TWHSPercDad Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 The only band I got to see today was Keller but I did see some odd judge activity. One judge was walking on the side of the field behind the prop for a good portion of the beginning/middle of the show. There is no way to properly judge individual performance like that??? It really caught me off guard while watching. I don’t want to undermine Bowie, I didn’t even see them so I bet it was fantastic. Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Amazing Grace/ Fix You is an interesting mash up of songs. I don't hate it but I don't love it either... Edit: to clarify this is in Burleson Centennial's show Quote
TWHSPercDad Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Well, just like DCI, the Music and Visual Individual judges on the field do not venture more than five yards from the sideline. I first noticed this two years ago at Grand Nats. And yes, it’s very difficult to acquire an adequate sample this way, IMO. Quote

Judges are always all over the field. Quote
BlueCircle Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Yeah, the judges definitely didn’t stay within 5 yards from the sideline. I just found it really weird that the judge decided to stay in the worst possible spot in the field. Was he going somewhere where it was quieter and could properly voice his opinion? I'm genuinely curious. Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Very impressive show, Aledo! I hadnt seen them yet this year. That will be really successful at UIL. I could see them slipping in top 5 at state. Quote
TWHSParent Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I’m not at all surprised Bowie swept captions today after I saw their massive improvement last Saturday at TMC. They’ll be in finals at San Antonio too I’m betting. I’m shocked Hendrickson is out. I was blown away by their show last Saturday. What am I missing? Or better yet, what are THEY missing?! Speaking as a semi-informed layperson, it is missing a "moment". It is well performed, but doesn't stand out. There are so many things they could do visually from the era they are pulling music from, and they don't really do much with it. I'm thinking selling the show like CTJ's Flashdance - go for the things that make people think :"1970's". Spelling out numbers that most people attending won't be able to see isn't enough. They need more visual cues, more disco moves, more brown and leisure suits. Bellbottoms are only a small part and not enough on their own. Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 As a math teacher, this Dripping Springs show is making me way too excited. They've got thr Fibonacci sequence, The Golden ratio, Infinity, e, and more in their show! Quote
BandDad4 Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 My only issue is the coronation some of these Texas bands seem to get before they even perform. Rudedog34 1 Quote
Nny14 Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 That was beautiful Dripping Springs. I loved every second. Wonderful job. Quote

Hachie2021 Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I love Aledo’s show. Richland was really good. Great French Horn solo Quote
bingogooberman Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Great show Richland! Has to be my favorite show of theirs in quite some time. Quote
vbassoon Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Seven Lakes was awesome!!! Though they’re going to have to clean up that Visual Ensemble score for SA, but it was such an enjoyable show. Quote
BlueCircle Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Jeez 7L, that flag work is crazy hard, probably too difficult and spread out to every be clean, I was just mesmerized by the visual design even if it wasn’t clean. Quote
jmj Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I adore that show from Seven Lakes! It’s so quirky and fun! The woodwinds have so many notes and are on fire! Quote
josephbandfan Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 The kids at James Bowie completely buy into their roles. Their show feels so realized and I could watch it all day Quote
LostChoirGuy Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I definitely get why Bowie did well. The kids do give it everything and they sound and look great. Watching them back to back, Keller's show is so much more exposed so it is really easy to see and hear all the flaws, but also easy to be blown away at the talent. Quote
Nny14 Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I'm not really seeing Bowie over Keller. I thought that was pretty impressive but with some room to grow. Quote
BlueCircle Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I can’t get over how much I absolutely ADORE Keller’s closer. Easily the hardest thing and coolest thing they’ve put on the field. However, it’s not clean. yet. Definitely the most demanding show of the night. Nny14 1 Quote
josephbandfan Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Keller’s final movement is so powerful, especially when the trombones come in. It just needs a lot of cleaning! BlueCircle 1 Quote
Rubisco Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Bowie is definitely trying something fresh this year, which I appreciate. After watching Bowie and Keller, I can see why Bowie would be ahead of Keller. First and foremost, I think Bowie's visual program is much more effective, and also cleaner. That said, I might give Keller the edge in music performance. Keller did have a lot of dirt in their closer, which might be hurting them, and hopefully they can clean up by San Antonio. Frankly, I think both groups are pretty close in quality. I'm wondering if, despite the Bowie caption sweep, the scores were close in prelims. Quote
TheHornplayer Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Hendrickson would probably be in finals but UIL region is also today and they were the second band to perform so it would make sense that they pulled from finals all together Quote
