shmily1130 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Okay, so that I've played: O Magnum Mysterium - But, as was mentioned, it is INCREDIBLY boring to play. But it's so beautiful! An American Elegy - Again, beautiful. Quite powerful... Festive Overture - Fun to play. And listen to. Engima Variations - Wow. It was amazing to play... Irish Tunes from County Derry - It's a powerful thing to play when you're in 7th grade... Third Suite - Okay, so most people end up strongly disliking it. But it was fun to play. Polovestian Dances - I LOVED it. 1812 Overture - Too bad we didn't use a cannon... I can't think of any more that I've played that I really liked. Maybe later. Okay, that I like to listen to: The Planets - How can you not like it? (Except for Jupiter. I'm kind of sick of it. [i auditioned for drum major with it]) Rite of Spring - I play bassoon. Their Blossoms Down - Again, bassoon. Adagio for Strings - And, part of our show music came from it... I can't think of others. Again, maybe later. Oh, and no offense to anyone, but I strongly disliked Easter Monday on the White House Lawn... Quote

Oh, and no offense to anyone, but I strongly disliked Easter Monday on the White House Lawn... You forgot Firebird . An easy but still amazing bassoon solo. Oh and Trittico Boteceliano (sp?). Basically "O Come, O Come" from Christmas. I agree about Easter Monday...I didn't like it that much, but my sister loves it. Quote
whitewing09 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 my favorite peices hmmmmm idk lol I like 5 Feste Romane by:Respighi idk i just like it 4 Summer Dances by:Balmages i love all the woodwind crap in it 3 American Riversongs by: LaPlante umm has a catchy 3 movement 2 Knights of Duveagan by:Meyers idk i loved it whenever i was in 7th Quote

Hmm, for some reason, I never really liked Armenian Dances... IDk, it just didn't measure up to the level I hold Reed to... here's what I've learned to love: Ra! - Amazingly fun to play. It's a 4 minute whirlwind of... well i don't really know... Niagara Falls - Probably my favorite. A little jazz, and a lot of marching band feeling... Tempered Steel- Very Sound effect oriented, but melodically, rather dull. Summer Dances - I love the melody's and the emotion in the slow section. Russian Christmas Music- Of course, can't forget this one... First Suite in Eb - I can't really place why I like this one, it's just a classic in my eyes. Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo - The rondo is SO much fun to play. Motown Metal - This song made me wish I played brass or percussion. It's so much like Michael Daugherty, and it really makes you feel like you're in Detroit. Postcard - Fun in general. I loved all the mix meter and time sig. changes. Variations on a Korean Folk Song - Love this piece. Not really hard, but it's just so amazing to listen to. October - U.F.O. - Solo percussionist w/ band. One of my favorite Daugherty Pieces. Red-Cape Tango - Interesting. Very Carmen esque, but very contemporary. Redline Symphony - Of course, Mackey had to be included. I love this song! Turning - Actually rather Creepy, but that's why I love it. Turbine - Another Mackey. So much fun to play! Hemispheres - I love the concept behind this piece. the 1st mvmt. is really awesome. Spin Cycle - This can get kinda dull while listening, but it provides enough entertainment overall... An American Elegy - I have yet to hear a recording/performance I like of this piece, but I think the reason behind it is wonderful. Bach's Fugue in G Minor - I love the band arrangement of this piece. It was taken from an organ fugue, and it fits really well w/ band. Gillingham's Concerto for Four Percussion - This is so dark and twisted, but also insanely hard. Quote

"Havendance" by David Holsinger. This music is awe-inspiring. When I watched my brother play it in his eighth grade cocert, I was forever a concert season fan. "Nimrod" from "Enigma Variations", I forget the composer. If you ever get a chance to play it, count your blessings. This is the most beautiful ballad I have ever heard. Period. Almost anything from Eric Whitacre. That man must be crazy because all great music like this cme from lunatics. There u go. Sir Edward Elgar wrote that piece. It really is a beautiful one to play. Higgins Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 bumbythebeach said: Watchman, Tell Us of The Night - Mark Camphouse -this one is realllllll emotional and it gives you chills at times..he wrote it as a tribute to the survivors of child abuse and neglect Oh my goodness, I absolutely LOVE this piece. I had the privelege of playing it this past year, which also happened to be my last year in high school, and, along with having a phenomenal euphonium part, it is truly an amazing piece of music. Kudos to Camphouse on that one. Others that I like listening to.. lemme think: Godzilla Eats Las Vegas -- Whitacre I love this one, humorous, awesome, and unique. Ticheli's 2nd Symphony Namely the 3rd movement, but the other 2 movements are good, too. French horn rip at the end of the 3rd movement is the coolest thing ever. 1812 Overture -- Tchaikovsky Can't go wrong with Tchaikovsky, and the fact that it was used in V for Vendetta really made me happy. Night on Bald Mountain -- Mussorgsky One of my favorite pieces, it's a classic piece to be used in scary parts of films. I, along with many of you, I'm sure, was first introduced to it with Fantasia, and unfortunately, the scene it was incorporated with gave me nightmares at the time, but I've since gotten past that, and now I appreciate the piece for what it is: Brilliant! The Sorcerer's Apprentice -- Dukas Again, another one from Fantasia, probably more well known than Bald Mountain because the scene involved Mickey Mouse. That's all I can think of at the moment. Fata1 Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 My favorite two pieces that I've played are Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar and Symphonic Movement by Vaclav Nelhybel. Enigma was just amazing and Symphonic Movement was a lot of fun to play. I only just finished my freshman year so both of those pieces were what we played last year in Wind Ensemble. I still have 3 years of high school left so I'm sure my list will grow. Quote
chickora Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Blue Shades and Profanation. Hands Down. Canarios Fantasia is pretty fun to play too. Quote
borchnork Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 This isn't a band piece, but We're playing it in my String Quartet... if you can find an arrangement of it for band, You'll love it! but anyways, Shostakovich's String Quartet #8 Is the BEST piece of music I've EVER heard. Quote
thesnareguy Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 Shostakovitch - Festive Overture The band arrangement isn't nearly as great as the orchestra one. Quote

borchnork Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 I KNOW! Awesome symphony... tchai 4. It's the only piece of music from him that I really like. We saw a band (won't mention names) perform the arrangement, and the arrangement was horrible, and they didn't play it well at alll. It made me want to cry. Quote

That piece IS amazing. I've heard both the demo recording on MBM and the UH Wind Ensemble version. The MBM version (I think it's some uni band in Wisconsin) in some ways I enjoyed more musically, though UH's was definitely much cleaner. The composer must love Tubas and Euphoniums.....solos galor! Not to mention the 5 part split between the Tubas and Euphoniums towards the end of the piece. Quote

Mark Custom Music (markcustom.com) has the CD for $15 though if you ever make it out to one of the Texas Music Conventions in San Antonio (TMEA, TBA, TCDA etc.) sometime during your life you can typically pick it up at the Mark Custom booth for 10 bucks using a student discount. Or you can hear bits and pieces of it for free at the UH website: http://www.music.uh.edu/bands/windensemble.html Quote
TRtrumpet Posted August 23, 2007 Author Posted August 23, 2007 I like "Nimrod" from "Enigma Variations". Got to play it at WTAMU band camp. Amazing. Also "El Camino Real" by Alfred Reed. Sweet sax parts (gotta love runs). Oh and Apollo Unleashed by ... um... forgot the name. But it's really cool. Quote

Really beautiful music. but other pieces i like - Don Juan. Alot of people think its "boring", but theres so much depth to it. Its one of the hardest peices I've ever played in my life, along with Eric Whitacre's Equus, which is also equally amazing. Arrival Platform Humlet is a really fun song, too. Quote
