
bluebellbrass07 Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 QUOTE (TRtrumpet @ Jun 19 2006, 01:39 PM) We played one at HPU called "Salvation Is Created"... it was really beautifull. Bells been playing that for a marching warmup since way back when. I Quote
Trumpet Master Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei is just one of my all time favorites. Try listening to that song on the way back from a competition when the lights are all out in and outside the bus. Really Creepy! Shostakovich's Finale from Symphony No. 5. This piece was the highlight of my 05' marching season. We played all of Phantom Regiment's Defiant Heart. It was like a dream come true. Fire of Eternal Glory is another piece I highly recommend. Cappricio Espagnol is really fun to play. Ostinato from Mikroskosmos is still amazing as always. Firebird Suite is really long, but worth all the time. The list goes on and on! Quote
mnkyman Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 october and magnum mystryum <<<but i hate that piece so freakin boring to play Quote
FunkyFlute07 Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 An American Elegy. Jericho Rhapsody. Hymn for the Lost and the Living. Scootin' On Hardrock. Salvation is Created. Balkanya. ahh. muchos muchos more. Quote
Claritone Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 Just a few of my faves... Festival Variations - Claude T. Smith Festive Overture - Dimitri Shostakovitch Firebird Suite - Igor Stravinsky The Planets Suite - Gustav Holst Niagra Falls - Michael Daugherty Yosemite Autumn - Mark Camphouse A Movement for Rosa - Mark Camphouse Overture To Colas Breugnon - Dimitri Kabalevsky Armenian Dances - Alfred Reed ... and probably alot more if I have more time to think... I'm at summer school right now Quote
TX Suh-nare Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 "Jupiter". Gustav Holtz. Enough said. Got the privalege to play it for UIL Full Orchestra. Man it's beautiful. "Havendance" by David Holsinger. This music is awe-inspiring. When I watched my brother play it in his eighth grade cocert, I was forever a concert season fan. "Nimrod" from "Enigma Variations", I forget the composer. If you ever get a chance to play it, count your blessings. This is the most beautiful ballad I have ever heard. Period. Almost anything from Eric Whitacre. That man must be crazy because all great music like this cme from lunatics. There u go. Quote
pianomusicman89 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 here are some of my favorites: j'ai ete au bal molly on the shore march from symphonic metamophasis this really really cool Japanese song *that has a french title*... TRtrumpet Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 I got to play "El Camino Real" by Alfred Reed in the wind ensemble at band camp, and it was amazing. That's deffinetly my new favorite piece. Quote
takigan Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Hmm.....I thought I posted in this topic a long time ago. Ah well.....my all-time favorite piece is Tempered Steel....first heard it nearly 10 years ago and still like it to this day.....shame you hardly ever hear it anymore. Other favorites: Lux Aurumque - Eric Whitacre - Just GOD! If you have never heard this piece you fail at life . A Movement for Rosa - Mark Camphouse - The story of the piece doesn't mean much to me but I played it once in HS and thought it was ok, but after playing the piece with the Houston Symphonic Band when Rosa Parks died I gained a newfound appreciation for it (not because of her....I just started to like the piece more after performing it more). Equus - Eric Whitacre - Another Whitacre favorite Lincolnshire Posy (last movement) - Grainger Galactic Empires - David Gillingham - This piece was a blast to play O Magnum Mysterium - One of the most AWESOME pieces to listen to, but also one of the most BORING to play >_> Sol y Sombra - ?composer? - WOO! In your face Spanish goodness....I played this piece my sophomore year at Region, and for a long time it was my favorite text to Tempered Steel. There also were a couple pieces I heard at TMEA this year by the various All-State groups that I enjoyed greatly but have completely forgotten what they were called. Quote
Nancy08 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 There are so many good ones, but a few that stand out are: Aegean Festival Overture- So much fun to play, with an awesome slow section. Roman Carnival- Again so much fun to play. Probably my favorite actually. Feels very orchestra-y. Tempered Steel- Ive never played this one but I love to listen to it. October- Most beautiful song Ive had the pleasure to play. All Whitacre's music is great though. Festive Overture- Played it my freshman year. Don't remember too much about it except that I liked it. To Tame the Perilous Skies- We did this for our show last season, but the year before we played it for our Spring Concert. It's freakishly hard but I love it anyway. Quote
